2000 Highlights
The 30th Exxon Golf Club season started with record breaking temperatures in the mid to high eighties and a very strong north wind blowing for the playing of the 15th annual Tom Stead memorial scramble tournament. The tournament was held at Green Tree G.C. on April 1st. The course and the greens were hard and fast which made it tricky playing in the strong north wind. Three teams tied for first place in the first flight, Larry Campbell, Brian Cook, Mike Cook, Sandie Cook – Ken Dorsey, Jake Finnegan, Rod Robinson, Nemon Williamson – Bob Boyer, Rick Carr, Matt Hurst, Kevin Peck. Two teams tied for first place in the second flight, Joe Bateman, Glen Overman, Don Scribner, Rob Yarbrough – Ron Cupid, Ken Powers, Marv Smith, Denzil Storbeck. No one hit the closest to the pin green on the par three 7th hole. Sandie Cook won the LD on # 6 hole. Fred Longoria won the LD on the 17th hole and the CP on the 15th hole. We raised $400.00 for the American Heart Association in “Tom’s” name. Total to date $3801.00. Thanks to all of you that played.
The best-ball tournament at Paradise Valley on April 29th was played in ideal conditions, temperature in the mid 70’s with very little wind due to an early start time of 9am. The course was in good condition but the greens were inconsistent in speed. Bob Simonson with a net 66 teamed with Ron Powers to win the first flight with a 64. Defending champions Neal Stachowicz and Marv Smith finished second with the Steve Blotzer and John Ortiz team third. Sonny Menzel had a net 62 leading the Menzel team to first place in the second flight with a 63. Finishing second with a 65 was the Larry Odom, Rob Yarbrough team, the Phil Eubanks and Dan Riley team took third. Bob Simonson, Rick Carr, John Ortiz, Rollin Podwys and Mike Narodzonek had birdies for net eagles. Marv Smith had a net 63 and Rick Carr a net 67. Matt Hurst had a CP and a LD. Mike Osada won the other CP, with Rollin Podwys winning the other LD. Bob Simonson started out the year with the points lead, Sonny Menzel with the scoring average lead.
The first “ Valero Golf Club “ tournament was the Club Championship held at Rancho Solano G.C. on May 27th. The Club Championship format was changed from match play to a modified stableford points plus handicap system. The weather was ideal with the temperature in the mid 80’s and a moderate westerly wind. Dan Riley won the second flight and the first Club Championship since the mid eighties with a total stableford points plus handicap of 48 pts. John Ortiz took second with 40 pts., Ed Vegas third with 35 pts. Mike Cook won the first flight with 45 pts. after making par on the first 16 holes and finishing with 2 bogeys. Finishing second with 41 pts. was Denzil Storbeck, and Neal Stachowicz third with 40 pts. Dan Riley shot a 39 on the front nine, had two birdies, and took over the points lead. Sonny Menzel kept his scoring lead. Marv Smith and Nemon Williamson won the CP’s, Dan Riley and Mike DeHart won the LD’s. Marv Smith, Neal Stachowicz and Larry Campbell each had two birdies. The course was in good condition but putting was still the key, the field had 9 birdies. Shot of the Day: Dave Pearce, after mishitting his drive, hit a 5 wood across the lake on the par four 11th hole to a pin just over the lake and then made the putt for a birdie.
The Mare Island Tournament scheduled for June 24th was cancelled because of a conflict with Valero’s family day at Marine World.
The Lone Tree tournament was played on July 22nd with the temperature in the mid to high eighties and a moderate westerly wind. We played in a shotgun start with another tournament and the play was very slow, 5 1/2 hours. Rick Carr tore up the course with a net 61, kept his scoring lead, won his pyramid match with Dan Riley, won both long drives, won the second flight, and moved into second place in the points. Ed Vegas had a 66 to finish second, Jim Spurgeon and Rob Yarbrough tied for third. Dan Riley won the first flight with a 66, a CP and maintained his points lead. Kevin Peck finished second with a 68 making two birdies on the back nine. Mike Cook finished third. Denzil Storbeck won the other CP. Nemon Williamson shot a 37 on the front nine with Mike Cook shooting a 38 on the same nine. Mike DeHart had back to back shots of the day: His tee shot on the par 3 second hole took one bounce and landed in the back basket of a golf cart, he followed that up by driving the 281 yd. par 4 third hole pin high but missed the eagle putt. We played the “new” par 4 first hole, what a joke, bring back the old par 5.
