Club Championship Narratives
1982 – The first Club Championship was held with the eight lowest handicap players at the mid point of the golf season eligible to participate in a match play tournament. In the first round it was Mike Cook over Clar Reyes 3&2, Denzil Storbeck over Boyd Cook 1 up, Tom Palilonis over Don Scribner 5&3 and Rollin Podwys over Dave Pearce 4&3. In second round play it was Mike Cook over Denzil Storbeck 2 up and Rollin Podwys over Tom Palilonis 3&1. In the finals it was Rollin Podwys 1 up over Mike Cook to become the 1st Club Champion.
1983 – The second Club Championship was held with the eight lowest handicap players at the mid point of the golf season eligible to participate in the match play tournament. In the first round it was Mike Cook over Terrance Woram 2 & 1, Denzil Storbeck over Cullen Stephenson 2 & 1, Tom Palilonis over Bob Meyer 4 & 3 and Boyd Cook over Rollin Podwys 3 & 1. In second round play it was Denzil Storbeck over Mike Cook 2 & 1 and Tom Palilonis over Boyd Cook 3 & 2. In the finals it was Tom Palilonis over Denzil Storbeck 8 & 7. Tom became our second Club Champion.
1984 – The third Club Championship was held with the eight lowest handicap players at the mid point of the golf season eligible to participate in a match play tournament. In first round play it was Mike Cook over Dave Pearce 2 & 1, Bob Mathews over Rollin Podwys 3 & 1, Terrance Woram over Cullen Stephenson 3 & 2 and Denzil Storbeck over Don Larkin 7 & 5. In second round play it was Mike Cook over Bob Mathews 4 & 2 and Denzil Storbeck over Terrance Woram by forfeit. In the finals it was Denzil Storbeck over Mike Cook 2 up to become our third Club Champion.
1985 – The fourth Club Championship was held with the eight lowest handicap players at the mid point of the golf season eligible to participate in a match play tournament. In the first round it was Mike Cook over Boyd Cook 3 & 2, Dave Pearce over Denzil Storbeck 2 up, John Ortiz over Bob Mathews 6 & 5. The Cullen Stephenson, Bob Meyer match was not played. In second round play it was Dave Pearce over Mike Cook 3 & 1. The other matches were never completed and the tournament was dropped.
2000 – The first “ Valero Golf Club “ tournament was the Club Championship held at Rancho Solano G.C. on May 27th. The Club Championship format was changed from match play to a modified stableford points plus handicap system. The weather was ideal with the temperature in the mid 80’s and a moderate westerly wind. Dan Riley won the second flight and the first Club Championship since the mid eighties with a total stableford points plus handicap of 48 pts. John Ortiz took second with 40 pts., Ed Vegas third with 35 pts. Mike Cook won the first flight with 45 pts. after making par on the first 16 holes and finishing with 2 bogeys. Finishing second with 41 pts. was Denzil Storbeck, and Neal Stachowicz third with 40 pts. Mike Cook won the low gross Club Championship. Dan Riley shot a 39 on the front nine, had two birdies, and took over the points lead. Sonny Menzel kept his scoring lead. Marv Smith and Nemon Williamson won the CP’s, Dan Riley and Mike DeHart won the LD’s. Marv Smith, Neal Stachowicz and Larry Campbell each had two birdies. The course was in good condition but putting was still the key, the field had 9 birdies. Shot of the Day: Dave Pearce, after mishitting his drive, hit a 5 wood across the lake on the par four 11th hole to a pin just over the lake and then made the putt for a birdie.
2001 – Paradise Valley G.C. was the site for our Club Championship on June 23rd. After a solid week of temperatures above 100 degrees we played on a mild day but had a strong westerly wind. Play was started on the back nine first. We again used the modified stableford points system plus handicap to determine the Club Champion. Sonny Menzel and Bob Simonson tied for 1st place in the second flight with 44 points with Sonny winning the tie breaker to win the Club Championship and claim his first major. Jim Spurgeon finished second with 37 points and taking third with 34 points was Debbie Menzel. In the first flight, Mike Cook took first place with 35 points closely followed in second place by Dave Pearce with 34 points. Nemon Williamson claimed third place with 31 points, and won the long drive on the 5th hole with a 312 yard drive. Sonny Menzel won the long drive on the 13th hole with a 300 + yard drive. Dave Pearce won the CP and also took over the tournament points lead. Amazingly no one hit the green on the short par 3 twelfth hole for the other CP. Mike Cook won the low gross Club Championship. Sonny Menzel took over the scoring average lead. Bob Simonson had two birdies. To date in first round Pyramid play it was Dave Pearce over Sheldon Custer, Kevin Peck over Sandie Cook, Sonny Menzel over Dan Riley and John Ortiz over Steve Blotzer.
