2005 Highlights
The 35th Valero Golf Club season started out with the playing of the traditional 20th annual Tom Stead memorial scramble at Green Tree G.C. on March 26th. It rained for six straight days prior to the tournament but we ended up playing at the end of a 3 day dry window. The course was in pretty good shape considering we had a very wet winter. The temperature was in the high 60’s, overcast with a SE wind which came up on the back nine. Taking advantage of the good playing conditions was the team of Jake Finnegan, Dave Frank, Ed Vegas and Nemon Williamson who shot a new record score of 9 under par to win the first flight. Taking second place two strokes back was the team of Joe Bateman, Brian Fien, Fred Longoria and Mitch Miller. Two teams tied for third place, one team consisted of Larry Campbell, Mike & Sandie Cook and Don Scribner the other of Steve Blotzer, Bob Bohnet, Rick Morgan and John Ortiz. The second flight was won by the team of Kevin Peck, Debbie & Sonny Menzel and Gene Stangel who shot a 5 under par 66. Four strokes back was the second place team of Bob Aton, Jim Aton, Dave Pearce and Jim Spurgeon. Taking third place was the team of Mike Katz, Steve Page, Marge & Rob Talbot. Joe Bateman and Mike Katz won the closest to the pins. Fred Longoria and Debbie Menzel won the long drives. Debbie also had the shots of the day, after winning the long drive on the 16th hole she chipped in her teams 3rd shot for an eagle. This year we raised $400.00 in contributions to the American Heart Association in “Tom’s” memory. Total to date of $5581.00.
Valero Golf Rankings were developed based on the system used by the PGA and other world tours. To start the year off Rob Yarbrough held the # 1 spot, Debbie Menzel # 2, Rick Simonson # 3, Kevin Peck # 4 and Bob Simonson # 5.
Our first regular tournament of the year took place at Paradise Valley G.C. on a beautiful spring day, Saturday, April 16th with the starting time of 9am. The 4th annual Menzel Classic best-ball tournament was held on Friday, May 6th at Mare Island G.C. We had a excellent turnout of 31 players for a three flight tournament. Starting at 1pm the weather was unsettled and got worse as we went along. Cold and windy conditions, then rain showers plagued us the entire round. Larry Campbell and Mike Cook teamed up to win the first flight with a best-ball score of 62. This was their 7th win together as a team. After a 2 year drought, Mike finally won his 50th career tournament. Last years best-ball winners Kevin Peck and Rob Yarbrough took second place with a 67. Tying for third place was the team of AJ Jones – Nemon Williamson and the team of Chuck Koziol – Bill Sharp with 69’s. Our first major championship of the year was played at Roddy Ranch G.C. on Saturday, May 21st starting at 9am. This golf year came to a close following the Valero Cup Tournament. This year we continued our weekday tournament play and players sponsoring tournaments, thanks to all the sponsors. The Valero Golf League was excellent all year at the new venue with many good matches. Out thanks go out to Debbie Menzel for doing an outstanding job again as our Tournament Director and to Sue Gustofson for running the Valero Golf League, also Neal Stachowicz who was the league statistician. As always we’re looking forward to next year, who will be the # 1 ranked player, who will win the majors, who will win the points and scoring championships and who will be the player of the year? Tune in next year for the answers. Mike Cook
