1988 Highlights
The 1988 golf season started out with the 3rd annual Tom Stead memorial scramble tournament at Green Tree G.C. on March 26th. Taking first place was the team of Phil Eubanks, Paul Fair, George McCloskey and Don Scribner. The tournament raised $140.00 for the American Heart Association.
The first regular tournament of the year took place at Lone Tree G.C. on April 16th. In the first flight it was Mike Cook in first place, Denzil Storbeck second and Drew Paterson third. Ed Vegas won the second flight. Randy Kilgore and Don Scribner tied for second place, George McCloskey and Sal Salinas tied for third. Bill Telepak and Mike Cook won the CP’s with Rollin Podwys and Boyd Cook winning the LD’s. Mike Cook started out the year with the points lead, Ed Vegas the scoring average lead. Howard Nitzkowski holed out his second shot for an eagle 2 on the par 4 third hole.
Kennedy G.C. was the site for the two person Best-Ball tournament held on May 14th. The Larry Campbell, Mike Cook team won first place in the first flight. The Dave Pearce, John Ortiz team tied with the Bob Bohnet, Rollin Podwys team for second place. The Drew Paterson, Mike Rosenberg team took third. In the second flight it was the Don Scribner, Phil Eubanks team in first, the Boyd and Sandie Cook team in second and the Bill Telepak, Chuck Koziol team in third. Richard Nitzkowski and Phil Eubanks took the CP’s. John Ortiz and Rollin Podwys won the LD’s. Mike Cook and Ed Vegas kept their points and scoring leads.
The third tournament of the year was held at Chimney Rock G.C. on June 4th. Denzil Storbeck, Boyd Cook and Mike Rosenberg finished first, second and third in the first flight. Sandie Cook won the second flight with Phil Eubanks second and Don Scribner third. Dave Pearce and Boyd Cook won the CP’s. John Ortiz won both of the LD’s. Mike Cook maintained his points lead and took over the scoring average lead.
The next stop was a one flight tournament at Boundary Oak G.C. on June 25th. Sandie Cook finished first in the tournament with Boyd Cook, Mike Cook and Don Scribner tied for second, John Ortiz took third. Sandie Cook and Don Scribner won the CP’s with Drew Paterson and Mike Cook taking the LD’s. Mike Cook kept his points and scoring leads.
Back to two flights for the next tournament at Green Tree G.C. on July 16th. Mike Rosenberg, John Ortiz and Mike Cook finished 1,2,3 in the first flight. Don Scribner won the second flight with Larry Campbell second and Sandie Cook third. John Ortiz and Larry Campbell took the CP’s with Sandie Cook and Mike Rosenberg winning the LD’s. Don Scribner took over both the points and scoring average leads. Larry Campbell had an eagle 3 on the par 5 third hole for the club’s second eagle of the year.
Tilden G.C. was played on August 13th in a one flight tournament. Low scoring was the theme of the day. Phil Eubanks won first place with an 11 under par 59, followed by Mike Cook in second with a 61 and Ed Vegas in third with a 62. Ed Vegas won the CP, no one hit the # 4 green. The LD’s went to Mike Rosenberg and Phil Eubanks. Mike Cook regained the points lead with Ed Vegas taking over the scoring average lead.
The next tournament, also with one flight was held at Sonoma National G.C. on August 27th. Larry Campbell won the tournament with Phil Eubanks and Bill Telepak tying for second. Don Dean and Don Scribner tied for third place. John Ortiz and Dave Pearce won the CP’s, Jim Telepak and Boyd Cook took the LD’s. Mike Cook and Ed Vegas kept their points and scoring leads.
Franklin Canyon was the site of another one flight tournament on September 10th. Mike Cook and Don Scribner tied for first place, Phil Eubanks was second and Ed Vegas third. Dave Pearce won a CP, Don Scribner a LD. Mike Cook took a CP and a LD. Mike Cook kept his points lead and took over the scoring average lead going into the Winners Tournament.
The eighteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at Diablo Creek G.C. on October 9th. Phil Eubanks and Don Scribner tied for first place. ( They also tied in the Pyramid Tournament finals ) Mike Cook and Denzil Storbeck tied for second with Dave Pearce and Ed Vegas tying for third. Don Scribner and Denzil Storbeck won the CP’s, Mike Cook and Mike Rosenberg took the LD’s. Don Scribner moved past Mike Cook to win the Points Championship for the year. Phil Eubanks finished third. Mike Cook won the Scoring Average Championship with Don Scribner second and Ed Vegas third.
The Winners and Pyramid Tournaments playoff was held at Diablo Creek G.C. with Phil Eubanks the winner over Don Scribner by two strokes to take both titles. First, second and low net money in the Pyramid Tournament went to Phil Eubanks ( $45.00 ), Don Scribner ( $18.00 ), Mike Cook and Boyd Cook ( $3.50 ), Don Dean ( $5.00 ), Sandie Cook ( $6.00 ), Mike Cook ( $7.00 & $8.00 )
There was no Exxon Cup tournament held in 1988.
After winning the Points Championship, finishing second in the Scoring Average Championship and second in the Pyramid Tournament, Don Scribner was the 1988 “Player of the Year”.
Our Tournament Director Drew Paterson left for another job mid summer, he came back for the Winners Tournament and was presented a plaque in appreciation for his work during the last two years. John Ortiz again filled in for the rest of the year.