2002 – Paradise Valley G.C. was again the site for our Club Championship on May 18th. We played on a cool day with a very very strong westerly wind blowing. Play was started on the front nine. We again used the modified stableford points system plus handicap to determine the Club Champion. For the second year in a row the Club Champion came out of the second flight. The Club Championship was determined on the 18th hole. Rob Yarbrough after making par into a strong wind on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes came to the last hole with 43 points but made a triple bogey and lost two points. Veteran Valero Club golfer Darwin Richey came to the 18th hole with 41 points and made a par giving him 43 points for his first major win. Darwin had previously finished second in the 1976 and 1980 Winners Tournaments and also tied for first place in the 1984 tournament but did not participate in the playoff. Finishing second in the second flight was Rob Yarbrough with 41 points, in third was Mike Osada with 39 points. For the second year in a row in the first flight, Mike Cook took first place with 38 points, this time tying with Dave Pearce who also had 38 points. Denzil Storbeck closely followed in second place with 37 points. Rick Simonson continuing his good play claimed third place with 36 points. Mike Cook won the low gross Club Championship. Ed Vegas won the long drive on the 5th hole and also won the CP on the 12th hole. John Ortiz won the long drive on the 13th hole. Nemon Williamson won the CP on the 3rd hole. Rick Simonson maintained his tournament points lead. Mike Osada took over the scoring average lead. Mike Cook had three birdies and took over the birdies lead. To date in first round Pyramid play it was Dave Pearce over Sheldon Custer and Rollin Podwys over Steve Blotzer. Mike Cook and Denzil Storbeck were presented their Hall of Fame certificates.
2003 – Our first major championship of the year was played at Franklin Canyon G.C. on Saturday, May 31st starting at 8am. The playing conditions were perfect, temperatures in the seventies and eighties with a mild wind. Rob Yarbrough gathered 46 points and won the Club Championship for 2003. This win gave Rob his career grand slam having won all of the four majors at least once. Finishing second in the second flight was Sandie Cook with 43 points part of which were gained by making a birdie two on the second hole. Steve Blotzer with three natural birdies and Jim Spurgeon both had 39 points to take third place. Nemon Williamson after shooting a gross 77 picked up 41 points and won the first flight. He also won a CP and a LD and took over the points lead for the year. Matt Hurst with two birdies and Mike Cook tied for second place with 40 points. Mike Katz and Denzil Storbeck tied for third place with 39 points. Dave Pearce won the other CP. Mike Katz won the other LD. Nemon Williamson won the low gross Club Championship. Mike Narodzonek who didn’t play held on to the scoring average lead for the year. Steve Blotzer and Nemon Williamson took over the birdies lead with four apiece. In first round pyramid play it was Mike Osada over John Ortiz and Rod Robinson over Bob Boyer.
