2010 Highlights

The 40th Valero Golf Club season started out with the playing of the silver anniversary 25th annual Tom Stead memorial scramble at Green Tree G.C. on April 24th starting at 9am. One of Tom’s closest friends, Marv Smith came up from Apache Junction Ariz. to play in the event. El Nino returned again this year, rain a couple of days before and after the tournament but again this year we had absolutely beautiful weather, temperature in the high 70’s with essentially no wind. We had 24 players  sign up and play. The 3 player flight was won by the team of  Matt Hurst, AJ Jones and Kevin Peck with a 67. Finishing in second place one stroke back was the team of  Dave Pearce, Don Scribner and Denzil Storbeck. In third place was the team of  Jerry Crumrine, Floyd Duggins and Bob Simonson with a 72 The 4 player flight was won by the team of Don McFatter, Nemon Williamson, F. Llvata and L. Cuciono with a 62. In second place 3 strokes back was the team of G. Coleman, Pete Gonzales, M. McKee and D. Ramirez. Taking third place was the team of Lori Bateman, Rick Carr, Debbie Menzel and Sonny Menzel with a 70. Recent aeration made putting difficult but the field did make 33 birdies. Mike Cook won the closest to the pin on the front nine, the back nine CP was won by Nemon Williamson. Dave Ramirez and Lori Bateman won the long drives. Mike Cook showed a DVD of Tom Stead playing Green Tree GC in 1984. This year we raised $240.00 in contributions to the American Heart Association in “Tom’s” memory, this brought our total to date to $7336.00. Thanks again for your generous support.

Valero Golf Rankings, to start the year off  Michael Katz held the # 1 spot, Glen Campbell # 2, Bob Boyer # 3, Nemon Williamson # 4 and Steve Blotzer # 5.

The first regular tournament of the year was held at Delta View GC on Saturday, May 15th starting at 10:00 am. The weather was tough to start with, temperature in the fifties with a strong westerly wind blowing across and into the players on the opening holes. Halfway through the front nine the wind decreased but maintained it’s presence the entire round, the temperature at the end of play was 80 degrees. Floyd Duggins was the only player in the field to break net par shooting a net 69 to win first place in the one flight tournament.  Finishing in second place 6 strokes back was Neal Stachowicz. Mike Cook took third place with a net 76. The CP’s were won by Mike Cook and Steve Blotzer. Sandie Cook and Mike Cook won the LD’s. Shot of the day went to Don Scribner, on the downhill par 3 fifteenth hole his tee shot hit way up on the rightside hill, bounded down across the rough, rolled across the green grazing the pin on the way by. We thought we were going to witness a hole in one. Floyd Duggins starts off the year with the points and scoring average leads. The greens were extremely fast and had some very tough pin placements. On the par 5 fifth hole balls putted would go up to the hole, stop and then run back off the green. Nemon williamson’s putt went past the hole and then fell in backwards into it. The field mangaged only 2 birdies, Mike Cook and Neal Stachowicz with one apiece. The Pyramid Tournament names were not drawn in time for play in this tournament.  The Rankings were changed slightly, Michael Katz remains at # 1, Glenn Campbell at # 2, Bob Boyer at # 3, Steve Blotzer moved up to # 4 with Nemon Williamson moving down into the # 5 spot.

