1994 Highlights
The year started out with our 9th annual Tom Stead memorial scramble at Green tree G.C. on April 23rd. The team of Connie and Sheldon Custer, Larry Odom and Dan Riley won the tournament with a score of 65. As in the previous year we had “Crosby Weather” but we still had a record turnout of 44 players and raised $440.00 for the American Heart Association ( thanks to Pete McAllister for getting Exxon to match our contribution ). Total to date, $1421.00.
The opening regular tournament of the year was held at Franklin Canyon G.C. on May 22nd. In the first flight it was Bob Bohnet in first, Larry Campbell and Dave Pearce tied for second and Mike Cook third. Winning the second flight was Jim Spurgeon, followed by Kevin Peck and Larry Odom in second and Dan Tiburcio in third. Sandie Cook and Dan Riley won the CP’s. John Ortiz and Kevin Peck won the LD’s. Bob Bohnet started off the year with the points lead and shared the scoring average lead with Jim Spurgeon.
The two person Best-Ball tournament was held at Rancho Solano G.C. on June 18th. The team of Rollin Podwys, Kevin Peck won the first flight. The Larry Campbell, Mike Cook team was second with the Neal Stachowicz, Ron Powers team third. There was a three way tie for first place in the second flight between the Steve Blotzer, Ed Vegas team, the Howard and Richard Nitzkowski team and the Sheldon Custer, Nemon Williamson team. The Blotzer, Vegas team won the tie breaker for Winners Tournament eligibilty. One stroke back was the team of Dave Pearce, Rob Yarbrough in second with the John Ortiz, Jim Grant team in third. Mike Cook won both the CP’s. Dave Pearce and Dan Riley took the LD’s. Kevin Peck took over the points lead, Steve Blotzer took over the scoring lead.
Kennedy G.C. was the site of the next tournament on July 16th. Kevin Peck and Neal Stachowicz tied for first place in the first flight. Rollin Podwys was second with Boyd Cook third. Dan Tiburcio, Sheldon Custer and Sandie Cook finished first, second and third in the second flight. Nemon Williamson and Neal Stachowicz won the CP’s with Jim Murphy and Ed Vegas taking the LD’s. Kevin Peck increased his points lead, Larry Campbell took over the scoring average lead.
The next tournament was held at Delta View G.C. on August 13th. In the first flight it was Larry Campbell and Mike Cook tied for first place, with Kevin Peck second and Dave Pearce third. Larry Odom with a record 15 under par 57 won the second flight by 12 strokes with Ron Powers second and Dan Riley third. Maynard Spurgeon and Larry Odom won the CP’s. Bob Bohnet and Matt Hurst took the LD’s. Kevin Peck and Larry Campbell kept their points and scoring leads.
Boundary Oak G.C. on September 24th was the last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament. Mike Cook won the first flight. Nemon Williamson qualified by finishing second with Rollin Podwys in third. Rob Yarbrough and Dan Riley both qualified by finishing first and second in the second flight. Jim Murphy was alone in third. Dan Riley and Mike Cook won the CP’s. Maynard Spurgeon and Rollin Podwys took the LD’s. Mike Cook tied Kevin Peck for the points lead with Dan Tiburcio taking the scoring average lead.
The twenty fourth Winners Tournament was held at Paradise Valley G.C. on October 8th. Dan Tiburcio won first place with Mike Cook and Dave Pearce tied for second and Ed Vegas third. Although not eligible to win the tournament, Darwin Richey took the 8 first place points with a net 62. Dave Pearce and Darwin Richey won the CP’s, Bob Bohnet and Matt Hurst won the LD’s. Mike Cook won the Points Championship, Dan Tiburcio won the Scoring Average Championship.
The eighth Exxon Cup tournament was held at Sonoma G.C. on October 22nd. Dan Tiburcio won first place with Mike Cook second and Rob Yarbrough third. Other players included Rollin Podwys, Larry Campbell, Bob Bohnet, Dave Pearce and Larry Odom. ( Kevin Peck didn’t play )
The Pyramid Tournament went very well with all the matches being played before the deadlines. Dan Tiburcio won the tournament ( $90.00 ), with Mike Cook second ( $46.00 ) and Larry Campbell third ( $28.00 ). Low net money went to Rollin Podwys ( $10.00 ), Larry Odom ( $12.00 ), Sandie Cook ( $14.00 ), Steve Blotzer ( $18.00 ) and Dan Tiburcio ( $22.00 ).
After finishing first in Tournament Points, second in Scoring Average and second in the Pyramid Tournament, Mike Cook was the 1994 “Player of the Year”.
Again our thanks go out to Rob Yarbrough for doing an outstanding job as Tournament Director. A lot of work goes into this thankless job and I was glad to see some players say thanks at the Winners Tournament and the Exxon Cup. Rob’s already got next years tournaments set up and ready to go.