2004 – Our first major championship of the year was played at Shadow Lakes G.C. on Saturday, June 12th starting at 9am. The playing conditions were perfect, temperature in the seventies and eighties with a mild wind. Ken Dorsey after shooting a net 62 gathered 46 points and blew away the field to win his first tournament and major championship. He broke the low net course record by 4 strokes. Finishing in second place in the first flight was Matt Hurst with 40 points. Mitch Miller took third place with 37 points. The second flight results were much closer. Frank Lewin also with his first tournament win won the flight with 40 points. Finishing second one point behind was Debbie Menzel, another one point back was John Ortiz in third. Mike Cook won the low gross Club Championship. Matt Hurst won a CP and also had two birdies. Mike Cook won the other CP. Don Scribner and Debbie Menzel won the LD’s. Rob Yarbrough narrowly maintained his points lead for the year. Ken Dorsey took over the scoring average lead from Rick Simonson who didn’t play. John Ortiz and Neal Stachowicz both shot gross 39’s on the front nine. Mike Cook shot a gross 39 on the back nine. In first round pyramid play after previously tying twice it was Dave Pearce over Nemon Williamson by two strokes. In other first round play it was Steve Blotzer over Mike Katz (at Blue Rock Springs-East)
2005 – Our first major championship of the year was played at Roddy Ranch G.C. on Saturday, May 21st starting at 9am. The playing conditions were good, temperature in the low eighties but a persistent west wind made some shots difficult. Larry Campbell after shooting a net 66 gathered 44 points and won the Club Championship, his third major and 15th career tournament win. Finishing a very close second place in the first flight was Dave Pearce with 42 points. Hall of famer Don Scribner took third place with 40 points. The second flight results were also close. Rick Simonson won the flight with 41 points and won a CP. Finishing second one point behind was Mike Narodzonek, another four points back was Mike Osada in third. Sonny Menzel won the other CP. Steve Blotzer and Matt Hurst won the LD’s. Larry Campbell and Mike Cook tied for the low gross Club Championship. Larry Campbell took over both the points lead for the year and the scoring average lead from Sonny Menzel. Dave Pearce shot a gross 38 on the front nine. Mike Cook shot a gross 39 on the front overcoming a triple bogey 6 on the par 3 third hole. In first round pyramid play it was Dave Pearce over Debbie Menzel. Some major changes took place in the golf club rankings, Rick Simonson with his win took over the # 1 spot, Ken Dorsey who reached his minimum tournaments played came into the rankings at the # 2 spot, Rob Yarbrough who didn’t play dropped from # 1 to # 3, Debbie Menzel dropped to # 4 with Kevin Peck just holding on to the # 5 position.
2006 – Our first major championship of the year was played at the first time venue of Deer Ridge C.C. on Saturday, April 29th starting at 9am. The playing conditions were good, temperature in the high sixties and low seventies with no wind to start with, some wind came up half way through the front nine. Jerry Crumrine after shooting a net 62 gathered 44 points and won the second flight and the Club Championship, his second win in a row and his first major championship. Finishing in second place in the second flight was Mike Osada with 38 points. Sheldon Custer took third place with 37 points. The first flight winners were Matt Hurst and Kevin Peck who tied with 38 points. Finishing second three points behind was Denzil Storbeck, another four points back was Dave Pearce and Don Scribner who tied for third. Matt Hurst and Kevin Peck tied for the low gross Club Championship. Don Scribner and Nemon Williamson won the CP’s. Dave Pearce and Matt Hurst won the LD’s. Jerry Crumrine took over both the points lead for the year and the scoring average lead from Bob Simonson. The greens were hard but if you could get close enough you could make some birdies. John Ortiz, Kevin Peck and Nemon Williamson had two birdies apiece. Michael Katz also had a birdie. Shot of the day went to Nemon Williamson who hit a 3 wood to within 12 feet on the tough 207 yard par 3 fifteenth hole (CP) and then made the putt for a birdie. Some changes took place in the golf club rankings, Dave Pearce increased his lead in the # 1 spot, Mike Cook moved into the # 2 spot as Neal Stachowicz dropped out of the rankings. Jim Spurgeon who didn’t play took over the # 3 position. Kevin Peck with his win moved into the # 4 spot. Mike Osada just barely inched out Debbie Menzel for the # 5 position.
