Winners Tournament Narratives
1971 – The first Winners Tournament was held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on August 28th, 1971. Jim McDonald became the first Winners Tournament Champion. Second and third place finishers are unknown.
1972 – The second annual Winners Tournament was held at San Ramon National G.C. on October 28th. Dave Pearce won the tournament, the second and third place finishers are unknown.
1973 – The third annual Winners Tournament was held at Silverado C.C. – South on September 8th, 1973. Jerry Lindquist won the tournament with Mike Cook finishing second, the third place finisher is unknown.
1974 – The fourth annual Winners Tournament was played at Silverado C.C. – North on October 5th. Mike Cook won the tournament by one stroke after surviving a 10 on the par 5 sixteenth hole. Rollin Podwy finished in second place, the third place finisher is unknown. Mike also won the closest to the pin. ( this may have been the first closest to the pin )
1975 – Gary Beckman won the fifth annual Winners Tournament at Boundary Oak G.C. with Bob Simonson taking second, the third place finisher is unknown.
1976 – The sixth annual Winners Tournament was held at Franklin Canyon G.C. on October 24th. Harland Stuart won the tournament with Darwin Richey second and Denzil Storbeck third. Gary Beckman won the long drive, Bob Simonson took the closest to the pin.
1977 – The seventh annual Winners Tournament was held at Franklin Canyon G.C. on October 22nd. Bob Simonson won the tournament with Harland Stuart second and Mike Cook third. Joe Luna won the closest to the pin and John Ortiz the long drive.
1978 – Our 8th annual Winners Tournament was held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on split dates, one group playing during the week before and the second group playing September 2nd. Leading after the first group played was Don Scribner with a 65. Clar Reyes won the tournament with a 61, Dan Tiburcio second with a 64 and Don Scribner third with his 65. Gary Barrett shot a gross 3 over par 75. Dan Tiburcio won a closest to the pin and a long drive. Mike Cook won the other CP with John Ortiz winning the other LD. The split group idea for the Winners Tournament was dropped after this tournament, both groups playing under different conditions etc.
1979 – Blue Rock Springs G.C. was the site of the ninth annual Winners Tournament held on September 30th. Clar Reyes and Jim Spurgeon tied for first place. Scotty Coffin was second with Mike Cook and Dan Tiburcio third. Clar Reyes won the CP, Jim Spurgeon won the LD. Not eligible to win but taking second place points was Robert Weatherford, the same for Dave Pearce who took the third place points . The first Winners Tournament playoff was held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on October 6th, 1979. Clar Reyes won over Jim Spurgeon to take the title.
1980 – Our 10th annual Winners Tournament which was held at Kennedy G.C. on September 27th was won by Boyd Cook with a fine net 66. Scotty Coffin and Darwin Richey tied for second with net 71’s. Mike Cook and Denzil Storbeck tied for third with net 72’s. Mike Cook won the CP, Dave Pearce won both LD’s.
1981 – Saturday, October 3rd was the date for the eleventh annual Winners Tournament held at Kennedy G.C. Don Dean won the tournament with John Ortiz second and Denzil Storbeck and Clar Reyes tied for third place. Boyd Cook won the CP and in a bad year for par 3 iron play no one hit the CP par 3 sixteenth hole. Denzil Storbeck and Tom Stead won the LD’s. Don Dean won the Points Championship leap frogging Mike Cook who couldn’t play in the Winners Tournament. Tom Stead finished third in the points. Don also passed Mike Cook to win the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Howard Nitzkowski finished in third place.
1982 – Diablo Creek G.C. was the site for the twelfth annual Winners Tournament held on October 17th. Scotty Coffin won the tournament with Tom Stead finishing second. Tom Palilonis and Cullen Stephenson tied for third place. Tom Stead and Mike Cook won the CP’s with Tom Palilonis taking both LD’s. Cullen Stephenson had an eagle 3 on the par 5 twelfth hole. Mike Cook won the Points Championship with Denzil Storbeck second and Don Dean third. In the Scoring Championship for the year it was Denzil Storbeck first, Mike Cook second and Don Dean third.
1983 – The thirteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at Boundary Oak G.C. on October 8th. Clar Reyes won his third Winners Tournament by finishing first. Rollin Podwys was second with Mike Cook and Don Dean tying for third place. Don also won the CP, Rollin Podwys took both LD’s. Mike Cook won the Points Championship with Dave Pearce second and Don Dean third. Mike also won the Scoring Championship for the Year with Clar Reyes second and Dave Pearce third.
1984 – The fourteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at the “home of ties”, Franklin Canyon G.C. on October 6th. Scotty Coffin, Darwin Richey, Roger Staha and Denzil Storbeck tied for first place. One stroke back was Mike Cook, two back John Ortiz for second and third place. Bob Simonson and Rollin Podwys took the CP’s with Rollin also taking a LD along with John Ortiz. John Ortiz was the Points Champion followed by Cullen Stephenson and Boyd Cook in second and third. Cullen won the Scoring Average Championship with Scotty Coffin second and Denzil Storbeck third. The 18 hole playoff for the Winners Tournament came down to two players, Scotty Coffin and Denzil Storbeck. Darwin Richey and Roger Staha declined to play. Scotty won the playoff over Denzil by three strokes to win his second Winners Tournament in three years.
1985 – The fifteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at Chimney Rock G.C. on October 5th. Larry Campbell was the titleist with Bob Mathews and Cullen Stephenson tying for second and Ray Turner third. Stephenie Bellato, although not eligible to win the tournament won the first place points after shooting a net 62 with a 75% handicap. Bob Mathews and John Ortiz took the CP’s. Blayne Eversole won both LD’s. Cullen Stephenson won the Points Championship with Bob Mathews second and Mike Cook third. Cullen also won the Scoring Average Championship with Mike Cook second and Bob Mathews third.
