1998 Highlights
After a very long wet winter, El Nino, we started play in the 13th annual “Tom Stead memorial scramble” in some sunshine on March 28th. Later as predicted large thunderstorm clouds rolled in and the temperature cooled off to the low fifties, there were even some snowflakes seen falling. The team of Boyd Cook, Brian Cook, Mike Cook and Sandie Cook won the first flight with a 68. The second flight was won with a 67 by the Gary Plaskett, Don Scribner, Marv Smith and Neal Stachowicz team. We raised $440.00 for the American Heart Association in Tom’s memory, total to date $2961.00.
On April 18th we played our first regular tournament at the Sonoma G.C. The greens were inconsistent in speed and the rough was very high and almost unplayable. The conditions didn’t bother Don Scribner and Rick Carr who won the first and second flights. Denzil Storbeck and Mike Narodzonek finished second and third in the first flight. Rob Yarbrough took second place in the second flight with the trio of Boyd Cook, Sandie Cook and Ron Powers third. Mike Narodzonek and Brian Cook won the CP’s. Neal Stachowicz and Dan Riley took the LD’s. Don Scribner started the year with the points and scoring average leads. Dan Riley reached the 519 yd. 16th hole in two shots but ended up 3 putting for a par.
Our next tournament was held at Paradise Valley G. C. on May 10th. Ron Powers won the one flight tournament with a fine 65. Brian Cook, a 33 handicapper won second place helped out by shooting a 43 on the front nine including a closest to the pin on the # 3 hole. Matt Hurst powered his way to a third place finish by winning the long drive on the 13th hole with a 279 yd. drive and then driving the 287 yd. par 4 14th hole where he 2 putted for a birdie. Sandie Cook won the other CP with Ron Powers taking the other LD. Ron Powers took over the points lead, Don Scribner kept his scoring lead.
Our best-ball tournament was played at Blue Rock Springs – West on June 6th. We played in a strong westerly wind with the temperature in the low sixties. The team of Larry Campbell & Mike Cook won the first flight with a 62.The Bohnet, Riley and Simonson, Simonson teams took second with the Pearce, Duggins team third. The second flight was won by the Steve Blotzer & John Ortiz team. The Sandie Cook, Scribner and Vegas, Peck teams took second with the Hurst, Carr team third. Doug Honsinger & Mike Narodzonek teamed up to win their first tournament by winning the third flight. The Powers, DeHart team was second with the Osada, Storbeck and Aton, Richey teams third. Rob Yarbrough and Bob Bohnet won the CP’s, with Matt Hurst and Ed Vegas taking the LD’s. Ron Powers kept his points lead but Steve Blotzer took over the scoring lead. Ed Vegas drove the 257 yd. 4th hole, missed his eagle putt but got his birdie for a net eagle. Other net eagles, Mike Cook on # 1, Steve Blotzer on #12, Rob Yarbrough and Larry Odom on # 7, Boyd Cook on # 15, Mike Narodzonek on # 13, and Ron Powers on # 12. Shot of the day, Ron Powers had a net double eagle on the # 6 hole.
Our next tournament at Mountain Shadows G.C. on June 27th was played in ideal weather conditions. Taking advantage was Don Scribner who won the first flight with a 63. Finishing second and third was Nemon Williamson and Dave Pearce. Jim Grant matched Don’s 63 to win the second flight. Steve Blotzer and Richard Nitzkowski finished in second with Jim Aton in third. Don Scribner won a CP. Steve Blotzer won the long drive on the 8th hole with a 296 yd. drive and also had 3 birdies. Nemon Williamson won the other long drive and a closest to the pin. Don Scribner regained the points lead. Steve Blotzer kept his scoring lead.
On July 25th we played our next tournament at Lone Tree G.C. in very warm weather. We started out in the eighties but by the time we reached the back nine it was 100 degrees. The hottest golfers of the day were Bob Simonson with a 66 to win the first flight matched by Sandie Cook’s 66 to win the second flight. Finishing second and third in the first flight were Don Scribner and Matt Hurst. Ed Vegas took second place in the second flight with the trio of Boyd Cook, John Horton and Sonny Menzel in third. John Horton won his first long drive, Matt Hurst won the other LD. Mike Cook and Bob Simonson took the CP’s. Don Scribner increased his points lead, Richard Nitzkowski took over the scoring lead. Jim Spurgeon and John Ortiz both had two birdies. John Ortiz broke his putter and had to finish putting with his 3 wood and a long iron.