2007 – Our first major championship of the year was played at Rio Vista GC on Saturday, August 4th starting at 9am. When we got to the course we thought we were going to play Rio Vista without the wind as it was calm, that all ended on the first tee as the wind came up and blew pretty hard on the front nine, it dropped off on the back nine with the temperature at about 100 degrees as we finished play. Sonny Menzel after shooting a net 63 gathered 46 points and won the second flight and the Club Championship, his second as he also won it in 2001. Finishing in second place in the second flight was Bob Simonson with 33 points. Glenn Campbell took third place with 31 points. The first flight winner was Nemon Williamson with 40 points. Finishing second three points behind was Larry Campbell, another one point back was Mike Cook and Neal Stachowicz who tied for third. The third flight was won by Sandie Cook with 41 points. Jerry Crumrine was 6 points back in second place. Mike Narodzonek and Mike Osada tied for third place with 32 points. Nemon Williamson won the low gross Club Championship. Bob Brown and Jerry Crumrine (both their first CP’s) won the CP’s. Steve Page won both the LD’s to bring his total to 4 for the year. Larry Campbell took over the points lead for the year, Glenn Campbell held on to the scoring average lead. The greens were quite a bit slower than the practice green but birdies were made, Nemon Williamson led the way with 3, Dave Pearce had 2, Larry Campbell, Mike Cook, Sandie Cook, Sonny Menzel, Steve Page and Denzil Storbeck had one a piece. Nemon Williamson shot a gross 37 on the back nine, both Larry Campbell and Sonny Menzel had gross 39’s on the same nine. Some changes took place in the golf club rankings, the absent Chris Kelly reclaimed the # 1 spot, Michael Katz slipped to the # 2 spot, Sandie Cook moved from # 6 to the # 3 spot, Nemon Williamson moved up from # 10 to the # 4 spot with Dave Pearce at the # 5 position. There was lots of movement in the Rankings due to the high ranking points available for the Club Champiionship. In first round Pyramid play it was John Ortiz over Joe Bateman, Debbie Menzel over Mike Osada by forfeit and Steve Blotzer over Todd Lopez by forfeit. In Second play it was Michael Katz over Debbie Menzel, Don Scribner over Steve Blotzer, Nemon Williamson over Bob Bohnet and Neal Stachowicz over Matt Hurst.
2008 – Our first major championship of the year was played at Eagle Vines GC on Saturday, June 28th starting at 9am. The weather was cool with a strong coastal influnence the entire day. Jerry Crumrine survived a triple bogey (- 2 points) on the 18th hole, gathered 36 points and won the second flight and the Club Championship. This was his second as he also won it in 2006. Finishing in second place in the second flight was Ken Dorsey with 31 points. Rick Morgan took third place with 29 points. The first flight winner and finishing runner-up in the Club Championship was Don Scribner with 35 points. Finishing second in the first flight only one point behind was Bob Simonson, another two points back was Mike Cook and Nemon Williamson who tied for third. Nemon Williamson won the low gross Club Championship. Steve Blotzer and Nemon Williamson (Nemon’s 20th CP) won the CP’s. Randy Butler (his first) and Dave Pearce won the LD’s. Jerry Crumrine took over the points lead for the year and tied with Denzil Storbeck for the scoring average lead. The greens were very fast and combined with difficult pin placements made for some tough putting. Out of the 22 player field only 2 birdies were made, Dave Pearce and Don Scribner both made a birdie on the 7th hole. Some changes took place in the golf club rankings, Bob Simonson held his # 1 spot over Jerry Crumrine who moved up to the # 2 spot, Nemon Williamson slipped to the # 3 spot, Neal Stachowicz held his # 4 spot with Don Scribner moving up to the # 5 position. In first round Pyramid play it was Ken Dorsey over Mike Cook, Nemon Williamson over Dave Pearce, Debbie Menzel over Matt Hurst and Sheldon Custer over Rob Yarbrough (@ Green Valley CC).
2009 – Our first major championship of the year was played at Rooster Run GC on Saturday, June 20th starting at 11am. The temperature was in the low 70’s and the prevailing wind made for some difficulties as it blew across each upwind and downwind hole. This Club Championship tournament was extremely competitive in both flights. Michael Katz finished par, birdie, par gathering 42 points to win the first flight and the Club Championship. This was his first major tournament win. Finishing in second place in the first flight was Randy Butler with 41 points. He also had a strong finish, par, par, par, birdie but came up one point short. Nemon Williamson took third place with 40 points. The second flight winner was the defending champion Jerry Crumrine with 40 points. Finishing tied for second in the second flight only one point behind were Glenn Campbell and AJ Jones. Another one points back was Sonny Menzel who took third place. Randy Butler won the low gross Club Championship. Randy also broke Mike Cook’s low gross course record shooting a 78. Kevin Peck shot a 38 on the front nine, Dave Pearce had a 39. On the back nine Mike Cook and Nemon Williamson had 38’s, Michael Katz a 39. Mike Cook (Mike’s 55th CP) and Floyd Duggins won the CP’s. Bob Boyer (his first) with a 311 yard into the wind drive and Debbie Menzel won the LD’s. Debbie hit a 241 yard drive from her tees to ace out Matt Hurst with a 298 yard drive. Jerry Crumrine and Nemon Williamson took over the points lead for the year. Brittany Hurst took over the scoring average lead. The greens were difficult to read but the field came through again with 12 birdies. Nemon Williamson led the way with 3, Randy Butler had 2. Other birdie shooters were Glenn Campbell, Mike Cook, Michael Katz, Debbie Menzel, Mike Osada, Dave Pearce and Kevin Peck. Some changes took place in the golf club rankings, Jerry Crumrine with his win took over # 1 spot, Nemon Williamson moved up to the # 2 spot, Debbie Menzel held at # 3, Kevin Peck slipped to # 4, with Mike Osada holding his # 5 position. In first round Pyramid play it was Steve Blotzer over Nemon Williamson by forfeit.(Nemon had upcoming spinal surgery).
