1995 Highlights
What a start to the 1995 golf season, we had a record 51 players at the 10th annual Tom Stead memorial scramble held at Green Tee G.C. on March 26th in between rain storms. On a sunny but cool day with a strong north wind blowing the team of John Justus, Kevin Peck, Rob and Todd Yarbrough won the first flight. The team of Steve Blotzer, Floyd Duggins, Dan Riley and Ed Vegas won the second flight. John Justus and Steve Blotzer won the CP’s, Chet Northway and Ed Vegas the LD’s. We raised $260.00 for the American Heart Association, total to date $1681.00. Thanks to everyone who played and made this a successful tournament.
April 22nd was a beautiful spring day for our tournament at Blue Rock Springs – east G.C. Nemon Williamson, Larry Campbell and Phil Kruger won first, second and third place in the first flight. Matt Hurst won the second flight with Boyd Cook second and Rob Yarbrough third. Sonny Menzel won the callaway flight with Brian Cook and Jack Merrill second and Doug Honsinger third. Neal Stachowicz and Larry Campbell won the CP’s. Gary Beckman and Matt Hurst took the LD’s. Matt Hurst started off the year with the points lead, Nemon Williamson the scoring average lead. In first round pyramid play it was Larry Campbell over Bob Bohnet and Neal Stachowicz over Howard Nitzkowski.
Chimney Rock G.C. on May 6th, another nice spring day for the two person Best-Ball tournament. 36 players made up three flights. The team of Gary Villeneuve, Nemon Williamson won the first flight. The Larry Odom, Neal Stachowicz team was second, and the Dave Pearce, Rob Yarbrough team third. Winning the second flight was the Dan Tiburcio, Lloyd Stepp team, followed by the Rick Carr, Matt Hurst team in second and the Jim Spurgeon, Dan Riley team in third. In the third flight it was the Floyd Duggins, Ed Vegas team in first, the Steve Blotzer, Ron Powers team in second and the Sandie Cook, Don Scribner team in third. Mike Cook and Gary Beckman won the CP’s, with Ed Vegas and Jim Spurgeon winning the LD’s. Nemon Williamson took over the points lead and kept his scoring average lead. Neal Stachowicz holed out his second shot on the 408 yard par four 5th hole for an eagle 2, net one. The golf God’s noted this with dismay and had Neal take an eight on that hole the next time around. In first round pyramid play it was Dan Tiburcio over Rick Carr.
Lone Tree G.C. was played in sunny but windy conditions on May 20th. In the first flight it was Don Scribner in first place, Rob Yarbrough in second and Dave Pearce third. Dan Riley won the second flight, Jim Grant was second and Rick Carr third. Jack Merrill won the callaway flight. Dave Pearce and Jim Grant won the CP’s with Maynard Spurgeon and Gary Beckman taking the LD’s. Nemon Williamson maintained his points and scoring leads. Gary Beckman almost holed out his provisional tee shot on the 292 yard 18th hole. In first round pyramid play it was Gary Villeneuve over Jim Spurgeon, Dan Riley over Larry Odom and Rob Yarbrough over Steve Blotzer.
June 10th was a sunny and mild day for the next tournamemt at Boundary Oak G.G. Boyd Cook won the first flight, Neal Stachowicz was second with the trio of Matt Hurst, Dave Pearce and Nemon Williamson tying for third. Rick Carr, Howard Nitzkowski and Jack Merrill finished first, second and third in the second flight. Larry Odom ( who missed a hole in one by a couple of inches ) and Dan Riley won the CP’s. John Justus and Rob Yarbrough won the LD’s. Nemon Williamson kept his points lead but Floyd Duggins took over the scoring lead. In first round pyramid play it was Boyd Cook over Matt Hurst, Mike Cook over Phil Kruger and Nemon Williamson over Sonny Menzel. In second round play it was Neal Stachowicz over Dan Riley.
The offical temperature was 107 degrees for the tournament at Cypress Lakes G.C. on June 24th. Beating the heat, Nemon Williamson won the first flight followed by Boyd Cook and Neal Stachowicz in second and Don Scribner in third. Richard Nitzkowski, clearly the hottest golfer with a record 17 under par performance won the second flight. Dan Riley was second with Sheldon Custer and Sonny Menzel tying for third. Lane Landry won the callaway flight. Sandie Cook and Rick Carr won the CP’s, Dan Riley and Connie Custer won the LD’s. Nemon Williamson and Floyd Duggins kept their points and scoring leads. In first round pyramid play it was Bill Sharp over Rollin Podwys by forfeit.
