1984 Highlights
The scramble tournament returned after a years absence, it was held at the new Chimney Rock G.C. on March 17th. The team of Mike and Sandie Cook , Marv Smith and Tom Stead tied with the team of Gary Beckman, Boyd Cook, Mike Pajarillo and Jim Spurgeon for first place. 38 players were set up in teams by handicap.
The first regular tournament of the year was held at Lone Tree G.C. on April 7th. It was a three flight tournament with Gary Beckman and Rollin Podwys tying for first place in the first flight. Taking second was Tom Palilonis with Denzil Storbeck and Terrance Woram third. In the second flight Boyd Cook and Bob Simonson tied for first, Cullen Stephenson second and Bob Mathews third. Lloyd Stepp won the third flight with Jim Grant second and Scotty Coffin third. Scotty also won a CP along with Don Dean. Tom Palilonis and Joe Luna won the LD’s. Boyd Cook, Rollin Podwys and Lloyd Stepp took the points lead to start the year off. Lloyd Stepp the scoring average lead.
The two person Best-Ball tournament was held at Green Tree G.C. on April 28th. The team of Joe Luna and Rollin Podwys won the first flight. Taking second place were the teams of Andy Marquez, Lloyd Stepp and John Hickey, Chet Northway. Finishing third was the Ron Powers, Terrance Woram team. In the second flight the team of Jim Grant, Clar Reyes tied with the team of Don Dean, Harold Juris for first place. The Grant, Reyes team won the tie breaker for Winners Tournament eligibility. The team of Sandie and Boyd Cook tied with the team of Mary and Tom Palilonis for second place. The Scotty Coffin, Clint Todd team took third place. Andy Marquez won the CP, no one hit the eight green for the other CP. Tom Palilonis and John Hickey won the LD’s. Rollin Podwys took over the points lead, Lloyd Stepp maintained his scoring average lead.
We had another three flight tournament at Diablo Creek G.C. on May 19th. Cullen Stephenson won the first flight. The trio of Tom Palilonis, Rollin Podwys and Denzil Storbeck tied for second place with Dave Pearce taking third. John Ortiz, Don Larkin and Andy Marquez finished first, second and third in the second flight. Charles Gross won the third flight with Scotty Coffin and Al Trujillo second, Jim Grant and Mike Pajarillo third. Charles Gross and John Ortiz won the CP’s, Tom Palilonis won both LD’s. Rollin Podwys and Lloyd Stepp maintained their points and scoring average leads.
June 2nd was the date of the next tournament held at Tilden G.C. For the second tournament in a row, Cullen Stephenson won the first flight. Mike Cook and Denzil storbeck tied for second place with Rollin Podwys taking third. John Ortiz also repeated his first place finish in the second flight, with Darwin Richey second and Dave Pearce third. In the third flight Mike Pajarillo and Tom Stead tied for first place, Joe Luna and Howard Nitzkowski tied for second place with Mary Palilonis taking third alone. Joe Luna and Bob Mathews won the CP’s. Tom Palilonis and Mike Cook won the LD’s. Cullen Stephenson took over the points lead, Lloyd Stepp maintained his scoring average lead. Tom Palilonis was presented a plaque in thanks for his work as Tournament Director as he and Mary left to go back east. John Ortiz filled in as Tournament Director for the rest of the year.
Another three flight tournament was held, this time at Kennedy G.C. on June 30th. Gary Beckman, Cullen Stephenson and Boyd Cook finished first, second and third in the first flight. The second flight was won by Scotty Coffin with Clar Reyes second and Larry Campbell and Tom Stead tied for third. Jim Grant won the third flight with Sal Salinas second, John Hickey and Roger Staha tied for third. Roger Staha and Don Dean won the CP’s, Mike Cook and Rollin Podwys the LD’s. Cullen Stephenson increased his points lead, Scotty Coffin took over the scoring average lead.
