2007 Highlights
The 37th Valero Golf Club season started out with the playing of the traditional 22nd annual Tom Stead memorial scramble at Green Tree G.C. on April 28th starting at 9am. The later than usual start to the season was caused by a Refinery Turnaround and Major Project work. The bonus was we had beautiful weather this year, quite a change from previous years. We had 31 players sign up and play. The first flight was won by the team of Ken Dorsey, Jake Finnegan, Don McFatter and Nemon Williamson, they were tied in first place by the team of John Ortiz, Dave Pearce, Don Scribner and Denzil Storbeck both teams shooting 64. Finishing in second place one stroke back, the team of Steve Blotzer, Bob Bohnet, Rick Morgan and Eddie Pereira. Taking third place was the team of Bob Brown, Glenn Campbell, Chris Kelly and Trent Van Nieuwburg. The second flight was won by the team of Mike Cook, Sandie Cook, Phil Eubanks and Michael Katz with a 66. Two strokes back was the second place team of Brittany Hurst, Matt Hurst, Kevin Peck and Karen Webster. Taking third place was the team of Todd Lopez, and Debbie and Sonny Menzel. Eddie Pereira won both closest to the pins. Sonny Menzel and Michael Katz won the long drives. This year we raised $310.00 in contributions to the American Heart Association in “Tom’s” memory. Total to date of $6351.00.
Valero Golf Rankings, to start the year off Chris Kelly held the # 1 spot, Kevin Peck # 2, Dave Pearce # 3, Sandie Cook # 4 and Denzil Storbeck # 5.
The first regular tournament of the year was held at Foxtail – South GC on Saturday, May 19th starting at 9am. Going low is the name of the game at Foxtail – South, the last tournament held there 9 years ago was won by Don Scribner and Jim Grant with net 63’s to win the first and second flights. No difference this year, Dave Pearce shot his best gross score ever (79) in winning the first flight with a net 65. Finishing second was Larry Campbell with Mike Cook taking third. In the second flight Glenn Campbell won his first tournament with a net 63. Bob Bohnet and Steve Page tied for second place with net 65’s. Steve Blotzer and Sandie Cook tied for third with net 70’s. The CP’s were won by Debbie Menzel and Larry Campbell. Dave Pearce and Steve Page won the LD’s. Dave Pearce starts off the year with the points lead, Glenn Campbell leads the scoring average. The greens were fast and like Rooster Run last year gave the players real problems if they were pin high or above. 8 birdies were made by the field, two by Dave Pearce, other birdie shooters were Steve Blotzer, Bob Bohnet, Matt Hurst, Don Scribner, Denzil Storbeck and Nemon Williamson. In first round Pyramid play it was Glenn Campbell over Sandie Cook. Steve Blotzer, Kevin Peck, Don Scribner and Bob Simonson with one apiece. Net Eagles were made by Mike Osada, Kevin Peck and Bob Simonson. Only 6 players shot net scores par or better, the rest of the field averaged a net 79. Don Scribner’s gross score of 83 broke the low gross course record. The other CP was won by Don Scribner, the other LD was won by Rob Yarbrough. Dave Pearce maintained the points lead, Steve Blotzer took over the scoring average lead. Chris Kelly maintained his # 1 Ranking, # 2 was Dave Pearce, Kevin Peck held at the # 3 position, Sandie Cook held at # 4 with Denzil Storbeck in the # 5 spot. Positions # 2 through # 4 are only separated by 0.29.