2010 – Our first major championship of the year was played at Franklin Canyon GC on Saturday, July 10th starting at 8am. It was a cool start, the temperature was in the mid 50’s, the prevailing wind came up early but was never a major factor. Randy Butler after finishing second by one point in last year’s Club Championship didn’t take any chances this year shooting a gross 76 (one stroke off the gross course record) and finishing with 43 points to win the first flight and his first major championship. Randy also won the low gross Club Championship. Finishing in a tie for second place was defending champion Michael Katz and Nemon Williamson with 37 points. AJ Jones and Kevin Peck tied for third place with 35 points. The second flight winner and runner-up in the club championship was Sonny Menzel with 40 points. Glenn Campbell took second place with 37 points. Steve Blotzer and Sandie Cook tied for third place with 36 points. Randy Butler and Floyd Duggins won the CP’s. Michael Katz and Randy Butler won the LD’s. Randy Butler took over the points lead for the year. Glen Campbell took over the scoring average lead. The greens were better this year, smoother and a little better speed, the field came through with 9 birdies. Randy Butler and AJ Jones lead the way with 2 each. Other birdie shooters were Steve Blotzer, Floyd Duggins, Brittany Hurst, Don Scribner and Nemon Williamson. Some changes took place in the golf club rankings, Glenn Campbell moved up from # 2 to the # 1 position, Michael Katz slipped from # 1 to # 2, Steve Blotzer held at # 3, Randy Butler entered the rankings in the # 4 spot with Nemon Williamson moving up to the # 5 spot. In first round Pyramid play it was Sonny Menzel over Neal Stachowicz, Glenn Campbell over Matt Hurst, Dave Pearce over Casey Walker, Steve Blotzer over Don Scribner, Kevin Peck over Floyd Duggins and Nemon Williamson over AJ Jones.
2011 – Winter would not go away, it rained midweek before the tournament but we ended up playing on a beautiful day, warm to start with but a slight cool breeze came up on the back nine, temperature in the low 90’s at the end of play. The date was July 2nd starting at 9am, the course was Foxtail – South for our first major championship of the year, the 16th Club Championship. To say it was a close finish would be a understatement, Mike Cook and Nemon tied for 1st place in the 1st flight, Brittany Hurst took 1st in the second flight, all three players had 44 points. Using the # 1 handicap hole to break the tie, Mike Cook won the Club Championship, Nemon second and Brittany third. Mike tied his father Boyd as the oldest player to win a major at age 69. Mike also achieved the “Yarbie Slam”, winning all 4 career majors. Don Scribner won second place in the first flight, Matt Hurst took third. In the second flight Jerry Crumrine took second, Sandie Cook won third place. Nemon Williamson won the low gross Club Championship breaking his own (shared with Mike Cook) course record with a gross 77, Mike Cook was second with a 78. Glenn Campbell (his first) and Brittany Hurst won the CP’s. Michael Katz (his 20th) and Brittany Hurst won the LD’s. Matt Hurst maintained the points lead for the year. Brittany Hurst took over the scoring average lead. Matt Hurst shot a 39 on the front nine, Mike Cook had a 37, Nemon Williamson a 38 matched by a 39 on the back nine. The back nine is where most of the players had problems, only 2 players in the field shot better on the back, Randy Butler and Floyd Duggins. Randy Butler, Mike Cook and Nemon Williamson each had 3 birdies apiece, Glenn Campbell and Bob Simonson had one each. Some major changes took place in the golf club rankings, Kevin Peck dropped out, Jerry Crumrine went from 6th to 1st, Nemon Williamson went from 10th to 2nd, Floyd Duggins went from 4th to 3rd, Mike Cook went from 11th to 4th, Steve Blotzer slipped from 2nd to 5th. In first round Pyramid play it was Brittany Hurst over Don Scribner, Mike Cook over Jerry Crumrine and Nemon Williamson over Debbie Menzel. In second round play it was Sonny Menzel over Bob Boyer.