Boundary Oak G.C. was the site of the next tournament which was held on July 14th. In the first flight Gary Beckman and Denzil Storbeck tied for first place, Cullen Stephenson second and Mike Cook third. John Ortiz won the second flight with Boyd Cook and Andy Marquez tying for second, Sandie Cook and Darwin Richey tying for third place. Denzil Storbeck and John Ortiz won the CP’s. Rollin Podwys and Darwin Richey took the LD’s. Cullen Stephenson and Scotty Coffin maintained their leads in the points and scoring for the year.
We returned to Kennedy G.C. for the second time this year, this time the tournament was held on August 4th. In the first flight John Ortiz won first place, Mike Cook second and Boyd Cook third. Roger Staha took first place in the second flight, Mike Pajarillo second and Howard Nitzkowski third. Don Dean and Mike Cook won the CP’s, Rollin Podwys and John Otriz the LD’s. John Ortiz took over the points lead, Scotty Coffin kept his scoring average lead.
Blue Rock Springs G.C. was the site of a one flight tournament held on August 24th. Roger Staha won first place with Boyd Cook second and Denzil Storbeck third. Boyd Cook and Don Dean won the CP’s with Dave Pearce and Roger Staha taking the LD’s. John Ortiz and Scotty Coffin kept their points and scoring leads.
Chimney Rock G.C. on September 15th was the last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament. Sandie Cook by winning the second flight took the last spot. Al Trujillo and Roger Staha finished second and third. In the first flight Boyd Cook took first place with Cullen Stephenson second, Mike Cook and Clar Reyes tied for third. Charles Gross won the CP, no one hit the par 3 twelfth green for the other CP. Roger Staha and Bob Mathews won the LD’s. John Ortiz kept his points lead but Cullen Stephenson took over the scoring average lead for the year.
The fourteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at the “home of ties”, Franklin Canyon G.C. on October 6th. Scotty Coffin, Darwin Richey, Roger Staha and Denzil Storbeck tied for first place. One stroke back was Mike Cook, two back John Ortiz for second and third place. Bob Simonson and Rollin Podwys took the CP’s with Rollin also taking a LD along with John Ortiz. John Ortiz was the Points Champion followed by Cullen Stephenson and Boyd Cook in second and third. Cullen won the Scoring Average Championship with Scotty Coffin second and Denzil Storbeck third.
The 18 hole playoff for the Winners Tournament came down to two players, Scotty Coffin and Denzil Storbeck. Darwin Richey and Roger Staha declined to play. Scotty won the playoff over Denzil by three strokes to win his second Winners Tournament in three years.
The fourth Exxon Cup tournament was held at Green Valley C.C. on October 20th. Cullen Stephenson won the Cup with Mike Cook second and Boyd Cook third. Other players included Rollin Podwys, Scotty Coffin, John Ortiz, Roger Staha and Gary Beckman. ( John Ortiz didn’t play )
The third Club Championship was held with the eight lowest handicap players at the mid point of the golf season eligible to participate in a match play tournament. In first round play it was Mike Cook over Dave Pearce 2 & 1, Bob Mathews over Rollin Podwys 3 & 1, Terrance Woram over Cullen Stephenson 3 & 2 and Denzil Storbeck over Don Larkin 7 & 5. In second round play it was Mike Cook over Bob Mathews 4 & 2 and Denzil Storbeck over Terrance Woram by forfeit. In the finals it was Denzil Storbeck over Mike Cook 2 up to become our third Club Champion.
For the fourth year in a row the Pyramid Tournament had a full field of 32 players. Dave Pearce ( $75.00 ) won the tournament over Cullen Stephenson in second ( $32.00 ) Low net money went to Tom Palilonis ( $5.00 ), Darwin Richey ( $6.00 ), Bob Meyer ( $7.00 ), Charles Gross ( $7.00 ), Andy Marquez ( $8.00 ), Tom Stead ( $9.00 ), and Dave Pearce ( $11.00 ).
After winning the Scoring Average Championship, finishing second in Tournaments Points and second in the Pyramid Tournament Cullen Stephenson was the 1984 “Player of the Year”.
A big thanks to Tom Palilonis who was our Tournament Director the last three years and to John Ortiz who filled in for Tom the remainder of the year after he left. Cullen Stephenson will be taking over next year.