1986 – The winner of the sixteenth annual Winners Tournament held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on October 4th was Boyd Cook. The trio of Larry Campbell, Sandie Cook and Denzil Storbeck finished one stroke back in second place. Howard Nitzkowski was alone in third. Don Scribner and Ray Turner won the CP’s. Mike Cook and Drew Paterson won the LD’s. Boyd Cook tied Cullen Stephenson for the points lead but Boyd won the Points Championship on a tie breaker. Ray Turner finished third. Denzil Storbeck moved past Cullen Stephenson to take the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Ray Turner finished third again.
1987 – The seventeenth annual Winners Tournament was held at Kennedy G.C. on August 29th. Drew Paterson topped off his year by winning it, Boyd Cook was second and Don Scribner third. Dave Pearce won both CP’s. Sandie Cook and Drew Paterson took the LD’s. Drew Paterson won both the Points and Scoring Average Championships for the year. Mike Cook and Boyd Cook finished second and third in the points. Mike Cook and Dave Pearce took second and third in the scoring average.
1988 – The eighteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at Diablo Creek G.C. on October 9th. Phil Eubanks and Don Scribner tied for first place. ( They also tied in the Pyramid Tournament finals ) Mike Cook and Denzil Storbeck tied for second with Dave Pearce and Ed Vegas tying for third. Don Scribner and Denzil Storbeck won the CP’s, Mike Cook and Mike Rosenberg took the LD’s. Don Scribner moved past Mike Cook to win the Points Championship for the year. Phil Eubanks finished third. Mike Cook won the Scoring Average Championship with Don Scribner second and Ed Vegas third. The Winners and Pyramid Tournaments playoff was held at Diablo Creek G.C. with Phil Eubanks the winner over Don Scribner by two strokes to take both titles.
1989 – The nineteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at Boundary Oak G.C. on September 16th. After playing nine holes, play was stopped due to lighting in the immediate area. After play was stopped it rained very hard for the rest of the day. John Ortiz won the tournament with Mike and Sandie Cook tied for second place. Press Bemis was alone in third place. Steve Blotzer won the CP, Boyd Cook and Bob Bohnet took the LD’s ( both on the same nine )
1990 – The twentieth annual Winners Tournament was played at Kennedy G.C. on September 1st. Mark Reinhart won the tournament by one stroke over John Ortiz in second and two strokes over Sandie Cook in third. No one won the CP’s, the LD’s were won by Sandie Cook and John Ortiz.
1991 – The 21st annual Winners Tournament took place at Kennedy G.G. on August 3rd. Sandie Cook won the tournament with Denzil Storbeck second and Mike Cook third. John Ortiz won a CP and a LD. Sandie Cook won the other CP, Bob Bohnet the other LD.
1992 – The 22nd annual Winners Tournament was held at Kennedy G.C. on August 29th. Ed Vegas took the title with Bob Bohnet one stroke back in second, third place went to Rollin Podwys. We finished just in time, it looked like hurricane Andrew was moving in on us. We raised $100.00 in memory of Tom Stead for the American Heart Association, total to date, $761.00.
1993 – The twenty third annual Winners Tournament scheduled for October 9th at Blue Rock Springs G.C. was cancelled and replaced by Franklin Canyon G.C. on Sunday, October 10th. Gary Beckman after shooting a gross 75 won the tournament with Rob Yarbrough close behind in second place. Denzil Storbeck took third. Although not eligible to win, Larry Odom took first place points with a net 63. Ed Vegas won a CP and a LD. Dave Pearce won the other CP and Gary Beckman the other LD. Gary also made an eagle 3 on the par 5 first hole. ( we played the back nine first ) Nemon Williamson went one better by making two eagle 3’s, one on the par 5 first hole and one on the par 5 ninth hole. Mike Cook won the Points Championship with Gary Beckman, Rollin Podwys and Dan Riley tied for second, Larry Campbell was third. Dan Tiburcio won the Scoring Average Championship for the year with Mike Cook second and Gary Beckman third.
1994 – The twenty fourth Winners Tournament was held at Paradise Valley G.C. on October 8th. Dan Tiburcio won first place with Mike Cook and Dave Pearce tied for second and Ed Vegas third. Although not eligible to win the tournament, Darwin Richey took the 8 first place points with a net 62. Dave Pearce and Darwin Richey won the CP’s, Bob Bohnet and Matt Hurst won the LD’s. Mike Cook won the Points Championship, Dan Tiburcio won the Scoring Average Championship.
1995 – The silver anniversary Winners Tournament was played on a sunny and calm day at Paradise Valley G.C. on October 7th. Floyd Duggins shooting a near record net 56 won the tournament. Finishing a strong second was Jim Grant with a net 62. Nemon Williamson took third with a net 65. Not eligible to win the tournament, Sonny Menzel took third place points with a net 64. Dave Pearce and Matt Hurst won the CP’s. John Justus won both the LD’s. John also came within one foot of driving the 337 yard 6th hole. Matt Hurst had two birdies and a CP to sneak by Nemon Williamson and win the Points Championship by one point. Nemon Williamson won the Scoring Average Championship for the year. In third round pyramid play it was Neal Stachowicz over Larry Campbell.
1996 – The 26th annual Winners Tournament held at Franklin Canyon G.C. on September 28th was won by Ron Powers. Howard Nitzkowski finished second with Denzil Storbeck and Nemon Williamson tied for third place. Although not eligible Larry Odom took the third place points. Kevin Peck and Ron Powers won the CP’s with Nemon Williamson and Dan Riley taking the LD’s. Mike Cook won the Points Championship, Howard Nitzkowski took the Scoring Average Championship. In third round pyramid play it was Dave Pearce over Bill Sharp. In semifinal play it was Rollin Podwys over Dan Tiburcio and Dave Pearce over Mike Cook.
