We played in the morning following the first rain storm of the season.  The temperature made it into the low seventies but a brisk wind that seemed to blow across almost every hole we played made for some tough conditions. On the tough par 5 fifth hole some scores posted were 7, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 14. The greens had not been aerated but were inconsistent in speed and hard to read. Only 3 birdies were made, one each by Mike Cook and Rob Yarbrough, Sonny Menzel birdied the # 1 handicap hole. 2009 – The 23rd Valero Cup tournament was played for the first time at Yocha-De-He G.C. on Saturday, October 3rd starting at 9:00 am. The weather was great, temperature in the mid 70’s, a mild wind started on about the 4th hole but became very strong on the last few finishing holes. Yocha-De-He golf course translated means very large and very fast greens, a tough start, a 447 yard par 4 and a tough finish, a 417 yard par 4. The greens were very fast, like Roddy Ranch hard to chip to but these greens were very smooth and tricky, this combined with very difficult pin placements led to some high scores. At the end of the front nine Jerry Crumrine led the way with a net 33, Glenn Campbell & AJ Jones were at 35 with Don Scribner at 36. Glenn Campbell holed out from off the 18th green for a double bogey 6 but that was good enough to earn him his first major championship win and the $80.00 winner takes all prize money. Don Scribner had the tournament won but took an 8 on the tough par 4 eighteenth hole and finished second. The # 1 ranked Michael Katz came through on the back nine with a gross 41 to finish third. Only three birdies were made, Glenn Campbell, Jerry Crumrine and Matt Hurst had one apiece. Other top eight players included; Jerry Crumrine, Matt Hurst, AJ Jones, Sonny Menzel and Bob Simonson. 2010 – The 24th Valero Cup tournament was played for the second year in a row at Yocha-De-He G.C. on Saturday, October 9th starting at 8:48 am. The weather was great, temperature in the mid 80’s at the end of play and unlike last year we had essentially no wind at all. The greens were good but not nearly as fast or as smooth as last year. Even without the wind it is still a tough start, a 451 yard par 4 and a tough finish, a 417 yard par 4 eighteenth hole. At the end of the front nine Floyd Duggins led the way with a net 32, Steve Blotzer at  net 35, Randy Butler at net 36 with Sandie Cook, Jerry Crumrine and Neal Stachowicz with net 38’s. As it was last year the tough par 4 eighteenth hole determined the winner. Last year Glenn Campbell holed out from off the 18th green for a double bogey 6 and won by one stroke over Don Scribner. This year Jerry Crumrine took a triple bogey 7 on the 18th but managed to win by one stroke over Floyd Duggins who made a bogey 5 and by 2 strokes over Neal Stachowicz who had a lost ball off the tee but still managed to make a double bogey 6. The weather was awlful, temperature in the low 50’s, a very strong westerly wind and intermittent rain showers were with us the entire day. The greens were very good and very fast. At the end of the front nine Matt Hurst led the way with a net 35, Neal Stachowicz at  net 36 and Larry Campbell at net 37. After shooting a net 33 on the back nine Matt Hurst wins his 4th Valero Cup and 6th major championship. Larry Campbell finished second 7 strokes back. The Peacock Gap greens were fuzzy and just sanded, some more than others which made green speed very difficult to judge. The bunkers contained very soft sand leading to embedded lies, the canal that winds throughout the course caught it’s share of golf balls. Play was from the blue tees.