The Delta View Tournament was played on August 19th, the temperature in the mid 80’s but with a very strong westerly wind. The greens were very fast with difficult pin placements. Matt Hurst won the long drive on # 7 with a 290 yard drive, Neal Stachowicz won it on # 18 with a 280 yard drive. Mike Cook won the CP on # 6, the only ball on the green. Rick Carr won the other CP. Debbie Menzel won her first individual tournament, winning the second flight and moving into second place in the points. Mike Osada qualified for the Winners Tournament taking second in the second flight, Ed Vegas was third. Don Scribner won the first flight with a great net 63. Dan Riley was second with Matt Hurst third. Dan Riley kept his points lead and took over the scoring lead. Rob Yarbrough won his Pyramid match against Rollin Podwys. Only 4 birdies for the field.
The Bethel Island Tournament was played on September 16th in ideal conditions, temperature in the mid 80’s with just enough wind to keep it cool. Don Scribner kept cool and won the first flight for the third year in a row. Mike Cook shot a 37 on the back nine and tied Dan Riley for second place. Dave Pearce was third. Ed Vegas won the second flight and with Don Scribner moved into a tie for second place in the points. Sonny Menzel and Jim Spurgeon finished second and third. Nemon Williamson won both long drives and a closest to the pin. Sandie Cook won the CP on the 14th hole. Dan Riley maintained his points and scoring leads. No new players became eligible for the Winners Tournament, we ended up with 14 eligible. Jim Spurgeon just missed qualifying, finishing in third place for the second time this year.
The 30th annual Winners Tournament was played at Franklin Canyon G.C. on October 7th on a cool, low 70’s day with a blustery west wind. Only 6 players that were eligible played with 4 that were not for a total of 10. Mike Cook and Dan Riley tied for first place, Don Scribner and Ed Vegas tied for second and Dave Pearce and Bob Simonson tied for third. Although not eligible Rob Yarbrough took the first place points, Nemon Williamson took the second place points. Rob also won both LD’s. This moved both these players into the top eight points and qualified them for the Valero Cup Tournament. Dan Riley won both the Points and Scoring Average Championships for the year.
The Winners Tournament playoff was held at Paradise Valley G.C. in mid October. Mike Cook and Dan Riley tied again with net 70’s. The second playoff was played at Canyon Lakes C.C. on October 21st with Dan Riley winning with a net 71 to Mike’s 77.
The 14th Valero Cup tournament was played at Canyon Lakes C.C. on October 21st. The temperature was in the low seventies with a strong gusty wind blowing. Closest to the Pins went to Dan Riley, Nemon Williamson, Ed Vegas and Rick Morgan. Rob Yarbrough again handed out prizes to all the players that participated.

After leading the points for almost the entire year, posting a near record low scoring average, winning the Club Championship and the Winners Tournament and finishing 7th in the Pyramid Tournament, Dan Riley was the Valero Golf Club’s “Player of the Year” for 2000.
Chimney Rock golf course closed this year. We had our first tournament there in 1972 and played the old 18 hole layout until 1980. In 1983 the new 9 hole golf course opened for play. We played regular, best-ball and scramble tournaments there until 1999, it was also the site of the 1985 Winners Tournament. Boyd Cook was the king at Chimney Rock, winning tournaments there 7 times.
Another golf year comes to a close, and as before we must thank Rob Yarbrough, our Tournament Director for doing an outstanding job keeping the club going during all the turmoil caused by the refinery ownership change mid year. Great job Rob !
