1999 Highlights

Last year it was El Nino, this year it was La Nina but we successfully played the 14th annual “Tom Stead Memorial Scramble” at Green Tree  G. C. on April 10th with all groups finishing just before it started raining. The putting greens were in awful shape having been aerated and covered with a thick layer of gravel-like material but it didn’t bother the first place team of Steve Blotzer, Jim Grant, John Ortiz, Rollin Podwys and Dan Riley. The second flight was won by the Bob Boyer, Rick Carr, Matt Hurst and Kevin Peck team.We raised $440.00 for the American Heart Association in “Tom’s” name, $3401.00 total to date.

On May 8th we played our Best-Ball Tournament at Mountain Shadows – North. Marv Smith had two net eagles leading the Marv Smith, Neal Stachowicz team to win the first flight. The Campbell, Cook team was second with the Blotzer, Jones team third. The Dave Pearce, Jim Spurgeon team net eagled the 17th and 18th holes to win the second flight. The Bohnet, Riley team was second, the Sandie Cook, Scribner and the Duggins,Vegas teams third. Mike Osada also had two net eagles and teamed with Denzil Storbeck to win the third flight. The Honsinger, Narodzonek team was second, the DeHart, Powers team third. Steve Blotzer and Neal Stachowicz won the CP’s, Dan Riley and Mike Narodzonek won the LD’s. Neal Stachowicz started off the year with the points lead, Marv Smith with the scoring average lead. Mike Cook shot a gross 38 on the back nine. Long drives for this tournament had to be in the fairway, eliminating a couple of reported 320 yard drives by Rick Carr and Steve Blotzer.

The long awaited spring finally arrived at Rancho Solano G.C. on  May 22nd but only lasted nine holes with a big cool down on the back nine. Rollin Podwys wasn’t cooled down at all, shooting a gross 37 on the difficult back nine to win the first flight going away. Mike Cook was second with Sandie Cook and John Justus third. Dave Pearce won the second flight for his second win in a row. Marv Smith was second with Rick Carr and Mike Narodzonek third. Sandie Cook and Larry Campbell won the CP’s. Mike Narodzonek and John Justus won the LD’s. John Justus shot a gross 37 on the front nine. Dave Pearce took over the points lead, Marv Smith kept his scoring lead.

The combination of June 19th weather and Bethel Island G.C. added up to a very difficult starting hole with O.B. left and right, many players having a tough start into a strong wind. Don Scribner didn’t have any problems winning the first flight for the second year in a row and winning both long drives. Mike Cook and Matt Hurst tied for second place, with Denzil Storbeck in third. Mike DeHart lapped the second flight, shooting a near record  net 56, including a gross 38 on the back nine. Marv Smith was second and Brian Cook third. Denzil Storbeck won both closest to the pins. Marv Smith tied Dave Pearce for the points lead. Mike DeHart took over the scoring lead. Mike Cook shot a gross 39 on the back nine.

The weekend before it was 107 degrees at Paradise Valley but when we played it on July 17th it was in the high seventies with a strong westerly wind. We played the back nine first which meant facing number 10 hole right from the start. 8’s, 9’s & 10’s by some players made it a tough start. Denzil Storbeck, after shooting a gross 39 on the front nine, won the first flight. Marv Smith was second and Mike Cook third. Doug Honsinger won the second flight with Sonny Menzel and Kevin Peck finishing second and qualifying for the Winners Tournament. Dave Pearce was third. Kevin Peck and Bob Simonson won the CP’s. Nemon Williamson won both long drives. Marv Smith took over the points lead alone with Mike DeHart maintaining his scoring lead.

Cypress Lakes on August 14th made our fourth tournament in a row playing in a strong westerly wind. Nemon Williamson shot a gross 76 to win the first flight. Rick Simonson and Denzil Storbeck tied for second with Bob Simonson third. Rob Yarbrough, repeating his Winners Tournament win from the year before won the second flight. Steve Blotzer and Mike Osada tied for second with Sandie Cook third. Matt Hurst won the long drive on the tight 7th hole with a 290 yd drive. Nemon Williamson won the other LD. He also won a CP with Sandie Cook taking the other CP. Nemon Williamson, Steve Blotzer and Rick Simonson qualified for the Winners Tournament. Denzil Storbeck had a gross 39 on the front nine and took over the points lead. Mike DeHart kept his scoring lead.

Chimney Rock G.C. on September 11th provided the last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament. Sonny Menzel won the second flight for his first tournament win with Sandie Cook and Debbie Menzel tying for second place and qualifying. Ed Vegas was third. Denzil Storbeck won the first flight, widening his points lead, with Nemon Williamson taking second after shooting a gross 79. Rick Simonson was third. Matt Hurst and Nemon Williamson won the CP’s, Rob Yarbrough and Dan Riley took thr LD’s. Doug Honsinger took over the scoring lead.

The 29th annual Winners Tournament was held at Sonoma G.C. in late September with the temperature in the mid nineties and very little wind. Dave Pearce won his second Winners Tournament 27 years after winning his first in 1972. Steve Blotzer was runner-up with Debbie Menzel taking third place. Steve Blotzer also had a closest to the pin and a long drive. Matt Hurst won the other LD, Mike Cook the other CP. Mike Cook shot a gross 39 on the front nine. Denzil Storbeck, after shooting a poor round, hung on to win both the Tournament Points and Scoring Average Championships for the year.

The fifth Revenge at Kennedy Scramble Tournament was held in late October with the team of Ken Dorsey, Jake Finnegan, Rod Robinson and Nemon Williamson taking first place with an excellent record score of 59. Closest to the pins went to Rod Robinson, Larry Campbell, Ken Dorsey and John Justus. Rob Yarbrough again presented prizes to all the players including the traditional black towels to the last place team members.

The 23rd Pyramid Tournament again had a field of 24 players. After 21 had been eliminated, the final three played for the title at Blue Rock Springs – East on November 1st. Sandie Cook ( $90.00 ) will have her name engraved on the Tom Stead Perpetual Trophy as the winner after shooting an excellent net 64. John Ortiz ( $46.00 ) finished second for the second year in a row and the 1997 winner John Justus ( $28.00 ) took third place. Low net money went to Sandie Cook ( $22.00 ), Dave Pearce ( $18.00 ), Marv Smith ( $14.00 ), Rollin Podwys ( $12.00 ) and Larry Odom ( $10.00 ).

Due to scheduling conflicts, the 13th Exxon Cup Tournament was held at Hiddenbrooke G.C. on a beautiful day on December 11th. Mike Cook finally won his first Exxon Cup after previously finishing second six times. Dave Pearce took second with Nemon Williamson third. Other players included; Matt Hurst, Marv Smith, Sandie Cook, Rob Yarbrough and Sonny Menzel. ( Denzil Storbeck and Don Scribner didn’t play )

After finishing third in Tournament Points, third in Tournament Scoring Average and fourth in the Pyramid Tournament, Marv Smith was the 1999 “Player of the Year”.

Our thanks go to our tournament director Rob Yarbrough. Check off another great and very competitive year for the Exxon Golf Club, we had six players that were able to win Player of the Year going into the Winners Tournament.
