Memorable Pyramid Matches

Memorable matches include matches that were close or had a big turnaround during the round. If you have a match you think should be included,  let Mike Cook know about it. ( some Pyramid match scorecards are missing )

There were memorable matches in 1976 and 1977, unfortunately no scorecards exist from this period of time. There was no Pyramid Tournament in 1978.

1977 – Third round match in the losers bracket ( double elimination tournament ) between Mike Cook and Joe Luna @ old Blue Rock Springs G.C. ( from memory )  Mike had lost in the first round to Joe at Kennedy G.C. Joe shot an 89-33=56 to Mike’s 90-16=74. Joe known as a wild golfer did not hit his own fairway for 17 holes and did not lose a single golf ball. For the final insult his tee shot on # 18 hooked out way right over the water and came back into the middle of the fairway. Mike won over Floyd Duggins in the losers bracket. Joe lost in the second round to John Ortiz and came back to the losers bracket. Mike had to give Joe 15 strokes for this rematch. Mike had slowly and steadily reduced Joe’s lead to 3 strokes going to the 15th hole. Mike made a par to pick up one stroke and picked up one more on the par 4 sixteenth hole. Joe had a one stroke lead going to the 17th hole. Mike hit his tee shot right down the middle, Joe’s tee shot went off to the right into the 18th fairway. Mike hit his second shot on the front of the green. ( the pin was in the upper left hand part of the green ) Joe hit his second shot into a dirt area near the 18th  tee box behind some trees. On his next shot Joe mentioned to Mike he was going to hit his shot and please watch it as there was a lot of trees between him and the hole. Mike saw a dust cloud as Joe hit his shot out of the dirt, the ball ran across the ground, through all the trees, on to the fringe area, up over a large hump, and then ran clear across the green and stopped one foot from the hole. Joe tapped in for a par. Mike three putted from the front of the green for a bogey. Mike was now 2 strokes down going to the 18th hole. Joe hit a long tee shot right down the left center of the fairway. Mike hit his tee shot to the hump area on the left edge of the fairway which blocked out any shot towards the green. He tried to hook a long iron around the corner but it went right towards the 17th tee area. Joe using a utility wood topped his second shot down the fairway about 30 yards. Now using the same club, Joe hit a rocket, air mailing the green over the back. Mike and Joe looked for Mike’s ball but couldn’t find it in the tree area near the 17th tee. They finally found it had rolled down the cart path and ended up pin high on the par 5 hole. Joe’s ball was in 2 foot high grass behind the green. His first attempt didn’t get out, his second landed on the back of the green. He two putted for a double bogey 7. Mike chipped down close to the hole and then made a birdie 4 to win the match by one stroke. Mike would go on with wins over Dave Pearce, John Parker and Denzil Storbeck to win the losers bracket, then win over Rollin Podwys in the winners bracket before losing to John Ortiz in the finals.

1979 – Second round match between Dave Pearce and Tom Stead @ Diablo Creek G.C. Dave had won a match over Ron Kempka. Tom had won a match over Jim Spurgeon. He gained back 2 strokes on the par 3 fourth but then lost 6 strokes to Dave over the next four holes. After halving the par 3 eleventh Tom got back 2 strokes by making par on the par 5 twelfth. Dave made par on the 13th hole to pick up one stroke but then tripled the par 5 fourteenth to go 2 down. He picked up those two strokes on the 15th to even the match once again. They halved the 16th and 17th holes with bogeys and went to the 18th dead even. Tom made a par to Dave’s bogey to win the match by one stroke. The back nine started with John picking up one stroke on the 10th, halving the 11th and picking up two more strokes on the 12th to go one up. He gets to his second shot and tells Tom he’s going to hit his 5 iron ( he hit his 5 iron anywhere from 120 yds to 190 yds ). Andy hits his 5 iron up over the top of the large trees between 16 and 17 fairway and slices it back. Andy couldn’t see where it went and asked Tom if he saw it.      1982 – 3rd round match between Dave Pearce and Don Scribner @ Franklin Canyon G.C.

Dave had won matches over Bill Telepak and Rollin Podwys.

