As it was the last couple of years we didn’t have a tournament director but it didn’t really matter, COVID-19 ruined almost the entire season. We did manage to get Nemon Williamson’s farewell Tournament in early in the year and a lone Hiddenbrooke Tournament.
The Nemon Williamson Farewell Tournament was held at Paradise Valley GC on Thursday, February 27th starting at 10:03 am. For late February the weather was beautiful, temperature at 80 degrees at the end of play with a very unusual northeast wind on the second nine. The turnout was great, 13 players from the golf club, four more from the refinery plus an a additional three from Nemon’s SIR’s group golfers. Other players stopped by to say farewell, Larry Campbell, Sue Gustofson and Rob Yarbrough plus e-mails from others. The greens had just been aerated but putted pretty well with a light coating of sand on them. Play started on the back nine. Nemon Williamson decided that if he was leaving he’d go out with a bang. He took first place (his 39th), won a CP (his 30th) and a LD plus one birdie. Finishing in second place was Dave Pearce, Randy Butler took third place. In the second flight it was Sandie Cook and Alex Tegenkamp tying for first place, Floyd Duggins took second and Steve Blotzer third. Nemon Williamson and Fred Longoria won the CP’s, Nemon and Randy Butler won the LD’s. There were six birdies for the field, Fred Longoria led the way with two, Floyd Duggins, Alex Tegenkamp, Ed Vegas and Nemon Williamson had one apiece. Fred Longoria had the round of the day shooting an excellent gross 75. Mike Cook presented Nemon with a framed document listing all of his career stats from 1993 until 2019. The rankings were changed a bit, the idle Neal Stachowicz took over the # 1 position, Floyd Duggins slipped to # 2.
The Tom Stead Scramble sponsored by Mike and Sandie Cook was not played this year but a contribution for the American Heart Association in Tom’s name was made putting us over the $9000.00 mark, total to date is $9124.00.
The sixth Kamp-Devlin Classic sponsored by Vickie Devlin and Alex Tegenkamp was held at the Hiddenbrooke GC on Saturday, August 8th but because of COVID-19 the turnout was very small. Vicki Devlin, Dave Pearce and Alex Tegenkamp played with Vicki picking up after the par 5 fifth hole. This left Alex and Dave in a two man shootout for the win. Dave shot an excellent net 64, Alex shot a very good net 69.
The 2018 & 2019 Valero Cup tournaments have not been played yet.
The 24th Club Championship was not held this year.
The “50th” annual Winners Tournament sponsored by Mike and Sandie Cook was not held this year.
The 43rd Pyramid Tournament is still in progress. Mike Cook, Sandie Cook & Neal Stachowicz all won first round matches, Neal went on to win his second round match over Sandie Cook. Still needing to play in the first round is Matt Hurst vs Eddie Pereira.
The modified ranking system from 2019 having been modified to be more current was continued in 2020 which put Neal Stachowicz at # 1 to start the year off. Neal held # 1 through the Paradise Valley tournament. Floyd Duggins took # 1 after Hiddenbrooke and held it ending the year at # 1.
There was no Valero Golf Club’s Player of the Year for 2020.