The 9th annual Menzel Classic best-ball tournament was held on Saturday, June 12th at Rancho Solano GC starting at 7:50 am. El Nino kept the month of May one of the coldest and wettest ever seen but summer arrived for this tournament, unfortuately the high swirling winds came with it. The north wind blew 20 to 35 mph the entire round with the temperature in the low 90’s at the end of play. Kevin Peck and Rob Yarbrough teamed up to win the first flight with a best-ball score of 68. The team of  Mike Cook and Jerry Crumrine took second place with a net 69.  The team of  Matt Hurst and Nemon Williamson finished in third place with a 70. Randy Butler and Brittany Hurst won the second flight with a 67. Sandie Cook and Don Scribner finished second one stroke back. In third place was our tournament hosts, the team of Debbie Menzel and Sonny Menzel with a 69. The greens were not as fast as expected, had they been the scores would have been much higher then they were. Rob Yarbrough made a natural eagle 3 on the par 5 seventeenth hole for a net double eagle (albatross). Mike Cook and Floyd Duggins missed their eagle putts on the same hole but managed to both make birdies. Other birdie shooters were Randy Butler, Todd Lopez, Sonny Menzel, Kevin Peck and Rob Yarbrough. Net Eagles were made by Randy Butler, Floyd Duggins, Brittany Hurst, Todd Lopez and Kevin Peck. Randy Butler shot a gross 39 on the front nine. The CP’s were won by Bob Simonson and Kevin Peck. The LD’s were  won by Steve Blotzer and Michael Katz. Floyd Duggins maintained the points lead. Brittany Hurst  took over the scoring average lead. Debbie and Sonny not only handed out very nice gift certificate prizes to all the first, second and third place finishers in the first and second flights but also awarded generous cash prizes to the overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers. Brittany was awarded the Barbara Juris Award for being the best lady golfer in 2009. In first round Pyramid play it was Bob Simonson over Jerry Crumrine (in a previous match at Rancho). Michael Katz maintained his # 1 Ranking,  # 2 was Glenn Campbell, Steve Blotzer moved up to the # 3 position, Bob Boyer dropped to # 4 with Brittany Hurst entering the rankings in the # 5 spot.

Our first major championship of the year was played at Franklin Canyon GC on Saturday, July 10th starting at 8am. It was a cool start, the temperature was in the mid 50’s, the prevailing wind came up early but was never a major factor. Randy Butler after finishing second by one point in last year’s Club Championship didn’t take any chances this year shooting a gross 76 (one stroke off the gross course record) and finishing with 43 points to win the first flight and his first major championship. Finishing in a tie for second place was defending champion Michael Katz and Nemon Williamson with 37 points. AJ Jones and Kevin Peck tied for third place with 35 points. The second flight winner and runner-up in the club championship was Sonny Menzel with 40 points. Glenn Campbell took second place with 37 points. Steve Blotzer and Sandie Cook tied for third place with 36 points. Randy Butler and Floyd Duggins won the CP’s. Michael Katz and Randy Butler won the LD’s. Randy Butler took over the points lead for the year. Glen Campbell took over the scoring average lead. The greens were better this year, smoother and a little better speed, the field came through with 9 birdies. Randy Butler and AJ Jones lead the way with 2 each. Other birdie shooters were Steve Blotzer, Floyd Duggins, Brittany Hurst, Don Scribner and Nemon Williamson. Some changes took place in the golf club rankings, Glenn Campbell moved up from # 2 to the # 1 position, Michael Katz slipped from # 1 to # 2, Steve Blotzer held at # 3, Randy Butler entered the rankings in the # 4 spot with Nemon Williamson moving up to the # 5 spot. In first round Pyramid play it was Sonny Menzel over Neal Stachowicz, Glenn Campbell over Matt Hurst, Dave Pearce over Casey Walker, Steve Blotzer over Don Scribner, Kevin Peck over Floyd Duggins and Nemon Williamson over AJ Jones.