2012 – We had a large turnout for the playing of the 17th Club Championship at Boundary Oak GC, our first 3 flight tournament in three years. It was held June 30th starting at 8:00 am, the weather was nice, temperature in the low 80’s at the end of play with a mild westerly wind blowing the entire round. Mike Osada who at the start of the season had been designated the best player without a major tournament win took care of that in short order by winning the third flight and Club Championship with 45 points. Finishing 2nd in the third flight and 2nd in the Club Championship was Debbie Menzel with 41 pts. Bob Simonson finished 3rd in the Championship with 39 pts. The first flight was won by Michael Katz (5th career win) with 36 pts, Gary Beckman and defending club champion Mike Cook tied for second with 34 pts. Randy Butler took 3rd with 32 pts. In the second flight it was Ken Dorsey (2nd win in a row) and Rob Yarbrough tying for 1st place with 38 pts, Kevin Peck second with 36 pts, Glenn Campbell was third with 34 pts. Gary Beckman won the low gross Club Championship with a gross 83, Randy Butler, Mike Cook and Michael Katz were second with 85’s. Bob Simonson and Matt Hurst won the CP’s. Brittany Hurst won both the LD’s. Kevin Peck took over the points lead for the year. Brittany Hurst and Rob Yarbrough joined Ken Dorsey for the scoring average lead. Randy Butler shot a gross 39 on the front nine, Gary Beckman a 39 on the back nine. Mike Osada had a gross 86, net 63, Debbie Menzel a gross 89, net 67. The greens were in good shape and fast. Gary Beckman had 2 birdies, other birdie shooters were Randy Butler, Glenn Campbell, Larry Campbell, Ken Dorsey, Brittany Hurst, Kevin Peck, Don Scribner, Bob Simonson and Rob Yarbrough. Some changes took place in the golf club rankings, Mike Cook returned to # 1, Nemon Williamson slipped to # 2, Kevin Peck entered the rankings at # 3, Sonny Menzel moved down to # 4 with Brittany Hurst at # 5. In first round Pyramid play it was Jerry Crumrine over Don Scribner, Sonny Menzel over Todd Yarbrough, Matt Hurst over AJ Jones, Debbie Menzel over Randy Butler and @ Rancho Solano it was Kevin Peck over Brittany Hurst.
2013 – We had a very good turnout for the playing of the 18th Club Championship at Cypress Lakes GC, like last year another 3 flight tournament It was held June 8th starting at 10:00 am. The weather was a key, the temperature at the end of play was 106 degrees with a fairly strong North wind blowing, it was very hot, some players could not complete 18 holes of play. Home course favorite Nemon Williamson (his 4th win there and 35th career win) won his 1st Club Championship with 37 points, Randy Butler was second with 35 points, in third was the trio of Kevin Peck, Neal Stachowicz and Sandie Cook with 33 points. The first flight was won by Nemon Williamson with 37 pts, second was Randy Butler with 35 pts, third was Matt Hurst with 32 points. In the second flight it was Kevin Peck (went over 250 career points) and Neal Stachowicz (15th career win) tied for first place with 33 points, second was Sonny Menzel with 31 points and tying for third place with 28 points were Steve Blotzer and Ken Dorsey. The third flight was won by Sandie Cook with 33 points (after an extended win drought), second was Bob Boyer with 30 points, third was Debbie Menzel with 29 points. Randy Butler won the low gross Club Championship with a gross 83, Nemon Williamson was second with a 84. With his CC win Nemon became the third player to achieve the career grand slam (the Yarbie Slam) Ken Dorsey (his 5th) and Steve Blotzer (his 10th) won the CP’s. Matt Hurst won both the LD’s. Nemon Williamson extended his points lead for the year. Bob Simonson maintained the scoring average lead. Nemon Williamson shot a gross 38 on the front nine. Sandie Cook was the only player in the field to shoot a net par or better round. The greens were in good shape but a little slow. Some fun stat updates from the last tournament at Paradise Valley, Fred Longoria became the 100th different golfer to make a birdie with the club and also happened to make the 1600th birdie since 1979. Some changes took place in the golf club rankings, Kevin Peck broke Michael Katz’s record from 2010 for the highest ranking and remained at # 1, Mike Cook held at # 2, Nemon Williamson with his win moved up from # 5 to the # 3 spot, Sonny Menzel slipped from 3rd to 4th, Debbie Menzel slipped fropm 4th to 5th. In early Player of the Year standings it’s Kevin Peck @ #1, Sandie Cook @ # 2, Randy Butler @ # 3, Matt Hurst @ # 4 with Bob Simonson @ 5. In first round Pyramid play it was Debbie Menzel over Bob Brown, Kevin Peck over Michael Katz, Randy Butler over Rob Yarbrough, and Alex Tegenkamp over Bob Simonson by forfeit. Bob Boyer and Sonny Menzel tied their 1st round match.