1997 – The 27th annual Winners Tournament was held for the first time at Cypress Lakes G.C. on October 25th. Mike Cook won his second Winners Tournament 23 years after winning his first. Neal Stachowicz and Nemon Williamson tied for second with Larry Campbell and Floyd Duggins taking third place. Mike Cook and John Ortiz won the CP’s, Nemon Williamson and John Ortiz won the LD’s. Mike Cook won the Points Championship for the year, Brian Cook won the Scoring Average Championship.
1998 – The 28th annual Winners Tournament was held at Cypress Lakes G.C. on October 10th, with the temperature in the high seventies and a strong Northwest wind which subsided on the back nine. Rob Yarbrough won his first Winners Tournament having previously finished second in 1993. Jim Aton and Mike Narodzonek finished second with Larry Campbell taking third. Not eligible but taking third place points were Boyd Cook and Matt Hurst. Rob Yarbrough and Boyd Cook won the CP’s, Brian Cook and Steve Blotzer won the LD’s. Matt Hurst eagled the 508 yd. 10th hole and Larry Campbell missed an eagle 3 by 4 inches on the par 5, 17th hole. Don Scribner won the Points Championship for the year. Don also came back to win the Scoring Average Championship.
1999 – The 29th annual Winners Tournament was held at Sonoma G.C. in late September with the temperature in the mid nineties and very little wind. Dave Pearce won his second Winners Tournament 27 years after winning his first in 1972. Steve Blotzer was runner-up with Debbie Menzel taking third place. Steve Blotzer also had a closest to the pin and a long drive. Matt Hurst won the other LD, Mike Cook the other CP. Mike Cook shot a gross 39 on the front nine. Denzil Storbeck, after shooting a poor round, hung on to win both the Tournament Points and Scoring Average Championships for the year.
2000 – The 30th annual Winners Tournament was played at Franklin Canyon G.C. on October 7th on a cool, low 70’s day with a blustery west wind. Only 6 players that were eligible played with 4 that were not for a total of 10. Mike Cook and Dan Riley tied for first place, Don Scribner and Ed Vegas tied for second and Dave Pearce and Bob Simonson tied for third. Although not eligible Rob Yarbrough took the first place points, Nemon Williamson took the second place points. Rob also won both LD’s. This moved both these players into the top eight points and qualified them for the Valero Cup Tournament. Dan Riley won both the Points and Scoring Average Championships for the year.
The Winners Tournament playoff was held at Paradise Valley G.C. in mid October. Mike Cook and Dan Riley tied again with net 70’s. The second playoff was played at Canyon Lakes C.C. on October 21st with Dan Riley winning with a net 71 to Mike’s 77.
2001 – The 31st annual Winners Tournament was played for the first time at Rancho Solano G.C. on September 29th. The temperature was in the low nineties but felt warmer because of the complete lack of wind. Eleven of the fourteen eligible players played plus two ineligible for a total of thirteen. For the second year in a row we had a tie for first place, this time between Dave Pearce and Bob Simonson with net 67’s, both players having two birdies apiece. Finishing second with net 71’s was the trio of Mike Cook, Denzil Storbeck ( also with two birdies ) and Nemon Williamson. Dan Riley took third place. Not eligible but taking first place points was Matt Hurst with an excellent net 64 including three birdies and a gross 38 on the tough back nine. Sharing third place points with a net 71 was Steve Blotzer. Nemon Williamson had a gross 38 on the front nine, won both long drives and a closest to the pin helping him to win the Points Championship for the year. Nemon also tied with Bob Simonson for the most birdies for the year. Sandie Cook won the closest to the pin on the eight hole. Debbie Menzel and Rick Carr passed Sonny Menzel and tied for the Scoring Average Championship at 72.60. Debbie won the third tie breaker to become the Scoring Average Champion for 2001. In Pyramid Tournament play, in the semi-finals it was Matt Hurst over Mike Cook and at a very windy Rio Vista G.C. it was Debbie Menzel over John Ortiz.
The Winners Tournament playoff was held at Canyon Lakes C.C. on October 13th during the Valero Cup Tournament. Bob Simonson was down 5 strokes to Dave Pearce after the front nine but came back to go one stroke up after 17 holes. The match went down to the last hole with Dave making a par, winning the playoff over Bob by one stroke and claiming his third Winners Tournament crown. ( ties a record )
2002 – The 32nd annual Winners Tournament was played for the second year in a row at Rancho Solano G.C. on September 29th. The temperature was in the low seventies with a moderate wind which picked up on the back nine. Nineteen of the twenty three eligible players played plus five ineligible for a total of twenty four. Mike Cook after shooting a gross 79 (38+41) captured his third Winners Tournament.( ties a record ) Finishing second with an idential gross score (38+41) was Nemon Williamson. Mike Katz and Mike Osada tied for third place. Nemon Williamson and Brian Skinner won the long drives. Sandie Cook won the closest to the pin on the eight hole for the second year in a row. Mike Narodzonek won the CP on the 15th hole. Mike Osada won the Scoring Average Championship at 67.60. ( a new post hdcp. slope scoring record ) Mike Cook won the Points Championship and was also the birdie leader for the year with 11.