Don had won matches over Bob Simonson and John Ortiz.                                                                                                               Don had to give Dave one stroke for the match. Dave picked up one stroke on the 1st and 2nd holes but gave them back plus one taking a seven on the par 3, 6th hole. Dave picked up another stroke on the 7th hole with Don picking up one on the 9th hole. The match was dead even after nine holes. Starting the back nine Don took an 8 on the par 4 10th hole and a 7 on the par 5 13th hole giving Dave a 5 stroke lead. Don picked up one stroke on the 14th to reduce Dave’s lead to 4 but tripled the 15th. Dave returned the favor by taking a  triple on the 16th but picked up one stroke on the 17th hole for a five stroke lead going to the par 5 eighteenth hole. The tees were on the left side of the tee box, Don commented that he would cut the dogleg by going over the trees and proceeded to hit a good drive. Dave followed Don’s lead but his tee shot hit the trees. He had to retee his drive and hit again. After a series of shots Dave was on the green in 6 strokes. Don after hitting a good drive hit his second shot on the green. Don was away and putted first making as he describes it a 90 foot snake putt that broke four ways for an eagle three. Dave had a long putt and putted up to within a couple of  feet. He then missed the putt giving Don the match by one stroke. Don would experience a similar fate later in the year in the finals match but that’s another story. Dave and Don would meet again the following year in a first round match at Green Tree G.C. Dave taking no chances shot a net 60 to win the match by 16 strokes.

Don Dean took a 10 on the par 4 first hole (now the 10th) followed by an 8 on the par 4 second hole (now the 11th) and decided to forfeit the match. Don Scribner talked him into continuing to play and on they went. Dean lost another stroke on the 3rd hole (now the 12th) but got it back on the 4th (now the 13th). Scribner took a 9 on the par 5 fifth (now the 14th) and a 8 on the par 3 seventh hole (now the 16th) to give Dean a 2 stroke lead. They halved the next two holes, then Scribner picked up one stroke on the 16th and 17th (now the 7th & 8th) holes for a two stroke lead going to the 18th hole (now the 9th). Scribner with a two stroke lead decided to play it safe and tee off with a 4 wood. He mishit his tee shot into a patch of tall wet grass just left off the tee. Dean hit his normal tee shot right down the middle of the fairway. Scribner decided he could hit his 4 wood out of the grass but the ball just barely moved, then one more try with the same result. He now had to take an unplayable lie and dropped out. Three more shots to the green, in the meantime Dean hit on the green in three and made the putt for a par 4. Scribner ended up with a nine and lost the 1982 Pyramid finals by three strokes. Moral of the story, if your competitor wants to forfeit the match to you, let them! Don Dean was the 1982 Pyramid Champion.

Todd had a bye in the first round, then had match wins over Sheldon Custer and Bob Boyer

