As it was the last couple of years we didn’t have a tournament director so four players helped us out by setting up tournaments for us to play. Our thanks go out to Sandie Cook, Alex Tegenkamp, Ed Vegas and Nemon Williamson who set up six tournaments for the year. Eight players showed an interest so we also had a Pyramid Tournament, with matches being played at what ever course they wanted.
The Tom Stead Scramble with the two person scramble format and low net scores used this year was sponsored by Mike and Sandie Cook and held at Rio Vista GC on Saturday, May 11th starting at 10:00 am. We played on an absolutely beautiful day, temperature in the high 70’s with essentially no wind. Play was from the up front green tees. The greens had been recently aerated and very slow to say the least. In the first flight it was Steve Blotzer and Don Scribner teaming up to win first place with a net score of 61 (3 birdies). Home course favorite Ed Vegas teamed up with Al Thacker to tie for first place with a net 61 (6 birdies), this was Ed’s second win in a row at Rio. Mike Cook and Nemon Williamson finished in second place with a net 64 (3 birdies). The Vicki Devlin, Alex Tegenkamp team also took second place with a net 64 (1 birdie). The Mike Osada, Dave Pearce team took third place with a net 65( 1 birdie). Golf Club guests and Rio Vista regulars Bob Delbo and Stan Lacey shot a 67, net 62 (5 birdies), Stan also won a CP on the 15th hole., Al Thacker also had a CP on the 8th hole. The Valero Golf Club’s closest to the pins on the front nine were won by Don Scribner and Dave Pearce, on the back nine it was Mike Osada (his 5th) and no one on # 15, each received a sleeve of the new Callaway Tour Soft golf balls. The first place team members split $50.00, second place $20.00, third place $10.00. The shot of the day went to Dave Pearce who rattled the pin on the 18th hole, his ball then landed about 4 feet pin high, he made the putt for a team birdie. Our thanks go out to Ed Vegas for setting up the tournament and some of the winning team members who gave back their prize money and added it to our donation, we raised $190.00 for the American Heart Association in Tom’s name, total to date is $8934.00.
The fifth Kamp-Devlin Classic sponsored by Vickie Devlin and Alex Tegenkamp was held at the Eagle Vines GC on Thursday, June 13th starting at 10:03 am. After just missing a record heat wave the weather was in the mid 70’s but with a strong prevailing wind the entire day. No one hit the green on the par 3 fifth hole and the field averaged a double bogey 7 on the par 5 sixth, both playing into the wind. It was Floyd Duggins ($75.00) who came through to capture first place with a net 77. Sandie Cook and Eddie Pereira (both $13.00) were close behind taking second place with net 78’s. Steve Blotzer took third with a 79. The LD’s were won by Eddie Pereira and Neal Stachowicz, both winning $20.00. No one hit the CP par 3 fifth hole, Sandie Cook won the CP on the par 3 fourteenth hole that had an impossible back left pin placement. She won a dozen Callaway Tour Soft golf balls. The greens on the course were better this year but after going two years with no birdies for the field Alex Tegenkamp came through with one on the par 4 third hole. The pace of play was great this year. Our thanks go out to Vickie and Alex for setting up and sponsoring the tournament. A special presentation was made to Steve Blotzer, last years Pyramid winner who due to a problem with the trophy engraver is and will be the only winner ever of the Tom Snead Trophy The rankings were changed a bit, the ailing Mike Cook took over the # 1 position, Neal Stachowicz is at # 2, Eddie Pereira # 3, Floyd Duggins enters at # 4, with Steve Blotzer at # 5.