2003 – The 33nd annual Winners Tournament was played for the third year in a row at Rancho Solano G.C. on September 27th. The temperature was in the mid eighties with essentially no wind which led to perfect playing conditions. Seventeen of the twenty one eligible players played plus three ineligible for a total of twenty. Kevin Peck claimed his first major tournament win shooting a net 62 which was helped out by shooting a gross 38 on the tough back nine. Finishing tied for second with identical net scores of 63 were Darwin Richey and Bob Simonson. Rick Carr took third place and moved into the number eight points spot to claim the last qualifying position for the Valero Cup. Matt Hurst and Mike Katz won the long drives. Mike also claimed the most LD’s for the year with four. Darwin Richey and Rob Yarbrough took the CP’s. Rob Yarbrough moved past Mike Cook to take the Scoring Average Championship at 71.67 and also won the Points Championship for the year. Neal Stachowicz was the birdie leader for the year with 10. Shot of the day went to Bob Simonson who hit a 110 yard wedge over the pin on the par five seventh hole, the ball roll back down the hill and into the hole for a birdie 4.
2004 – The “34th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the first time at Wildhorse G.C. on Saturday, September 11th with a 9am start time. The temperature at the finish was in the high nineties but with essentially no wind all day we had perfect playing conditions. Sixteen of the nineteen eligible players played plus five ineligible for a total of twenty one. Matt Hurst claimed his first Winners Tournament win shooting an excellent gross 78 (tied the low gross course record), net 65 which was helped out by shooting a gross 38 on the front nine. This was Matt’s fifth major tournament win. Finishing tied for second with identical net scores of 66 were Kevin Peck and Rob Yarbrough. Rob finished strong playing the last four holes in one under par. The going in odds on favorite Debbie Menzel finished third with a net 67. Bob Simonson was bumped by Matt and Kevin from the number seven spot to the ninth spot for the Valero Cup tournament. No one was able to hit the narrow long drive fairways so the long drives went unclaimed (Sandie Cook’s LD was not counted). Rick Carr and Mike Cook took the CP’s. Mike with his fourth CP won the most for the year. Debbie Menzel maintained her points and scoring average leads and claimed both championships for the year. Debbie also shared the most long drives for the year with Nemon Williamson. Ten players had birdies for the day, Nemon and Mitch Miller had two apiece Matt Hurst was the birdie leader for the year with 7. Dave Pearce shot a gross 39 on the front nine. Sandie Cook mistakenly played the wrong ladies tees (was disqualified) but shot a strong gross 87, net 62. In third round pyramid play it was Mike Cook and Rob Yarbrough tying (at Paradise Valley). Rob and Mike played again at Paradise Valley and this time it was Rob over Mike by 2 strokes. Rob will go on to play Debbie Menzel in the finals.
2005 – The “35th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the first time at Indian Valley G.C. on Saturday, September 10th with a 10am start time. The temperature was unseasonable cool with reading’s only in the low seventies. A cool persistent west wind blew throughout the round. Seventeen of the twenty-two eligible players played plus four ineligible for a total of twenty one. Debbie Menzel claimed her first Winners Tournament shooting an excellent net 66. This was Debbie’s second major win and her tenth career tournament win. Finishing tied for second with identical net scores of 70 were Sheldon Custer and Karl Fails. Neal Stachowicz finished third with a net 72 helped out by making two birdies in the first five holes he played. There were no changes in the top eight point places for the Valero Cup tournament. Matt Hurst and AJ Jones (his first) took the CP’s. In a very competitive year 14 different players won a CP, Matt Hurst with 2 lead the way. The LD’s were won by Rick Simonson (his first) and Rob Yarbrough. Again we had 13 different players claim a LD, Steve Blotzer, Matt Hurst and Rob Yarbrough had 2 apiece. Mike Cook maintained his points lead for the year and claimed his 8th Tournament Points Championship. Chris Kelly won the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Birdies were rare again for this tournament, aside from Neal’s two AJ Jones, Rick Simonson and Denzil Storbeck had one apiece. Larry Campbell was the birdie leader for the year with 6. There was no pyramid play but it will be Dave Pearce vs Sonny Menzel in the finals. Debbie with her win moved into first place in the Valero Golf Rankings, Rick Simonson held on to the # 2 spot, Neal Stachowicz with his third place finish moved into the # 3 spot, Ken Dorsey slipped into the # 4 spot with Jim Spurgeon claiming the # 5 spot.
2006 – The “36th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the first time at Shadow Lakes G.C. on Saturday, September 30th with a 9am start time. The temperature was unseasonable cool with reading’s only in the low to mid sixties. A somewhat cool persistent west wind blew throughout the round. Only fourteen of the twenty-three eligible players played plus four ineligible for a total of eighteen. Chris Kelly claimed his first Winners Tournament and first major shooting an excellent net 68. He improved his front nine score by 10 strokes on the back nine. Kevin Peck shot a net 32 on the front nine but slipped coming in to finish in second place with a net 70. Sandie Cook finished third with a net 71. With his win Chris Kelly moved into the top eight point places for the Valero Cup bumping Dave Pearce into 9th place. Floyd Duggins and Neal Stachowicz took the CP’s. In another very competitive year 13 different players won a CP, Floyd Duggins, Matt Hurst and Nemon Williamson with 3 each lead the way. The LD’s were both won by Sonny Menzel, these two points moved him past Matt Hurst and gave him the Points Championship for the year. In a very competitive year 8 different players had a chance to claim the Points Championship going into the Winners Tournament. We had 12 different players claim a LD, Debbie Menzel and Nemon Williamson had 3 apiece. Michael Katz won the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Birdies were rare again for this tournament, Ken Dorsey, Chris Kelly and Dave Pearce had one apiece. Nemon Williamson was the birdie leader for the year with 9. Ed Vegas had one eagle for the year and tied Nemon Williamson for the most career eagles with two. In third round Pyramid play it was Michael Katz over Matt Hurst in a very close match (@ Rancho Solano). Michael will face John Ortiz and Dave Pearce in the finals. Chris Kelly with his win moved into first place in the Valero Golf Rankings, Kevin Peck with his second place finish moved into the # 2 spot, Denzil Storbeck slipped into the # 3 spot, Dave Pearce slipped from # 1 to the # 4 spot with Debbie Menzel claiming the # 5 spot.