Saturday the 31st of  July was the date for the 9th “Boyd Cook Memorial Classic” held  this year at Paradise Valley G.C. starting at 7:56 am. The weather was cool to start with, the normal afternoon prevailing wind was already with us at the start of play, the temperature was in the low eighties at the end of play. Dave Pearce won the first flight and his second Boyd Cook Classic shooting a net 67. Gary Beckman and Michael Katz tied for second place four strokes back. Randy Butler had a net 73 for third place. Floyd Duggins became a first time winner of  the Boyd Cook Classic by winning the second flight with a net 67. Mike Osada took second place with a net 70. Sandie Cook and Brittany Hurst tied for third place with net 73’s. Matt Hurst and Gary Beckman won the CP’s, Michael Katz and Randy Butler won the LD’s. Mike and Sandie Cook gave out gift certificates plus bonus cash prizes to all the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place finishers. Floyd Duggins tied Randy Butler for the points lead for the year. Floyd also took over the scoring average lead for the year. Again this year the course was very wet and the greens were somewhat slower than normal. The field made 9 birdies, Gary Beckman led the way with 3. Other birdie shooters were Mike Cook, Floyd Duggins, Brittany Hurst, Dave Pearce, Don Scribner and Nemon Williamson with one each. Gary Beckman shot a one under par gross 35 on the back nine, Dave Pearce had a gross 39 on the front nine. In first round pyramid play it was Bob Boyer over Debbie Menzel (earlier @ Paradise Valley). In first round pyramid during this tournament it was Randy Butler over Rick Morgan and Sandie Cook tying Brittany Hurst who forfeited the rematch. In second round pyramid play it was Nemon Williamson tying Bob Simonson in a dramatic finish  Bob was leading the match by three strokes going to the 18th hole. Bob made a bogey 5 but Nemon holed out his 175 yard second shot for an eagle two and a tie in the match. The rankings were little changed with Glenn Campbell holding the # 1 position, Michael Katz at the # 2 spot, Steve Blotzer holds the # 3 spot, Randy Butler in the # 4 position with Kevin Peck moving up to the # 5 spot.

The next tournament was played at Rooster Run GC starting at 11:36 am on Saturday, August 21st. Even with the later start time it was very cool and windy to start with, the sun broke through as we finished the front nine but it didn’t warm up much, the temperature at the end of play was only in the mid 60’s. Neal Stachowicz won the first flight after shooting a low gross score of 79, net 64 breaking Bob Simonson’s low net course record by one stroke. Dave Pearce was second with a net 68. Mike Cook and Kevin Peck tied for third place with net 71’s. The second flight was won by Steve Blotzer with a net 66, two strokes back was Debbie Menzel for second place. Neal Stachowicz shot a gross 37 on the front nine, Dave Pearce shot a gross 39 on the back nine. The greens this year were slower than in the past, good for us as any putt pin high and above was in 3 putt territory (one player did mention a 5 putt). The field did come through with 10 birdies. Steve Blotzer, Bob Boyer, Mike Cook, Brittany Hurst, Matt Hurst, Debbie Menzel, Kevin Peck, Bob Simonson, Neal Stachowicz and Nemon Williamson had one apiece. In first round Pyramid play it was Michael Katz over Todd Lopez by forfeit and Mike Cook over Rob Yarbrough (@ Paradise Valley). In second round play at Rooster Run it was Michael Katz over Sonny Menzel, Steve Blotzer over Dave Pearce, Kevin Peck over Sandie Cook, Mike Cook over Bob Boyer and Bob Simonson over Nemon Williamson in their second round rematch. One second round match that is overdue is Randy Butler vs Glenn Campbell. Low net money in the first round goes to Bob Boyer and Brittany Hurst. The Rankings; Glenn Campbell holds the top spot, Steve Blotzer moved up from # 3 to # 2, Michael Katz slipped to # 3, Kevin Peck moved up to # 4, AJ Jones moved up to the # 5 position. Player of the Year top 10 standings; Randy Butler, Steve Blotzer, Michael Katz, Mike Cook, Floyd Duggins, Dave Pearce, Kevin Peck, Brittany Hurst, Debbie Menzel & Sandie Cook tied with Neal Stachowicz.