The 2017 Valero Cup was played at Rancho Solano GC on Tuesday July 23 rd, 2019 starting at 10:04 am. The eight top point players from 2017 played minus Steve Blotzer, Don Scribner and Eddie Pereira who were eligible but couldn’t play. The playing conditions were okay, very warm, temperature in the low 90’s, the prevailing wind did come up on the back nine. Many tricky pins, a wet course and slow greens added up to no birdies for the field. Floyd Duggins and Neal Stachowicz tied for first place, they were both vying for their first Valero Cup win. The tie required an 18 hole playoff which was held Sept. 9th at Rancho Solano GC with Neal Stachowicz winning over Floyd Duggins by one stroke. Alex Tegenkamp took 2nd place with a net 73, Dave Pearce took 3rd place with net 75. The CP’s went to Nemon Wiilliamson, Dave Pearce and Alex Tegenkamp good for a sleeve of Callaway true soft golf balls. Floyd and Neal split the $70.00 winner takes all prize money. Other players included Sandie Cook and Mike Cook. In first round Pyramid play it was Neal Stachowicz over Nemon Williamson. In the Rankings Neal Stachowicz moves up to # 1, Floyd Duggins up to # 2, Eddie Pereira holds at # 3, Mike Cook drops to # 4 with Steve Blotzer holding at # 5. Player of the Year so far, Stachowicz, Pearce, Duggins, Pereira, Sandie Cook
The 23rd Club Championship was held at Wildhorse GC on Tuesday, August 6th starting at 10:12 am. The weather was hot (97 deg and humid) and no wind but it didn’t stop the hottest player this year Floyd Duggins who won his third consecutive tournament (ties a runner-up record) and his first Club Championship. This was his 2nd major win with a third possible depending on the outcome of the Valero Cup playoff with Neal Stachowicz. Floyd won first with 37 pts., second was Dave Pearce and Alex Tegenkamp with 36 pts each, third went to Nemon Williamson with 35 pts. Nemon also won the low gross CC followed by Mike Cook and Dave Pearce in second. The closest to the pins went to Sandie Cook and Mike Cook, the long drives went to Nemon Williamson and Sandie Cook. Dave Pearce qualified for the Winners Tournament. In the Rankings Neal Stachowicz barely held on to # 1, Floyd Duggins moved higher in # 2, Eddie Pereira held at # 3, Mike Cook Held at # 4 with Alex Tegenkamp moving uo to # 5. In Player of the Year it’s Floyd Duggins, Mike Cook, Neal Stachowicz, Dave Pearce and Sandie Cook. Thanks to Nemon Williamson for setting up the tournament for us. We did manage 4 birdies, two apiece for Mike Cook and Alex Tegenkamp. In first round pyramid play (at Paradise Valley GC) it was Sandie Cook over Dave Pearce and Mike Cook over defending champion Steve Blotzer.
The Hiddenbrooke Tournament was played on Saturday, August 24th starting at 9:48 am. Unlike the last couple of years it was a warm start but with the westerly wind still blowing made the first 4 holes very tough to play. The wind dropped off but only in the valley holes, it still blew on the hillside holes. The temperature at the end of play was in the mid 80’s. Dave Pearce showed up at the course with a brand new set of clubs, usually not a good idea but in this case it was. He won first place with a net 69. Alex Tegenkamp shot a 72, good for second place, guest Herb Forthuber was third with a 77. Mike Cook won the 3rd place points. Alex Tegenkamp and Mike Cook won the closest to the pins, Dave Pearce and Alex Tegenkamp won the long drives. The greens were in good shape, Dave Pearce and Herb Forthuber had one birdie apiece. Chips of the day went to Dave Pearce and Mike Cook, both on the same hole. On the par 5 fifth hole Dave’s third shot was long and right of the green, the pin was clear across the green towards the water, he chipped his shot which seemed like it took forever to get there and holed it out for a birdie (his 80th). Mike left and short of the green did exactly the same thing but he holed out for a par 5. You had to see them to believe it! In the rankings, Floyd Duggins takes # 1, Neal Stachowicz slips to # 2, Dave Pearce moves up to # 3, Alex Tegenkamp up to # 4 with Eddie Pereira slipping to # 5. For player of the year it’s Dave Pearce, Floyd Duggins, Mike Cook, Neal Stachowicz and Sandie Cook. Thanks go out to Alex Tegenkamp for setting up the tournament for us.
The “49th” annual Winners Tournament sponsored by Mike and Sandie Cook was held on a beautiful fall day at Paradise Valley GC on Thursday, October 3rd starting at 11:06 am. The weather was very nice, temperature in the high 70’s and the high winds that were predicted didn’t show, just the normal prevailing wind on the back nine. The pace of play was really good. The greens were in good shape but the fairways were thin and ragged in some areas. No confusion on who was eligible to win the Winners this year, Neal Stachowicz ($100.00) won his second Winners back to back and ninth major after shooting a net 65. Floyd Duggins ($50.00) was a close second with a net 67. Third place went to Sandie Cook with a net 70 ($20.00). No one hit the green on the tough par 3 third hole, Neal Stachowicz won the CP on the 12th hole. Neal Stachowicz and Mike Cook won the LD’s, all those players received a sleeve of Titleist NXT Tour golf balls. Even though the greens were very nice only one birdie for the entire field, Neal Stachowicz had the one. Floyd Duggins after having a great year won both the Points Championship and the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Floyd Duggins maintained his # 1 ranking, Neal Stachowicz with his major win moved up to a very close second, Alex Tegenkamp is at # 3, Dave Pearce very close at # 4 with Eddie Pereira at # 5. For Player of the Year it’s 1-5, Neal Stachowicz, Floyd Duggins, Dave Pearce, Mike Cook and Sandie Cook. In the Pyramid Tournament in second round play it was Neal Stachowicz over Sandie Cook. Our thanks go out to Sandie Cook for arranging and setting up the tournament for us.
The 43rd Pyramid Tournament is still in progress. Mike Cook, Sandie Cook & Neal Stachowicz all won first round matches, still to play in the first round is Matt Hurst & Eddie Pereira. Neal went on to win his second round match over Sandie Cook.