2007 – The “37th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the second year in a row at Shadow Lakes G.C. on Saturday, September 22nd with a 8am start time. Last year the temperature was unseasonable cool with reading’s only in the low to mid sixties. This year rain was added, it rained hard early but stopped just as we teed off, we did have some showers half way through the back nine. Only sixteen of the twenty-three eligible players played plus three ineligible for a total of nineteen. Nemon Williamson claimed his first Winners Tournament and third major shooting an excellent gross 76 net 66. The first place prize money was sweetened by a generous contribution by Rob Yarbrough. In winning his third major Nemon qualified for the Valero Golf Club’s “Hall of Fame”. With his win Nemon Williamson won the Points Championship for the year. In another very competitive year 11 different players had a chance to claim the Points Championship going into the Winners Tournament. Bob Simonson shot a net 67 to finish in second place. John Ortiz finished third with a net 68. Steve Blotzer and Nemon Williamson took the CP’s. In another very competitive year 12 different players won a CP, Steve Blotzer, Larry Campbell, Michael Katz and Nemon Williamson with 2 each led the way. The LD’s were both won by Michael Katz. We had 9 different players claim a LD during the year, Steve Page with 5 led the way closely followed by Michael Katz with 4. Bob Bohnet won the Scoring Average Championship for the year by winning a tie breaker with AJ Jones. Dave Pearce had two birdies, Sandie Cook, Sonny Menzel, Bob Simonson, Nemon Williamson and Rob Yarbrough had one apiece. The pin locations were difficult, each one seemed to be sitting on a crown. Nemon Williamson was again the birdie leader for the year with 7. In first round Pyramid play it was Rob Yarbrough over Mike DeHart by forfeit. In second round play it was John Ortiz over Rob Yarbrough. In third round Pyramid play it was Don Scribner over Michael Katz and John Ortiz over Ken Dorsey (@ Blue Rock-east). 2008 – The “38th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the first time at Foxtail – North G.C. on Saturday, September 27th with a 9am start time. The weather conditions were ideal, temperature in the low nineties with essentially no wind. The greens that were aerated just a week and a half before the tournament were lumpy and bumpy but the field came through with an astounding 21 birdies and an eagle. A great turnout, eighteen of the twenty eligible players played plus five ineligible for a total of twenty three. At Foxtail if you don’t go low you might as well go home. Debbie Menzel claimed her second Winners Tournament and third major shooting an excellent gross 84 net 62. She shot a gross 39 on the front nine and started out her back nine by holing out her second shot on the par 4 tenth hole for an eagle two. With all that she only managed to win by one stroke as Dave Pearce shot a two over par gross score of 74 (new course record) which included 4 birdies (ties John Justus’ runner-up record). He also broke the low gross record for the Winners Tournament by one stroke. Four players tied for 3rd place with net 67’s, Ken Dorsey, Todd Lopez, Sonny Menzel and Kevin Peck. Brittany Hurst, not eligible for the WT won the third place points with a net 66. Kevin Peck and Todd Lopez had gross 39’s on the front nine, Ken Dorsey shot a 39 on the back nine. With her win Debbie won the Points Championship for the year. In another very competitive year 10 different players had a chance to claim the Points Championship going into the Winners Tournament. Floyd Duggins and Brittany Hurst (her first) took the CP’s. In another very competitive year 11 different players won a CP, Mike Cook with 3 led the way. The LD’s were won by Todd Lopez and Matt Hurst. We had 12 different players claim a LD during the year, Debbie Menzel and Dave Pearce led the way with 2 each. AJ Jones won the Scoring Average Championship for the year after losing a tie breaker last year for the title. Ken Dorsey had three birdies, Randy Butler and Kevin Peck had two apiece. Other birdie shooters were; Bob Boyer, Larry Campbell, Mike Cook, Brittany Hurst (her first), Todd Lopez, Debbie Menzel, Sonny Menzel, Don Scribner and Bob Simonson. Dave Pearce was the birdie leader for the year with 10. In second round pyramid play it was Bob Boyer over Ken Dorsey (@ Green Tree GC). In third round pyramid play it was Todd Lopez over Bob Boyer. The absent Neal Stachowicz moved into first place in the Valero Golf Rankings, Jerry Crumrine slipped into the second spot, Kevin Peck moved up from # 7 to the # 3 spot and joined Mike Osada, John Ortiz is at # 4 with Nemon Williamson holding the # 5 position.