Our final regular tournament of the year was played on Saturday, September 11th starting at 10:06 am at Bethel Island G.C. It was a warm day but we did have a delta breeze blowing to start with, this wind blows into and across on the opening par 4 first hole with out of bounds left and right. The wind dropped off on the back nine with a temperature of 90 degrees at the end of play. This was the last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament with the last two spots taken by Sandie Cook and Jerry Crumrine. Jerry tied with Sonny Menzel for 1st in the second flight with net 70’s, one stroke back Sandie was second with the trio of Bob Boyer, Floyd Duggins and Bob Simonson tied for third place with net 73’s. Todd Lopez and Gary Beckman won the CP’s, Steve Blotzer and Gary Beckman won the LD’s. Mike Cook shot a gross 39 on the front nine, Gary Beckman had a gross 35 on the back nine. Michael Katz had a gross 39 on the back nine. Floyd Duggins took over the points lead by himself, the absent Brittany Hurst maintained the scoring average lead for the year. Sonny Menzel won at Bethel for the third consecutive time. The greens at Bethel have finally converted back to bermuda, this made even a short putt an adventure. The fairways are also bermuda, adjustments had to be made by the players The field managed to squeak out 8 birdies. Matt Hurst, Michael Katz and Neal Stachowicz led the way with 2 each. Other birdie shooters were Gary Beckman and Bob Boyer. This was the last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament with Sandie and Jerry taking the last qualifying spots and bringing the final total to 18 for the year.      The “40th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the first time at Mare Island G.C. on Saturday, September 25th with a 10:00am start time. The weather conditions were good, warm to start with, a breeze came up in the middle of the round but dropped off again, the temperature approached 100 degrees at the end of play. The greens were ok but inconsistent in speed. A good turnout, fifteen of the eighteen eligible players played plus six ineligible for a total of twenty one. Jerry Crumrine won his first Winners Tournament. Jerry shot a gross 87 net 65. Floyd Duggins took second place with a net 67.Three players tied for 3rd place with net 70’s, Gary Beckman, Sandie Cook and Neal Stachowicz. Floyd Duggins won the Points Championship for the year. In a good competitive year 10 different players had a chance to claim the Points Championship going into the Winners Tournament. Gary Beckman and Rick Morgan took the CP’s. In another very competitive year 11 different players won a CP, Gary Beckman had 3 for the year. The LD’s were  won by Randy Butler and Debbie Menzel. We had 8 different players claim a LD during the year, Michael Katz led the way with 4. Brittany Hurst won the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Birdie shooters were Gary Beckman, Steve Blotzer, Randy Butler, Larry Campbell, Sandie Cook, Jerry Crumrine, Matt Hurst, Michael Katz, (Mike drove the green on the 360 yard downhill par four 13th hole, just missed his eagle putt and tapped in for a birdie), Sonny Menzel, Don Scribner and Nemon Williamson also had birdies. Glenn Campbell maintained first place in the Valero Golf Rankings, Steve Blotzer holds the second spot, Michael Katz kept the # 3 spot, Floyd Duggins moved up to the # 4 spot with Sonny Menzel slipping to the # 5 position.

The 24th Valero Cup tournament was played for the second year in a row at Yocha-De-He G.C. on Saturday, October 9th starting at 8:48 am. The weather was great, temperature in the mid 80’s at the end of play and unlike last year we had essentially no wind at all. The greens were good but not nearly as fast or as smooth as last year. Even without the wind it is still a tough start, a 451 yard par 4 and a tough finish, a 417 yard par 4 eighteenth hole. At the end of the front nine Floyd Duggins led the way with a net 32, Steve Blotzer at  net 35, Randy Butler at net 36 with Sandie Cook, Jerry Crumrine and Neal Stachowicz with net 38’s. As it was last year the tough par 4 eighteenth hole determined the winner. Last year Glenn Campbell holed out from off the 18th green for a double bogey 6 and won by one stroke over Don Scribner. This year Jerry Crumrine took a triple bogey 7 on the 18th but managed to win by one stroke over Floyd Duggins who made a bogey 5 and by 2 strokes over Neal Stachowicz who had a lost ball off the tee but still managed to make a double bogey 6. Jerry won back to back major tournaments and the $80.00 winner takes all Valero Cup prize money. Only two birdies were made, Gary Beckman and Randy Butler had one apiece. Other top eight players included; Gary Beckman, Steve Blotzer, Randy Butler, Sandie Cook and Sonny Menzel (Michael Katz was eligible but didn’t play). Not eligible but played were Mike Cook, Matt Hurst (who shot a gross 39 on the front nine and a net 69) and Dave Pearce. Glenn Campbell  maintained the # 1 ranking, Steve Blotzer at # 2, Randy Butler came back in the rankings at # 3, Michael Katz slipped to # 4, Jerry Crumrine with his win moved up to the # 5 position.

