1985 Highlights

We started out the 1985 golf season with a scramble tournament at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on April 20th. Three teams tied for first place; the Phil Eubanks, Bob Mathews, Richard Nitzkowski and Clar Reyes team, the Mike Cook, Tom Stead, Joe Lee and Ron Powers team and the John Kaskie, Howard Nitzkowski, Bob Simonson and Cullen Stephenson team.

      The first regular tournament of the year was held at Diablo Creek G.C. on April 27th. Cullen Stephenson won the first flight with the trio of Dave Pearce, Bob Mathews and Denzil Storbeck tied for second. Gary Beckman took third place. Bob Simonson, Scotty Coffin and Ray Turner finished first, second and third in the second flight. Al Trujillo and Cullen Stephenson won the CP’s. Cullen also won the LD. No one won the long drive on the narrow 12th hole. Cullen Stephenson started out the year with the points lead, Bob Simonson the scoring average lead.

     The two person Best-Ball tournament was held at Kennedy G.C. on May 11th. The team of Mike Cook and Denzil Storbeck took first place in the first flight. Finishing second was the Dave Pearce, Darwin Richey team, third was the Cullen Stephenson, Clint Todd team. In the second flight the Gary Beckman, Ron Powers team finished first, in second was the Don Dean, Al Trujillo team, in third the Sandie and Boyd Cook team. Mike Cook won a CP and a LD. Don Dean won the other CP with Blayne Eversole taking the other LD. Cullen Stephenson and Bob Simonson maintained their points and scoring leads.

     The third regular tournament of the year took place at Tilden G.C. on May 25th. In the first flight it was Gary Beckman first, Bob Mathews second and Mike Cook third. Mike Pajarillo won the second flight with Clar Reyes second and Don Scribner third. Gary Beckman won a CP and a LD. Cullen Stephenson won a CP, with Bob Mathews taking the other LD. Bob Simonson kept his scoring average lead but Gary Beckman took over the points lead.

     Lone Tree G.C. in Antioch was the site of the next tournament held on June 22nd. Don Dean took first in the first flight, Mike Cook second and Boyd Cook and Cullen Stephenson tied for third. In the second flight it was Al Trujillo in first place, Bill Telepak second and Ron Powers and Don Scribner tied for third. Ron Powers and Dave Pearce won the CP’s. Bob Meyer took both LD’s. Gary Beckman and Bob Simonson maintained their points and scoring leads.

     The next tournament was held at Boundary Oak G.C. on July 13th. In the first flight Boyd Cook took first place with Bob Meyer second and Cullen Stephenson third. Clar Reyes won the second flight with Al Trujillo and Ray Turner tying for second. Howard Nitzkowski took third place and also won a CP. The other CP was won by Larry Campbell. The LD’s went to Blayne Eversole and Cullen Stephenson. Cullen took over the points lead, Bob Simonson kept the scoring average lead.

     It was John Ortiz first, Mike Cook second and Dave Pearce third at the next tournament held at Kennedy G.C. on August 3rd. The second flight was won by Al Trujillo with Larry Campbell second and Mike Pajarillo third. Denzil Storbeck and Bob Meyer won the CP’s. John Ortiz and Blayne Eversole took the LD’s. Al Trujillo took over the points lead and Clar Reyes the scoring average lead.

     A tuneup for the Winners Tournament was held at Chimney Rock G.C. on August 17th. In the first flight Boyd Cook took first place with Mike Cook second and Dave Pearce and Cullen Stephenson tying for third. Ron Powers won the second flight with Sandie Cook and Bob Mathews second and Ray Turner third. Howard Nitzkowski and Mike Cook won the CP’s. Bob Mathews won both LD’s. Mike Cook took over the points lead, Clar Reyes kept his scoring average lead.

     Franklin Canyon G.C. was the site of the last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament. Bob Mathews and Cullen Stephenson won the first flight, Blayne Eversole took second and qualified, Denzil Storbeck was third. In the second flight Ray Turner and Don Scribner tied for first place with Don taking the last qualifying spot. Ron Powers finished second and John Kaskie third. No one hit the tough # 4 green for a CP but Blayne Eversole made up for it by making a hole in one on the 17th hole. Bruce Campbell and Bob Mathews won the LD’s. Cullen Stephenson took over the points lead, Clar Reyes kept his scoring lead.

     The fifteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at Chimney Rock G.C. on October 5th. Larry Campbell was the titleist with Bob Mathews and Cullen Stephenson tying for second and Ray Turner third. Stephenie Bellato, although not eligible to win the tournament won the first place points after shooting a net 62 with a 75% handicap. Bob Mathews and John Ortiz took the CP’s. Blayne Eversole won both LD’s. Cullen Stephenson won the Points Championship with Bob Mathews second and Mike Cook third. Cullen also won the Scoring Average Championship with Mike Cook second and Bob Mathews third.       

     The fifth Exxon Cup tournament was held at Green Valley C.C. on October 19th. Ray Turner won the Cup with Mike Cook second and Blayne Eversole and Cullen Stephenson tied for third. Other players included Denzil Storbeck, Boyd Cook, Don Dean and Al Trujillo. ( Bob Mathews and Ron Powers didn’t play ).

     The fourth Club Championship was held with the eight lowest handicap players at the mid point of the golf season eligible to participate in a match play tournament. In the first round it was Mike Cook over Boyd Cook 3 & 2, Dave Pearce over Denzil Storbeck 2 up, John Ortiz over Bob Mathews 6 & 5

 The Cullen Stephenson, Bob Meyer match was not played. In second round play it was Dave Pearce over Mike Cook 3 & 1. The other matches were never completed and the tournament was dropped.

     For the fifth year in a row the Pyramid Tournament had a full field of 32 players. Boyd Cook won the tournament ( $75.00 ) over Ray Turner ( $32.00 ) who finished second. Low net money went to Howard Nitzkowski ( $5.00 ), Cullen Stephenson ( $6.00 ), Mike Cook ( $7.00 ), Lloyd Stepp ( $7.00 ), Denzil Storbeck ( $8.00 ), Boyd Cook ( $9.00 ) and Ray Turner ( $11.00 )

     By winning the Points and Scoring Average Championships and finishing 9th in the Pyramid Tournament, Cullen Stephenson was the 1985 “Player of the Year”. Bob Mathews finished second by one point with Mike Cook third being five points back.