If you like playing golf in Scotland then you would have fit right in at Franklin Canyon at 7:30 am on Saturday, June 16th. The temperature was in the fifties with a 30+ mph gusty wind blowing, very cold conditions. The bad conditions didn’t bother Michael Katz who ran away in the first flight shooting a net 66, second place was Matt Hurst and Bob Simonson 8 strokes back. Don Scribner took third with a net 77. Jerry Crumrine and Debbie Menzel tied for first place in the second flight with net 66”s. Our first major championship of the year was played at Rio Vista GC on Saturday, August 4th starting at 9am. When we got to the course we thought we were going to play Rio Vista without the wind as it was calm, that all ended on the first tee as the wind came up and blew pretty hard on the front nine, it dropped off on the back nine with the temperature at about 100 degrees as we finished play. Sonny Menzel after shooting a net 63 gathered 46 points and won the second flight and the Club Championship, his second as he also won it in 2001. The “37th” annual Winners Tournament was played for the second year in a row at Shadow Lakes G.C. on Saturday, September 22nd with a 8am start time. Last year the temperature was unseasonable cool with reading’s only in the low to mid sixties. This year rain was added, it rained hard early but stopped just as we teed off, we did have some showers half way through the back nine. Only sixteen of the twenty-three eligible players played plus three ineligible for a total of nineteen. Nemon Williamson claimed his first Winners Tournament and third major shooting an excellent gross 76 net 66. The first place prize money was sweetened by a generous contribution by Rob Yarbrough. In winning his third major Nemon qualified for the Valero Golf Club’s “Hall of Fame”. With his win Nemon Williamson won the Points Championship for the year. The 31st Pyramid Tournament finals were held at the beautiful Contra Costa C.C. on Tuesday, November 13th, a beautiful fall day with temperatures in the high seventies and no wind. The course minus a couple of aerated fairways and some difference in the greens speed was perfect. John Ortiz, Don Scribner and Neal Stachowicz made up the final threesome for the championship. On the opening hole you tee off across the main road coming into the Country Club, Neal split the fairway, John was way right, Don was left. A huge tree sits right in the middle of the fairway and must be played around or over on your second shot. Neal hit his second shot pin high just left just off the green, John after we found his ball hit his second shot short of the green, chipped up and made a very good putt for a par. Neal also made a par on the hole. Don having some trouble took a triple bogey. Neal hit his tee shot on the par 3 second hole about 6 feet from the pin. John was long, Don was short. Neal missed his birdie putt but made par. John and Don made bogeys. On the par 5 third hole Neal again hit the green in regulation, missed a birdie putt and made par. John and Don made bogeys. On the # 1 handicap par 4 fourth hole both Neal and Don hit good tee shots. John teed off and went right over the road going OB but it carried all the way to the back of the par 3 fifth hole. Neal was on the green in two but 3 putted for a bogey. Both John and Don scrambled for bogey 5’s. On the par 3 fifth hole John and Don hit the green, Neal was just off and ended up making a bogey 4, John and Don both made pars. At the end of five holes of play John was 2 up over Neal who was 3 up over Don. The tough par 5 sixth hole was the turning point for the match. Neal hit his tee shot left but in bounds, hit his second shot left hitting a tree and bouncing straight down, from there he got down for a bogey 6. John having to hit from an impossible down hill side hill lie in the aerated fairway hit his shot left into the lateral hazard. A series of misadventures left him taking a 10 on the hole. Don made a bogey 6. Neal went back to par golf making pars on the 7th, 8th and 9th holes and going out in 39 strokes. At the end of the front nine he was leading John by 8 strokes and Don by 6 strokes. On the back nine John was even with Neal for the first 5 holes then picked up 3 strokes over the next 3 holes but ran out of holes and finished second, Don finished third. Neal will have his name engraved for the second time on the “Tom Stead Trophy” as the winner of the 31st Pyramid Tournament, ( $90.00 ). Finishing second was John Ortiz ( $46.00 ). Finishing third was Don Scribner ( $28.00). Low net money went to John Ortiz ( $22.00 ), Glenn Campbell ( $18.00 ), Rob Yarbrough ( $12.00 ), Ken Dorsey ( $14.00 ) and Sandie Cook ( $10.00 ). After the Pyramid Tournament Bob Simonson maintained the # 1 spot in the golf rankings, Kevin Peck holds at # 2, Dave Pearce with his win moves up to # 3, Sandie Cook holds at # 4 and Denzil Storbeck slips to the # 5 spot.

Bob ended the year as the # 1 ranked golfer.
By finishing 1st in Tournament Points, 3rd in the Scoring Average Championship for the year, and 5th in the Pyramid Tournament, Nemon Williamson was the Valero Golf Club’s “Player of the Year” for 2007 (his third).
The 13th annual Revenge Scramble Tournament scheduled to be played at Kennedy GC in Napa on October 13th was cancelled due to a refinery turnaround.