Due to scheduling conflicts the 34th Pyramid Tournament finals were held at Paradise Valley G.C. on Thursday, December 9th at 10:00 am. It rained the night before, the course was extremely wet, standing water in the fairways and the greens were slower than normal. The players teed off in the fog. It turned out mostly cloudy, temperature in the mid 50’s with the sun breaking through on the back nine. The three players in the finals were Mike Cook, Michael Katz and Kevin Peck. Mike Cook had to give one stroke to Michael Katz and two strokes to Kevin Peck. On the par 5 opening hole Peck hit his tee shot right and ended up in the fairway bunker, Katz hit his left into the fairway bunker, Cook hit his tee shot down the middle. Katz hit a good shot out of the bunker but it ended up hitting a tree and he ended up taking a 7 on the hole. Both Cook and Peck 2 putted for bogeys. On the par 4 second hole Cook and Peck both hit their tee shots right center, Katz was left and pretty much blocked out for his second shot. Cook hit the green in two but missed a short birdie putt, Katz was short in the front hazard, chipped out but took a 6 on the hole, Peck was in the greenside bunker, got out but 3 putted for a 6. On the par three 3rd hole both Cook and Peck hit the green, Katz was in the rightside bunker. Cook 3 putted for a 4, Katz came out of the bunker and 2 putted for a 4, Peck 2 putted for a par 3. On the par 5 fourth hole all the players hit good tee shots. Cook mishit his second shot right into the lateral hazard. He found the ball and was able to play it back into the fairway, got on the green in 5 and 3 putted for an 8. Katz also had some problems and ended up taking a 7, Peck was on in 3 and 2 putted for a par 5. On the par 4 fifth hole Peck hit his tee shot left possibly OB, his provisional tee shot was topped just off the front of the tee. Katz hit a long drive but right towards the lake, Cook hit his tee shot right down the left center. Cook found Peck’s tee shot hidden in some weeds, his second shot was short but he got on in 3 but then three putted for a 6. Katz’s tee shot ended up in the mud flats lateral hazard as the lake level was down. He hit an iron out and was pin high in 2 (absolutely the best shot of the day), and he 2 putted for a par. Cook hit his second shot straight at the pin but just short of the green and 2 putted for a par. On the par 4 sixth hole both Cook and Katz hit good tee shots, Peck was left with his, then hit the green in two. Both Cook and Katz hit the right greenside bunker, got out and 2 putted for bogey 5’s. Peck 2 putted for a par 4. On the par 4 seventh hole all three players hit good tee shots, were on in 2 and 2 putted for par 4’s. On the par 3 eighth hole all the players were short of the green, Cook and Peck chipped on and 2 putted for bogey 4’s, Katz’s chip shot was short, he rechipped and one putted for a bogey. On the par 4 ninth hole Peck’s tee shot went left, Katz’s right and Cook’s down the middle and through a large puddle. All the players were on in 2 and 2 putted for par 4’s. At the end of the front nine Peck was up by 3 strokes over Cook and 4 strokes over Katz. Changes would take place on the par 5 tenth hole, Katz’s tee shot went left into the lateral hazard, Cook and Peck both hit the right center of the fairway. Katz dropped and hit back out to the fairway, Peck hit his second shot left into the lateral hazard and dropped out. His next shot hit a tree branch and sent the ball into the ditch that crosses the fairway. Cook hit his second shot just short of the ditch, then hit a pitching wedge pin high. Katz hit his next shot on the green. Peck dropped out of the ditch, hit the green and 2 putted for an 8. Katz would 3 putt for a 7, Cook missed his birdie putt but did make a par 5. On the par 4 eleventh hole  Cook’s tee shot was short of the fairway bunker, Peck went right but OK, Katz hit a very long drive right down the middle. Katz’s second shot was on the green but way above the hole, Cook’s second was just left and short of the green, Peck’s hit the right greenside bunker. Cook chipped on close and made the putt for a par 4, Peck came out of the bunker and 2 putted for a bogey, Katz 3 putted for a bogey 5. On the par 3 twelfth hole Cook and Peck both hit the green, Katz was just left and long, he chipped on and 2 putted for a bogey, Cook and Peck both 2 putted for par 3’s. On the par 4 thirteenth hole all the players managed to make bogey 5’s. On the short par 4 fourteenth hole all the players managed to hit some bad shots and make bogey 5’s. On the par 3 fifteenth hole, Katz hit the green, Cook and Peck both missed the green but chipped on and 3 putted for double bogey 5’s. Katz would 2 putt and make a par 3. When the players reached the par 5 sixteenth hole Cook was up by one stroke over Peck and three strokes over Katz. Katz’s tee shot went right into the lateral hazard, Cook was in the middle but short, Peck was left and long. Katz played his second shot out of the hazard and back in play down the fairway. Cook mishit his second shot ending up right across the lateral hazard, his next shot was advanced down the fairway. Peck hit his second shot, then his third on the green in 3. Katz also hit the green in 3 strokes. Cook hit the green but was on in 4, he missed his par putt and made a bogey 6. Both Katz and Peck 2 putted for par 5’s. Going to the par 4 seventeenth hole Cook and Peck were tied, Katz was 2 strokes back. All the players hit good tee shots, all 3 players were just short of the green. Cook was right below the hole, Katz and Peck off to the right. Peck chipped on and 2 putted for a bogey 5, Katz hit a poor chip and ended up 3 putting for a double bogey 6. Cook chipped up to the hole and tapped in for a par 4. Going to the final hole of the match Cook was up by one stroke over Peck and four over Katz. On the par 4 eighteenth hole Cook hit a good drive right center, Peck went left but OK, Katz hit a very long tee shot left center. Peck mishit his second shot but in the fairway, he then hit his third shot onto the green. Cook hit his second shot left of the green and then had to search quite a while just to find his ball down next to a utility box. His next shot was impossible, the pin being just on the green behind some large mounds. His chip shot was mishit and landed on the mound, he tried to hole it out but it went clear across the green. He then 2 putted for a double bogey 6. Katz 2 putted for a bogey 5. Peck made a 25 foot par putt to win the 34th Pyramid Tournament by one stroke. The pin placements, perhaps because of all the rain and water were set up on crowns, a very difficult day of putting. Kevin Peck will have his name engraved for the first time on the “Tom Stead Trophy” as the winner of the 34th Pyramid Tournament, his second major ($90.00). Finishing second (for the 25th time in a major) was Mike Cook ($46.00). Finishing third was Michael Katz ($28.00). Low net money went to Steve Blotzer ($22.00), Bob Boyer ($18.00), Bob Simonson ($14.00), Dave Pearce ($12.00) and Brittany Hurst ($10.00). After the Pyramid Tournament Kevin Peck took over the # 1 spot in the golf rankings, Glenn Campbell at  # 2, Steve Blotzer at # 3, Michael Katz at # 4 and Randy Butler at the # 5 spot.