2009 – The “39th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the first time at Roddy Ranch G.C. on Saturday, September 19th with a 8:30am start time. The weather conditions were good, high clouds kept the temperature down, it was in the low nineties at the end of play. The normal westerly wind came up only on the last few holes. The greens were very fast but did have a lot of damage on them, chipping unto the greens and holding was very difficult. A fair turnout, fourteen of the twenty one eligible players played plus six ineligible for a total of twenty. Before the tournament results were announced Matt Hurst was offically inducted into the Valero Golf Club’s “Hall of Fame”. Bob Simonson after finishing tied for 1st and losing a playoff in 2001 and finishing 2nd by one stroke in 2003 & 2007 came through to win his second Winners Tournament, his first being in 1977. Bob shot a gross 86 net 66 and tied the low net course record. Steve Blotzer took second place with a net 68.Two players tied for 3rd place with net 70’s, Glenn Campbell and Matt Hurst. Sonny Menzel won the Points Championship (his second) for the year. In a good competitive year 6 different players had a chance to claim the Points Championship going into the Winners Tournament. Glenn Campbell won the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Larry Campbell, Matt Hurst and Bob Simonson had two birdies apiece. 2010 – The “40th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the first time at Mare Island G.C. on Saturday, September 25th with a 10:00am start time. The weather conditions were good, warm to start with, a breeze came up in the middle of the round but dropped off again, the temperature approached 100 degrees at the end of play. The greens were ok but inconsistent in speed. A good turnout, fifteen of the eighteen eligible players played plus six ineligible for a total of twenty one. Jerry Crumrine won his first Winners Tournament. Jerry shot a gross 87 net 65. Floyd Duggins took second place with a net 67.Three players tied for 3rd place with net 70’s, Gary Beckman, Sandie Cook and Neal Stachowicz. Floyd Duggins won the Points Championship for the year. 2011 – After 15 years we returned to the Boundary Oak GC for the “41st” annual Winners Tournament. It was the sight of the 1975 W.T. (Gary Beckman), the 1983 W.T.(Clar Reyes) and the 1989 W.T.(John Ortiz). Play took place on Saturday, October 15th with a 10:00am start time. The weather conditions were okay, high clouds the entire day with temperatures in the high 70’s and very little wind. The course was not in the best condition for playing the Winners Tournament, the fairways were fuzzy and the greens had just been aerated that week. A good turnout, fourteen of the nineteen eligible players played plus one ineligible for a total of fifteen. Sonny Menzel won his first Winners Tournament and 3rd major. Sonny shot a gross 85 net 65. Nemon Williamson took second place with a gross 79, net 67. Two players tied for 3rd place with net 69’s, Steve Blotzer and Neal Stachowicz. Randy Butler, Neal Stachowicz and Nemon Williamson shot gross 38’s on the front nine. Mike Cook (his 9th) won the Points Championship for the year. Randy Butler and Larry Campbell (his 15th) took the CP’s. In another very competitive year 12 different players won a CP, Mike Cook and Floyd Duggins had 3 apiece for the year. Both LD’s were won by Randy Butler. We had 10 different players claim a LD during the year, Randy Butler and Michael Katz led the way with 3 each. 2012 – After 12 years we returned to the Franklin Canyon GC for the playing of the “42nd” annual Winners Tournament. It was the sight of the 1976 W.T. (Harland Stuart), the 1977 W.T. (Bob Simonson), the 1984 W.T. (Scotty Coffin), the 1993 W.T. (Gary Beckman), the 1996 W.T. (Ron Powers) and the 2000 W.T.(Dan Riley). Play took place on Saturday, September 15th with a 10:00 am start time. The weather conditions were okay, the afternoon prevailing wind was with us from the start of play but was not a major factor. The temperature was in the high 70’s at the end of play. The course was in awful condition for playing the Winners Tournament, the fairways were dirt (even bumping the ball didn’t help) and the greens were lumpy, bumpy and very very slow. A fair turnout, thirteen of the nineteen eligible players played plus one ineligible for a total of fourteen. Original golf club member Bob Simonson (20th career win) won his third Winners Tournament 35 years after winning his first WT at Franklin Canyon with an identical net 65 score. Bob was one of 4 players that could meet the qualifications for the Hall of Fame entry and with his win he did, 250 tour. points and 3 majors tour. wins. Debbie Menzel took second place with a net 69. Randy Butler took 3rd place with net a 70. Randy Butler shot gross 38 on the back nine, Gary Beckman had a gross 39 on the same nine. Matt Hurst (his 2nd) won the Points Championship for the year in a tie breaker (most 1st places) over Kevin Peck. Sandie Cook and Debbie Menzel took the CP’s. In another very competitive year 11 different players won a CP, Brittany Hurst led the way with 3 for the year. Both LD’s were won by Randy Butler. We had 7 different players claim a LD during the year, Brittany Hurst led the way with 5 for the year. Brittany Hurst won the Scoring Average Championship for the year (her second in the last 3 years). Randy Butler figured out the greens and made 3 birdies for the day, other birdie shooters were Mike Cook, Sonny Menzel and Don Scribner with one each. Randy Butler and Mike Cook tied for the birdie leaders for the year with 9 apiece. In third round pyramid play it was Sonny Menzel over Rob Yarbrough. It’s Debbie Menzel, Sonny Menzel and Kevin Peck in the pyramid finals. Kevin Peck maintained first place in the Valero Golf Rankings, Matt Hurst moved up to the second spot, Mike Cook slipped to the # 3 spot, Brittany Hurst held at the # 4 spot with Nemon Williamson moved up to the # 5 position. In the Player of the Year race it’s Kevin Peck first and Matt Hurst second, both players can still win P of Y depending on the Pyramid Tournament outcome.