The weather continued hot, 104 degrees for our next tournament at Rancho Solano G.C. on July 15th. Dave Pearce, Don Scribner and John Justus finished 1,2,3 in the first flight. Sheldon Custer won the second flight with Rick Carr second. Sandie Cook and Rob Yarbrough tied for third place. Dave Pearce and Dan Riley won the CP’s, with John Justus and Rob Yarbrough taking the LD’s. Nemon Williamson kept his points lead and took over the scoring lead. John Justus shot a 2 under par gross score on the front nine and a one over par 73 for the day. ( a record ) In second round pyramid play it was John Ortiz over Dave Pearce.
August 12th was the date and Delta View G.C. was the site of our next tournament. John Ortiz won the first flight, Larry Campbell second and Matt Hurst third. In the second flight it was Maynard Spurgeon in first, Rob Yarbrough in second and Howard Nitzkowski in third. Maynard Spurgeon won both CP’s. Matt Hurst and Rob Yarbrough took the LD’s. Nemon Williamson kept his points lead but Richard Nitzkowski took over the scoring average lead. In second round pyramid play it was Gary Villeneuve over Boyd Cook, Larry Campbell over Dan Tiburcio, Bill Sharp over Nemon Williamson and Mike Cook over Rob Yarbrough.
The last chance tournament to qualify for the Winners Tournament was September 2nd at Franklin Canyon G.C. Bill Sharp qualified by winning the first flight. Matt Hurst and Rollin Podwys tied for second with Rollin qualifying. Mike Cook finished third. Larry Odom and Steve Blotzer also qualified by finishing first and second in the second flight. Howard and Richard Nitzkowski tied for third place. Richard also won a CP along with Larry Odom. Lane Landry and Steve Blotzer ( with a 300 yarder ) won the LD’s. Nemon Williamson and Richard Nitzkowski kept their points and scoring leads. Steve Blotzer hit his second shot, a 5 wood to about eight feet from the pin on the par 5 eighteenth hole and then made the putt for an eagle 3. In third round pyramid play it was Bill Sharp over Mike Cook.
The silver anniversary Winners Tournament was played on a sunny and calm day at Paradise Valley G.C. on October 7th. Floyd Duggins shooting a near record net 56 won the tournament. Finishing a strong second was Jim Grant with a net 62. Nemon Williamson took third with a net 65. Not eligible to win the tournament, Sonny Menzel took third place points with a net 64. Dave Pearce and Matt Hurst won the CP’s. John Justus won both the LD’s. John also came within one foot of driving the 337 yard 6th hole. Matt Hurst had two birdies and a CP to sneak by Nemon Williamson and win the Points Championship by one point. Nemon Williamson won the Scoring Average Championship for the year. In third round pyramid play it was Neal Stachowicz over Larry Campbell.
The ninth Exxon Cup tournament was held at Oakhurst C.C. on November 4th. Dan Riley won the Cup with Neal Stachowicz second and Boyd Cook and Dave Pearce tied for third. Other players included Nemon Williamson, Rob Yarbrough, Rick Carr and Larry Odom. ( not eligible but played, Mike and Sandie Cook )
The nineteenth Pyramid Tournament finals were held at Tilden G.C. on November 18th. Neal Stachowicz won the tournament ( $90.00 ), over John Ortiz in second ( $46.00 ) and Bill Sharp in third ( $28.00 ). Low net money went to Sandie Cook ( $10.00 ), Nemon Williamson ( $12.00 ), Mike Cook ( $14.00 ) and Boyd Cook ( $18.00 ).
The final tournament of the year was the first Revenge at Kennedy scramble played from the gold tees. It was a great tournament, if you missed it make sure you play it in 1996. The team of Larry Campbell, Howard and Richard Nitzkowski and Neal Stachowicz shot 60 to win it.
By finishing first in Scoring Average for the year, second in Tournament Points and seventh in the Pyramid Tournament, Nemon Williamson was the 1995 “Player of the Year”.
