1980 Highlights

April 12th was the date of the first tournament of the year held at Chimney Rock G.C., the last tournament on the old course. Boyd Cook won the first flight for the second year in a row. Tom Palilonis was second with Dave Pearce third. The second flight was won by Don Dean with Mike Pajarillo and Ron Kempka taking second and third place. Tom Palilonis won both a CP and a LD. Dan Tiburcio won the other CP with Robert Weatherford winning the LD. Boyd Cook and Don Dean tied for the points lead to start the year off. Don also took the scoring average lead.

     Our inaugural Best-Ball tournament was held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on May 10th. The team of Boyd and Mike Cook won the first flight. Finishing second was the Scotty Coffin, Jay Jordan team and third the Clar Reyes, Robert Weatherford team. The second flight was won by the team of John Ortiz, Darwin Richey, second was the Gary Beckman, Jim Spurgeon team, third the teams of Jim Grant, D. Tiburcio and Don Dean, Mike Pajarillo. Mike Cook won both a CP and the LD. Clar Reyes won the other CP, with Darwin Richey winning the other LD. Boyd Cook took over the points lead, Jim Spurgeon the scoring average lead.

     Green Tree G.C. was the site of our next tournament on June 7th. The first flight was won by Dave Pearce, finishing second was Mike Cook and Clar Reyes. Third place went to Denzil Storbeck and Robert Weatherford. Don Dean took first place in the second flight. Mike Pajarillo and Andy Marquez took second and third. Robert Weatherford won both a CP and a LD. The other CP went to Floyd Duggins and the LD to Dave Pearce. Don Dean took over the points lead with Boyd Cook taking over the scoring average lead for the year.

     On July 12th at noon we teed off at Diablo Creek G.C. for our fourth tournament. Dave Pearce, Scotty Coffin and Denzil Storbeck took first, second and third place in the first flight. Winning the second flight was Don Dean, followed in second by Tom Stead and third by Mike Pajarillo. Denzil Storbeck and Harold Juris won the CP’s. Mike Cook and Tom Palilonis took the LD’s. Don Dean increased his points lead and also took over the scoring average lead.

     The next tournament was held at Franklin Canyon G.C. on August 9th. Winning the first flight was Denzil Storbeck with Mike Cook second and Scotty Coffin third. Roger Staha won the second flight with Marv Smith second and Don Dean and Mike Pajarillo tied for third. Roger Staha and Bob Simonson won the CP’s. Mike Cook won both LD’s. Don Dean increased his points lead but lost the scoring average lead to Darwin Richey.

     The last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament was held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on August 30th. Taking advantage and qualifying were Don Scribner and Jim Spurgeon who won their flights. Also Bob Simonson qualified by finishing runner-up in the second flight. Boyd Cook and Mike Cook took second and third place in the first flight. Mike Pajarillo and Tom Stead took third in the second flight. Dan Tiburcio and Mike Cook won the CP’s. Tom Palilonis and John Parker won the LD’s. Don Dean maintained his points lead and regained the scoring average lead for the year. 

     Our 10th annual Winners Tournament which was held at Kennedy G.C. on September 27th was won by Boyd Cook with a fine net 66. Scotty Coffin and Darwin Richey tied for second with net 71’s. Mike Cook and Denzil Storbeck tied for third with net 72’s. Mike Cook won the CP, Dave Pearce won both LD’s. 

    We had our best turnout ever for the Pyramid Tournament. 26 players started the tournament. Tom Stead defeated Ron Kempka by one stroke on the 18th hole at Diablo Creek G.C. to win the tournament and first place money, $50.00. Low net money went to; Jim Spurgeon $2.00, Roger Staha $4.00, Denzil Storbeck $7.00, Ron Kempka $8.00 and Mike Cook $11.00.

     Don Dean after building up a early season lead, held on to win the Points Championship for the year with 27 points. Boyd Cook was runner up with 24 points, Mike Cook third with 23.

     Boyd Cook over took Don Dean and won the Scoring Championship for the year with an average score of 69.67. Dave Pearce was runner-up with a fine 70.60 average, Denzil Storbeck third at 71.43.