The # 1 position in the Valero Golf Club Rankings was held by Michael Katz to start the year off. Michael maintained it through the Delta View and Rancho Solano tournaments. Glenn Campbell took over after Franklin Canyon and held # 1 through the Paradise Valley, Rooster Run, Bethel Island, Mare Island and the Valero Cup tournament at Yocha-De-He. Kevin Peck after finishing first in the Pyramid Tournament at Paradise Valley took over the # 1 position and ended the year as the # 1 ranked golfer.

By finishing 6th in Tournament Points, 7th in the Scoring Average Championship for the year, and 3rd in the Pyramid Tournament, Michael Katz was the Valero Golf Club’s “Player of the Year” for 2010 (his first). Last year he had lost by one point to Glenn Campbell.

2010 was the ninth year for the Valero Golf League. Big changes took place this year as the venue was changed from Blue Rock East to Blue Rock West and play was now held on Wednesday’s instead of Thursday’s. Farm League play was now held on Thursday’s. It was still nine hole team play starting officially at 4:30 pm every Wednesday. The League ran from mid April through September. Steve Duff took over the League President duties from Bob Boyer. The Seadlings started off the year in first place for week # 1, the Rovers took over 1st for weeks 2 – 5, the Seadlings retook first place and held it from week # 6 until the end of the regular season.
