1986 Highlights

The first annual Tom Stead memorial scramble tournament was held at Green Tree G.C. on March 22nd, 1986. We had 32 players participate with the team of Mike and Sandie Cook, John Hickey and Ray Turner winning first place. The tournament raised $150.00 for the American Heart Association in “Tom’s” name.

     The next scheduled Best-Ball tournament to be held at Chimney Rock G.C. on May 17th had to be moved to June 28th due to a refinery turnaround. On May 31st a no point tournament ( because many people could not play due to the turnaround ) was held at Tilden G.C. The tournament winners are unknown.

     The regular golf season started on June 21st at Lone Tree G.C. A small turnout made it a one flight tournament. Don Dean won first place with Don Scribner in second and Bill Telepak in third. Bruce Campbell had a CP, no one hit the 11th green. Don Dean and Cullen Stephenson won the LD’s. Don Dean started out the season with the points and scoring average leads.

     One week later the Best-Ball tournament was held at Chimney Rock G.C. The team of Blayne Eversole, Cullen Stephenson won first place, the Mike Cook, Ray Turner team was second, the teams of John Ortiz, Dave Pearce and Andy Marquez, Don Scribner tied for third. In the second flight it was the team of Boyd and Sandie Cook taking first place, the teams of Bruce Campbell, Ron Powers and Don Dean, Al Trujillo tied for second with team Telepak, Bill and Jim in third. Cullen Stephenson and Jim Telepak won the CP’s. Bruce Campbell and Ray Turner won the LD’s. Don Dean kept his points lead but Cullen Stephenson took over the scoring average lead.

     On July 12th tournament play was held at Franklin Canyon G.C. Mike Cook , Cullen Stephenson and Denzil Storbeck finished first, second and third in the first flight. Bruce Campbell and Jim Telepak tied for first place in the second flight. Ray Turner and Bill Telepak took second and third place. John Ortiz and Sandie Cook won the CP’s, with Bruce Campbell and Bill Telepak taking the LD’s. Bruce Campbell by winning first place and a LD, making an eagle 3 on the par 5 eighteenth hole and a birdie picked up 11.5 points and  moved into the points lead, Cullen kept his scoring lead.         

     The next tournament was held at Boundary Oak G.C. on August 2nd. Cullen Stephenson won first place in the first flight ( with a gross 79 ). Blayne Eversole was second with Denzil Storbeck third. In the second flight Ray Turner, Howard Nitzkowski and Bill Telepak finished first, second and third. Mike Rosenberg and Don Dean won the CP’s. Blayne Eversole won both LD’s. Cullen Stephenson took over the points lead and maintained his scoring average lead.

     August 23rd was the date and Diablo Creek G.C. was the site of the next tournament played. The first flight was won by Ray Turner with Boyd Cook and Denzil Storbeck second and Cullen Stephenson third. Dave Pearce and Bill Telepak tied for first place in the second flight, Jim Telepak was second with Sandie Cook third. Dave Pearce and Boyd Cook won the CP’s. Mike Cook and Mike Rosenberg won the LD’s. Cullen kept his hold on the points and scoring for the year.

     Kennedy G.C. on September 13th was the final chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament. In the first flight Boyd Cook took first place with Denzil Storbeck second and Cullen Stephenson third. Sandie Cook won the second flight, Drew Paterson took second and the last qualifying spot, Howard Nitzkowski finished third. Drew Paterson won a CP, Don Dean a CP and a LD with the other LD going to Mike Rosenberg. Cullen continued to maintain his points and scoring average leads.

     The winner of the sixteenth annual Winners Tournament held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on October 4th was Boyd Cook. The trio of Larry Campbell, Sandie Cook and Denzil Storbeck finished one stroke back in second place. Howard Nitzkowski was alone in third. Don Scribner and Ray Turner won the CP’s. Mike Cook and Drew Paterson won the LD’s. Boyd Cook tied Cullen Stephenson for the points lead but Boyd won the Points Championship on a tie breaker. Ray Turner finished third. Denzil Storbeck moved past Cullen Stephenson to take the Scoring Average Championship for the year. Ray Turner finished third again.

     The sixth Exxon Cup tournament was held at Fountaingrove C.C. on November 2nd. Ray Turner finishing first won his second Cup in a row. Mike Cook was second again with Dave Pearce third. Other players included Boyd Cook, Don Dean, Bruce Campbell and Sandie Cook. ( Cullen Stephenson was a no show and Bill Telepak didn’t play )

     The Pyramid Tournament field was reduced to 24 players requiring a three way playoff to determine the winner. Denzil Storbeck finished on top ( $50.00 ) with Howard Nitzkowski second     ( $25.00 ) and Dave Pearce third ( $12.00 ). Low net money went to Tony Ramos ( $5.00 ), Ron Powers ( $6.00 ) and Ray Turner ( $7.00, $7.00 & $8.00 )

     In another close race for “Player of the Year”, Ray Turner after finishing third in the points, third in scoring average and fourth in the Pyramid Tournament won the title. Finishing two points back was Denzil Storbeck and three back Cullen Stephenson.

     At the Winners Tournament Cullen Stephenson was presented a plaque in appreciation for his work as Tournament Director for the last two years. We’ll miss you Cullen ! ( Go Ben Hogan, Mike & Cullen’s hero ) Drew Paterson will be taking over next year.