2013 – After 10 years we returned to the Rancho Solano GC for the playing of the “43rd” annual Winners Tournament. It was the sight of the 2001 W.T. (Dave Pearce), the 2002 W.T. (Mike Cook) and the 2003 W.T. (Kevin Peck). Play took place on Saturday, September 28th with a 09:40 am start time. The weather conditions were perfect, temperature in the mid 80’s, the afternoon prevailing wind was absent, just some high clouds and some mysterious smoke. The course was in good shape, the greens were a little slower than normal but the pin placements were pretty tough, especially the blue ones. A good turnout, fourteen of the seventeen eligible players played plus five ineligible for a total of nineteen. Sonny Menzel with a net 66 won his second Winners Tournament in the last three years and gained 9 tournament points, enough to qualify him for the Valero Golf Club “Hall of Fame”. Matt Hurst took second place with a net 67. Neal Stachowicz took 3rd place with net a 68. Floyd Duggins, not eligible also took the third place tournament points. Other under par net scores were shot by Mike Cook & Nemon Williamson (69) and Bob Simonson & Alex Tegenkamp (70). Matt Hurst and Nemon Williamson shot gross 39’s on the front nine. Going into the tournament 10 different players had a chance to win the Points Championship, Neal Stachowicz (his 1st) won the Points Championship for the year. Nemon Williamson made 3 birdies for the day including back to back birdies on the first two holes, other birdie shooters were Randy Butler, Mike Cook, AJ Jones, Sonny Menzrel and Alex Tegenkamp with two each. Additional birdie shooters were Matt Hurst and Neal Stachowicz with one apiece. Randy Butler led the birdie leaders for the year with 8. 2014 – After 22 years we returned to the Kennedy GC for the playing of the “44th” annual Winners Tournament. It was the sight of the 1980 W.T. (Boyd Cook), the 1981 W.T. (Don Dean), the 1987 W.T. (Drew Paterson), the 1990 W.T. (Mark Reinhart), the 1991 W.T. (Sandie Cook) and the 1992 W.T. (Ed Vegas). Play took place on Saturday, September 13th with a 09:00 am start time, however a course mixup had us wait until 9:45 am to tee off. The weather conditions were good, some early high clouds to start with, the temperature in the high 80’s, the afternoon prevailing wind was absent. The course however was in bad shape, the greens were slow and very bumpy and some of the fairways were dirt. A poor turnout, nine of the nineteen eligible players played plus two ineligible for a total of eleven. Ongoing Refinery operating problems caused some players to miss the tournament. Kevin Peck with a net 71 won his second Winners Tournament (his 20th career win) and third major which was enough to qualify him for the Valero Golf Club “Hall of Fame”. Sandie Cook also needing another major win took second place with a net 74. Bob Boyer took 3rd place with net a 75. Mike Cook, not eligible also took the second place tournament points which put him into the Valero Cup. Two players with a chance to win the tournament had it disappear by taking a 9 and an 11 on the par five 18th hole. Going into the tournament 4 different players had a chance to win the Points Championship, Bob Boyer (his 1st) won the Points Championship for the year. Mike Cook and Kevin Peck took the CP’s. In another very competitive year 8 different players won a CP, Mike Cook and Rob Villarreal led the way with 3 each for the year. The LD’s were won by Steve Blotzer and Alex Tegenkamp (his first). We had 7 different players claim a LD during the year, Matt Hurst led the way with 4 for the year. Bob Boyer won the Scoring Average Championship for the year (his first). Birdies were scarce, Kevin Peck birdied 2 of the last 3 holes to lead the way, Steve Blotzer made one birdie. Nemon Williamson led the birdie leaders for the year with 7. 2015 – Yocha-De-He GC was chosen for the playing of the “45th” annual Winners Tournament. It was the site of the 2009 Valero Cup (Glen Campbell) and the 2010 Valero Cup (Jerry Crumrine). Play took place on Saturday, September 19th with a 12:00 noon start time. The weather conditions were hot to say the least, temperatures in the mid to high 90’s with essentially no wind. The course was in fair shape but the greens had been aerated 10 days prior to our play, putting was very difficult. A decent turnout, ten of the twelve eligible players played plus two ineligible for a total of twelve. Rob Villarreal with a net 66 won his first Winners Tournament (and second major). Alex Tegenkamp took second place with a net 68. Defending champion Kevin Peck took 3rd place with a net 69. Rick Morgan, not eligible took the first place tournament points with a net 65 breaking Glen Campbell’s low net course record. Going into the tournament 4 different players had a chance to win the Points Championship, Don Scribner (his 3rd) won the Points Championship for the year. Mike Cook and Rob Yarbrough (his 10th) took the CP’s. In another very competitive year 9 different players won a CP, Mike Cook, Don Scribner and Rob Yarbrough led the way with 2 each for the year. Both LD’s were won by Matt Hurst. We had 7 different players claim a LD during the year, Matt Hurst led the way with 3 for the year. Rob Yarbrough won the Scoring Average Championship for the year (his second). Birdies were pretty scarce, Randy Butler, Matt Hurst, Kevin Peck, Alex Tegenkamp and Rob Villarreal made one birdie apiece. Birdies were scarce for the entire year, the lowest field total since 2000. Rob Villarreal and Nemon Williamson led the birdie leaders for the year with 4 each. Randy Butler shot a very good gross 38 on the front nine, the golf God’s took note of this and adjusted Randy’s play on the back nine. Rob Villarreal with his win moved to the top of the rankings, Rob Yarbrough slipped to # 2, Bob Boyer held at # 3, Don Scribner at # 4 and Kevin Peck at # 5. In the Player of the Year race it’s over, Alex Tegenkamp wins his first Player of the Year title.