Debbie had match wins over Matt Hurst, Steve Blotzer & Sandie Cook

Nemon had match wins over Dave Pearce, Brittany Hurst & John Ortiz

The 32nd Pyramid Tournament finals were held at Paradise Valley G.C. on Friday, November 7th, a beautiful fall day with temperatures in the low seventies and an unusual intermittent northeast wind blowing. The course was in good shape, the greens speed slower than normal. Todd Lopez, Debbie Menzel and Nemon Williamson made up the final threesome for the championship. The problem was with a 1pm start time to finish before dark. Mike Cook didn’t play as planned but tended pins, raked bunkers, looked for wayward golf balls and made an occasional ruling. This round was highlighted by some excellent shots by all three players. On the opening hole Todd hit the shortest drive but came through with a bogey 6. Nemon’s drive was just short of the left fairway bunker, hit a short second, his 3rd was long left and then had some short game problems to end up with a 7. Debbie hit a good drive but then put her second shot in the right side hazard. Her short game gave her problems which led her to taking a 9. On the second hole Todd was way left with his drive but made a very good shot over the trees to just off the green back, from there he made a bogey 5. Debbie again hit a good drive but thinned her second shot into the front hazard, the ball ran through and was just short of the green. A good chip and putt saved her par 4. Nemon hit a very good drive leaving him a 100 yard second shot. He used a pitching wedge and holed out his shot for an eagle 2. On the par 3 third hole both Todd and Nemon made par 3’s. Debbie put her tee shot into the hazard, this led to a triple bogey 6. On the par 5 fourth hole Todd hit his tee shot OB left but came back and made a double bogey 7. Debbie again found the hazard behind the green but made a very good bogey 6, Nemon also took a 6. On the par 4 fifth hole Nemon hit his tee shot left towards OB but hit a tree and bounced forward. Debbie hit a good drive, got on in 2 and 2 putted for a par 4. Nemon and Todd took bogey 5’s. On the par 4 sixth hole both Nemon and Todd hit their tee shots left, Debbie right down the middle. Nemon hit a very good shot from a difficult position to just on the green front. Todd hit his second shot right and into the water hazard. His ball was in the water a couple of inches with about 5 feet of very wet mud to stand on. He stood in the mud and hit a wedge over the huge front side bunker and just off the back of the green. You had to see it to believe it! From there he made a great bogey 5. Nemon and Debbie also had 5’s. On the short par 4 seventh hole Nemon hit a good drive, wedged pin high a 2 putted for a par 4. Debbie was long with her second shot and took 4 more shots for a 6. Todd 3 putted for a 6. On the par 3 eighth hole Nemon hit the front of the green, Debbie rolled just by the hole and was just long, Todd was way left of the green but got in for a bogey 4. Nemon 2 putted for a par. Debbie made a 15 foot downhill putt for a birdie 2. On the par 4 ninth hole both Nemon and Todd were left with their drives, Debbie right down the middle and long. All three players took bogey 5’s. At the end of the front nine both Debbie and Todd were 3 strokes up on Nemon. On the par 5 tenth hole Todd paid the price for not being familiar with the course hitting his second shot right into the right side water hazard but still made a bogey 6. Nemon also took a 6. Debbie hit the left fairway bunker with her tee shot, this eventually led to a double bogey 7. On the par 4 eleventh hole Todd hit his tee shot left, almost OB, Nemon was in the left fairway bunker, Debbie hit a very good tee shot down the middle. Todd hit his second shot right and into the rightside hazard. Nemon hit a low runner out of the bunker and onto the green and 2 putted for a par. Debbie took a bogey 5. Todd after his drop hit a tree and almost into the hazard again, all this led to him taking an 8 on the hole. On the short par 3 twelfth hole Debbie and Nemon made both par 3’s, Todd had a bogey 4. The par 4 thirteenth hole was the turning point in the match. Nemon would make a par 4, Debbie a double bogey 6 to go one down in the match. Todd hit his drive left, had a bad stance and put 2 balls left OB. The match was now down to two players. On the short par 4 fourteenth hole Debbie almost drove the green, Nemon was in the right side bunker, Todd left in the fairway. Todd made a par 4, short game errors led to bogey 5’s for Debbie and Nemon. On the par 3 fifteenth hole with a blue pin left Nemon hit the very right side of the green, Debbie hit a beautiful shot pin high about 10 feet from the hole. Todd hit the hazard with his tee shot. Nemon 3 putted for a bogey 4, Debbie just missed her birdie but made a par 3 to even the match. On the par 5 sixteenth hole Nemon hit his tee shot left. Debbie hit a good drive around the right side fairway bunker but the ball then went right into the hazard. Debbie went into the hazard and hit a fairway wood out of it, an excellent shot. Nemon layed up with his second shot, then hit his third shot just in the right side fringe on the green. Debbie hit a fairway wood for her third shot, it just missed going on the green and ended up in the right greenside bunker. To make things worse the bunker was in horrible shape, large footprints all over it. Debbie took a big swing but barely got out. A bad chip shot followed. She then just barely missed an uphill putt, just short by a couple of inches and took a 7. Nemon 2 putted for a par 5 and was up 2 strokes for the match. Arriving at the 17th hole it was getting dark, the moon was out to help us with the light. On the par 4 seventeenth hole Debbie was short with her second shot, chipped on and 2 putted for a bogey 5. Nemon was on the green in two but 3 putted for a 5. The match was still Nemon 2 up going to the eighteenth hole. One thing you don’t want to see is a bad shot right before you hit your tee shot. Todd hit his tee shot into the right side water hazard. Nemon gets on the tee, aiming at the left fairway bunkers, comes off the shot and puts his drive into the lake. Debbie hit her drive into the left side fairway bunkers. Nemon lays up short with an iron. Debbie hits another great shot out of the bunker just short and right of the green. Nemon hits the green with his fourth shot but leaves himself a long putt. Debbie chips her third shot on about 10 feet short of the pin. Nemon hits his putt within a couple inches of the hole and taps in for a 6. Debbie has to make her putt for a tie, hits an aggressive putt but it goes by the hole, then 2 putts for a 6. We finished the round in 3 hours, 56 minutes. Nemon will have his name engraved for the first time on the “Tom Stead Trophy” as the winner of the 32nd Pyramid Tournament.