2014 – It was a beautiful day for golf, temperature in the mid 80’s with a mild west wind towards the end of play. This was the setting for the playing of the 19th Club Championship held at Foxtail – South GC, June 28th starting at 09:36 am. Alex Tegenkamp looking for his first tournament win decided why not win the Club Championship and he did tie with Steve Blotzer to win the second flight with 43 pts but lost the tie breaker to Steve for the CC. Steve won his third major championship. In the CC Randy Butler was third with 42 pts., Nemon Williamson fourth with 41 pts. In the second flight Floyd Duggins and Bob Simonson tied for second with 40 pts, Sandie Cook took third with 39 pts. In the first flight it was Randy Butler taking first with 42 pts, Nemon Williamson second with 41 pts and Mike Cook third with 33 pts. Randy Butler won the low gross Club Championship for the second year in a row with a gross 77, Nemon Williamson was second with a 80. Mike Cook and Rob Villarreal won the CP’s. Rob Villarreal and Kevin Peck won the LD’s. Randy Butler joined Brittany Hurst for the points lead for the year. Brittany Hurst maintained the scoring average lead. Nemon Williamson shot a gross 38 on the front nine, Randy Butler a gross 37 on the same nine. Randy tied Nemon’s low gross course record of 77. Alex Tegenkamp tied Jim Grant’s and Don Scribner’s low net course record of 9 under par. Matt Hurst and John Perrin were the only players to improve their scores on the tougher back nine. The course was in good shape, the fairways a little rough but playable, the greens were in very good shape and fast. Nemon Williamson had 3 birdies, Randy Butler had 2, other birdie shooters were Steve Blotzer, Mike Cook, Matt Hurst, Bob Simonson and Alex Tegenkamp. There was no play in first round of the pyramid, all the first round matches need to be played through the Paradise Valley tournament.
2015 – It was a perfect day for golf, temperature in the mid 80’s at the end of play with essentially no wind the entire round. This was the setting for the playing of the 20th Club Championship held at Rancho Solano GC, Friday, July 24th starting at 09:00 am. Rob Yarbrough won his second Club Championship and 6th major winning the second flight with 41 pts. In the Club Championship Randy Butler was second with 39 pts., Mike Cook 3rd with 38 pts. In the second flight it was Rob first with 41 pts, Floyd Duggins second with 33 pts and Don Scribner third with 32 pts. In the first flight it was Randy Butler taking first with 39 pts, Mike Cook second with 38 pts and Matt Hurst third with 36 pts. Randy Butler won the low gross Club Championship for the third year in a row with a gross 80, Mike Cook and Matt Hurst were second with 85’s. Mike Cook and Neal Stachowicz (his 10th) won the CP’s. Alex Tegenkamp and Randy Butler won the LD’s. Rob Yarbrough took over the points lead for the year and also maintained the scoring average lead. The course was in good shape, the greens were in very good shape and fast, the pin placements were however very difficult leading to many 3 and more putts. There were only 3 birdies for the field, Mike Cook, Bob Simonson and Rob Yarbrough had one each. In a first round pyramid play rematch it was # 12 ranked Mike Cook over # 4 ranked Kevin Peck earlier at Rancho and in a second round match it was # 3 ranked Randy Butler over # 8 ranked Alex Tegenkamp. In the rankings Randy Butler takes over the # 1 ranking, Bob Boyer slips to # 2, Rob Villarreal moves up from # 6 to # 3, Floyd Duggins moves up to # 4 with Nemon Williamson slipping to # 5. In the race for player of the year it’s Alex Tegenkamp, Mike Cook and Matt Hurst, Rob Yarbrough, Randy Butler and Nemon Williamson.