2016 –The “46th” annual Winners Tournament sponsored by Mike and Sandie Cook was held at Paradise Valley GC on Monday, September 12th starting at 10:00 am. The weather was cool with a strong prevailing wind the entire round. The course was in good shape, the greens on the front nine were faster than those on the back. Because of a lack of tournaments this year all players that had a Valero Golf Club handicap were eligible to play in and win the tournament. We had 16 eligible players for the tournament. Matt Hurst ($100.00) won his second Winners and 7th major after shooting an excellent net 67 which was helped out by shooting a gross 38 on the back nine. Steve Blotzer ($50.00) was a close second with a net 69. Three players tied for third place with net 73’s, Floyd Duggins, John Perrin and Bob Simonson ($20.00). Special flights were set up for tournament points only, in the first flight it was Matt Hurst 1st, Mike Cook 2nd and Vinny Zabat 3rd. In the second flight it was Steve Blotzer 1st, Floyd Duggins, John Perrin and Bob Simonson 2nd and Neal Stachowicz and Ed Vegas 3rd. Rob Villarreal and Kevin Peck won the CP’s, John Perrin won both of the LD’s, all those players received a sleeve of Titleist Pro V-1’s. We had two birdie shooters, both with 2 apiece, Kevin Peck and John Perrin. In first round pyramid play it was Matt Hurst over Alex Tegenkamp and Neal Stachowicz over Don Scribner by forfeit. The Blotzer – Williamson match still needs to be played. Rob Villarreal maintained his # 1 ranking, Rob Yarbrough his # 2, Matt Hurst jumped from # 8 to # 3 with his major win, Randy Butler slipped to $4, Kevin Peck held at # 5.
2017 – The “47th” annual Winners Tournament sponsored by Mike and Sandie Cook was held at Paradise Valley GC on Wednesday, October 11th starting at 10:48 am. The weather was the thing, with wildfires burning in the entire area it was very smoky especially on the front nine. We lucked out on the back, we finished with blue skies with the temperature in the mid 70’s and very little wind. The course was in good shape, the greens were fast like they used to be. Alex Tegenkamp ($100.00) won his first Winners and second major after shooting a net 68. Sandie Cook ($50.00) was a close second with a net 71. Third place went to Mike Cook with a net 72 ($20.00). Alex Tegenkamp won the CP. Neal Stachowicz and Mike Cook who hit his best drive of the day won the LD’s, all those players received a sleeve of Titleist Pro V-1’s. We had only one birdie shooter, Mike Cook had 3 for the day. With one point for winning his long drive Neal Stachowicz ended the year ½ point shy of induction into the Hall of Fame. Mike Cook won the Points Championship for the year in a triple tie breaker over Alex Tegenkamp. Sandie Cook won the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Steve Blotzer maintained his # 1 ranking, Floyd Duggins his # 2, Alex Tegenkamp held # 3 with his major win, Sandie Cook moved up to # 4, Mike Cook moved up to # 5.
2018 – The “48th” annual Winners Tournament sponsored by Mike and Sandie Cook was held at Wildhorse GC on Monday, October 15th starting at 09:52 am. When we arrived at the course we were greeted with a very strong North wind which blew the entire day but did drop off some towards the end of the round. The course was in good shape but the greens had just been aerated the week before and were extremely slow. After some confusion on who was eligible to win the Winners, Neal Stachowicz ($100.00) won his first Winners and seventh major after shooting a net 71. Eddie Pereira ($50.00) was a close second with a net 73. Third place went to Mike Cook with a net 74 ($20.00). Mike Osada and Nemon Williamson won the CP‘s. Eddie Pereira and Sandie Cook (her 10th) won the LD’s, all those players received a sleeve of Titleist NXT Tour golf balls. Even though the greens were very difficult we did have some birdies, Eddie Pereira had two, Mike Cook and Nemon Williamson had one each. With eight points for having the low net score for the day (70) Steve Blotzer qualified for and was inducted into the Valero Golf Club’s Hall of Fame. Other tournament point winners were; Neal Stachowicz 4, Sandie Cook and Eddie Pereira 2 each. Mike Cook won the Points Championship for the year. Eddie Pereira won the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Mike Cook maintained his # 1 ranking, Eddie Pereira entered the rankings at # 2, Neal Stachowicz with his major win moved up to # 3, Nemon Williamson at # 4 with Alex Tegenkamp at # 5. For Player of the Year it’s 1-5, Eddie Pereira, Neal Stachowicz, Mike Cook, Steve Blotzer and Nemon Williamson. In the Pyramid Tournament it was Neal Stachowicz over Eddie Pereira and Steve Blotzer over Sandie Cook, Steve and Neal will face each other in the finals for the third consecutive year. The conditions were tough, Dave Pearce was the only player to par the cross wind par five 5th hole, Steve Blotzer and Neal Stachowicz were the only players to make a par on the difficult par four 18th hole. 2019 – The “49th” annual Winners Tournament sponsored by Mike and Sandie Cook was held on a beautiful fall day at Paradise Valley GC on Thursday, October 3rd starting at 11:06 am. The weather was very nice, temperature in the high 70’s and the high winds that were predicted didn’t show, just the normal prevailing wind on the back nine. The pace of play was really good. The greens were in good shape but the fairways were thin and ragged in some areas. No confusion on who was eligible to win the Winners this year, Neal Stachowicz ($100.00) won his second Winners back to back and ninth major after shooting a net 65. Floyd Duggins ($50.00) was a close second with a net 67. Third place went to Sandie Cook with a net 70 ($20.00). No one hit the green on the tough par 3 third hole, Neal Stachowicz won the CP on the 12th hole. Neal Stachowicz and Mike Cook won the LD’s, all those players received a sleeve of Titleist NXT Tour golf balls. Even though the greens were very nice only one birdie for the entire field, Neal Stachowicz had the one. Floyd Duggins after having a great year won both the Points Championship and the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Floyd Duggins maintained his # 1 ranking, Neal Stachowicz with his major win moved up to a very close second, Alex Tegenkamp is at # 3, Dave Pearce very close at # 4 with Eddie Pereira at # 5. For Player of the Year it’s 1-5, Neal Stachowicz, Floyd Duggins, Dave Pearce, Mike Cook and Sandie Cook. In the Pyramid Tournament in second round play it was Neal Stachowicz over Sandie Cook.