Missing the weekend before and after when the temperature was over 100 degrees we played Bethel Island G.C. on August 8th with the temperature in the eighties. Mike Cook and Don Scribner tied for first place in the first flight. Dan Riley was second with Larry Odom third. The second flight was won for the second year in a row by Brian Cook with a 68. Howard Nitzkowski qualified for the winners tournament by finishing second in the second flight. Boyd Cook and Rob Yarbrough tied for third place. Boyd and Mike Cook won the CP’s with Ed Vegas and Matt Hurst taking the LD’s. Don Scribner increased his points lead again and also took over the scoring lead.
We played Rancho Solano on August 29th with temperatures in the high nineties and low 100’s. Nemon Williamson won the first flight with a 65. Dave Pearce took second place with the trio of Mike Cook, Matt Hurst and Dan Riley in third. Mike DeHart won his first tournament shooting a 63 to win the second flight, he also won the long drive on the 6th hole. Howard Nitzkowski was second with Jim Aton and Ron Powers in third. Don Scribner and Jim Spurgeon won the CP’s. Matt Hurst won the other LD. Don Scribner kept his points lead but Bob Simonson took over the scoring lead. Shot of the day – Floyd Duggins on the par 3 twelfth hole skipped his shot across the lake, hitting a goose causing his ball to bounce out of the lake and into the fringe area.
Last chance saloon, Indian Valley G.C. was played on September 20th and was the last chance to qualify for the winners tournament. Nemon Williamson won the first flight for his second win in a row. Dan Riley was second and Mike Cook third. Brian Cook won the second flight with a 67. Jim Aton finished second to take the last qualifying spot. Sandie Cook finished third. Jim Spurgeon won closest to the pin for the second tournament in a row, Mike Cook won the other CP. Matt Hurst won his 6th long drive of the year, a new Exxon Golf Club record. John Horton won the other LD. Nemon Williamson took over the scoring lead and moved closer to Don Scribner who kept his points lead.
The 28th annual “ Winners Tournament “ was held at Cypress Lakes G.C. on October 10th, with the temperature in the high seventies and a strong Northwest wind which subsided on the back nine. Rob Yarbrough won his first Winners Tournament having previously finished second in 1993. Jim Aton and Mike Narodzonek finished second with Larry Campbell taking third. Not eligible but taking third place points were Boyd Cook and Matt Hurst. Rob Yarbrough and Boyd Cook won the CP’s, Brian Cook and Steve Blotzer won the LD’s. Matt Hurst eagled the 508 yd. 10th hole and Larry Campbell missed an eagle 3 by 4 inches on the par 5, 17th hole. Don Scribner won the Points Championship for the year. Don also came back to win the Scoring Average Championship.
The 22nd Pyramid Tournament again had a field of 24 players, after 21 had been eliminated, the final three played for the title at Paradise Valley in mid November. Mike Cook ($90.00) won his third Pyramid Tournament with John Ortiz ( $46.00) second and Nemon Williamson ($28.00) third. Low net money went to Ed Vegas ($32.00), Howard Nitzkowski ($22.00), Rob Yarbrough ($12.00) and Don Scribner ($10.00).
The 12th Exxon Cup Tournament was played on November 14th at Hiddenbrooke C.C. on a very hazy day. Nemon Williamson saw clearly enough to shoot an excellent 76, net 61 to run away with the tournament and win the Cup for the second consecutive year. Mike Cook finished second and Dan Riley took third place. Other players included Matt Hurst, Brian Cook, Sandie Cook and Rob Yarbrough. ( Don Scribner and Ron Powers didn’t play )
After finishing second in Tournament Points, third in Tournament Scoring Average and third in the Pyramid Tournament Nemon Williamson was the 1998 “Player of the Year”.
The 4th revenge at Kennedy Scramble tournament, scheduled for early November, was rained out disappointing a full field of forty players who had signed up. The overall golf season went very well, we had some first time winners and some new players signed up to play. Our thanks again go out to our Tournament Director, Rob Yarbrough for setting up our tournaments. See you next year after the Turnaround.