2016 – No Tournament
2017 – After a years absence the 21st Club Championship was held at Hiddenbrooke GC on Tuesday, June 20th starting at 10:00 am. The date of the tournament fell between two heat waves so the temperature only got to the low 90’s during play but the gusty wind blew pretty hard on certain holes. It was directly in your face on the uphill par 5 second hole making that tough hole harder than ever. A lot of players did not make the tournament due to injuries and illnesses. The greens were slower than normal but the course still played very hard, lots of lost balls. Mike Cook after a very bad start came through on the back nine to capture his second Club Championship and also the low gross CC. He had a low 34 points, finishing second with 30 points was Floyd Duggins. Third place went to Alex Tegenkamp with 27 points. The closest to the pins went to Mike Cook and Dave Pearce (his 35th), the long drives (in the fairway cut) went to Mike Cook and Floyd Duggins (his 1st). Don Scribner maintained his # 1 ranking, with his win Mike Cook moved up to tie Matt Hurst at # 2, Floyd Duggins moved up to # 3, Steve Blotzer is at # 4 with Randy Butler at # 5. 2018 – The 22nd Club Championship was held at Rancho Solano GC on Friday, June 13th starting at 10:10 am. The weather was hot and humid, monsoon clouds from the south had settled in and made for a very hot and sticky day. Alex Tegenkamp played well and captured his first Club Championship and third major with 38 pts., second was Mike Cook with 36 pts., third went to Dave Pearce with 35 pts. Mike Cook won the low gross CC followed by Nemon Williamson in second and Dave Pearce in third. In the 1st flight it was Mike Cook 1st, Dave Pearce 2nd and Nemom Williamson 3rd. In the second flight it was Alex Tegenkamp 1st, Floyd Duggins 2nd and Bob Simonson 3rd. The closest to the pins went to Mike Cook (his 70th) and Sandie Cook (her 25th), the long drives went to Steve Blotzer and Alex Tegenkamp. Dave Pearce and Floyd Duggins both qualified for the Winners Tournament. Mike Cook took the # 1 ranking and with his win Alex Tegenkamp moved up to # 2, Neal Stachowicz slipped to # 3, Nemon Williamson is at # 4 with Steve Blotzer at # 5. Thanks to Nemom Williamson for setting up the tournament and also supplying a dozen PV-1’s for the CP & LD prizes. The greens looked slow but would fool you, lots of 3 putts. Only 2 birdies for the field, Don Scribner and Nemon Williamson each had one. In first round pyramid play at Diablo Creek GC it was Steve Blotzer over Don Scribner. In the Player of the Year standings it is Mike Cook, then Eddie Pereira, Neal Stachowicz, Nemon Williamson & Sandie Cook.
2019 – The 23rd Club Championship was held at Wildhorse GC on Tuesday, August 6th starting at 10:12 am. The weather was hot (97 deg and humid) and no wind but it didn’t stop the hottest player this year Floyd Duggins who won his third consecutive tournament (ties a runner-up record) and his first Club Championship. This was his 2nd major win with a third possible depending on the outcome of the Valero Cup playoff with Neal Stachowicz. Floyd won first with 37 pts., second was Dave Pearce and Alex Tegenkamp with 36 pts each, third went to Nemon Williamson with 35 pts. Nemon also won the low gross CC followed by Mike Cook and Dave Pearce in second. The closest to the pins went to Sandie Cook and Mike Cook, the long drives went to Nemon Williamson and Sandie Cook. Dave Pearce qualified for the Winners Tournament. In the Rankings Neal Stachowicz barely held on to # 1, Floyd Duggins moved higher in # 2, Eddie Pereira held at # 3, Mike Cook Held at # 4 with Alex Tegenkamp moving uo to # 5. In Player of the Year it’s Floyd Duggins, Mike Cook, Neal Stachowicz, Dave Pearce and Sandie Cook.Thanks to Nemon Williamson for setting up the tournament for us. We did manage 4 birdies, two apiece for Mike Cook and Alex Tegenkamp. In first round pyramid play (at Paradise Valley GC) it was Sandie Cook over Dave Pearce and Mike Cook over defending champion Steve Blotzer.
2020 – 2023 – No Tournament
