1983 Highlights
The first tournament of the 1983 Exxon golf season was held at the new Chimney Rock G.C. on May 7th. Forty players signed up to play in a three flight tournament. Tom Palilonis, Denzil Storbeck and Gary Barrett finished first, second and third in the first flight. In the second flight it was Don Dean first, Dave Pearce second and Cullen Stephenson third. Andy Marquez won the third flight, Phil Eubanks and Mike Pajarillo tied for second, Dan Tiburcio was third. Don Dean took both CP’s, Gary Beckman and Tom Palilonis split the LD’s. Don Dean took the points lead to start of the year, Andy Marquez the scoring average.
On May 21st, Kennedy G.C. was the sight of the 2 person Best-Ball tournament. Dave Pearce and Don Scribner teamed up to win the first flight. The Gary Beckman, Darwin Richey team finished second with the Boyd and Mike Cook team third. The Tom and Mary Palilonis team tied the Joe Luna, Rollin Podwys team for first place in the second flight. Tom and Mary won the tie breaker for Winners Tournament eligibilty. The Andy Marquez, Lloyd Stepp team was second, the Barry Ramos, Dan Tiburcio team third. Tom Palilonis won both the CP’s. Joe Luna and Don Scribner won the LD’s. Tom Palilonis took over the points lead, Dave Pearce the scoring average lead.
The third tournament of the year took place at Green Tree G.C. on June 4th. Dave Pearce won the first flight with Rollin Podwys second and Tom Palilonis third. In the second flight Andy Marquez, Marv Smith and John Ortiz finished first, second and third. Phil Eubanks and Lloyd Stepp won the CP’s, Joe Luna and Tom Palilonis the LD’s. Tom maintained his points lead, Dave Pearce enhanced his scoring average lead.
The fourth tournament was held at Lone Tree G.C. on June 25th. Mike Cook shooting a two over par 75, including 5 birdies won the first flight. Terrance Woram was second with Cullen Stephenson third. Scotty Coffin and Lloyd Stepp tied for first in the second flight. Floyd Duggins and Harold Juris tied for second with Don Dean and John Hickey tying for third place. Andy Marquez and Cullen Stephenson won the CP’s. Don Scribner and Terrance Woram won the LD’s. Andy Marquez took over the points lead, Dave Pearce kept his scoring average lead.
Franklin Canyon G.C. was the site of the fifth tournament, played on July 16th. Bob Mathews won the first flight with Andy Marquez second and Mike Cook third. In the second flight it was Bob Simonson first, Joe Luna and Al Trujillo tying for second and Lloyd Stepp third. Rollin Podwys and Marv Smith won the CP’s, Don Scribner and Joe Luna the LD’s. Andy Marquez kept his points lead, Bob Mathews took over the scoring average lead.
The next tournament was held at Tilden G.C. on August 6th. In the first flight it was Mike Cook first, Don Larkin and Rollin Podwys tying for second and Denzil Storbeck third. Don Dean and Al Trujillo tied for first place in the second flight. Lloyd Stepp took second with Harold Juris and Joe Luna tying for third. Terrance Woram and Dave Pearce took the CP’s with Tom Palilonis and Don Scribner winning the LD’s. Mike Cook took over the scoring average lead and tied Andy Marquez for the points lead.
August 27th was the date, the golf course was Kennedy for our seventh tournament of the year. The first flight was won by Dave Pearce, with Mike Cook second and Tom Palilonis third. In the second flight it was Boyd Cook first, Don Dean and Clar Reyes tying for second and Scotty Coffin third. Don Larkin and Dave Pearce won the CP’s. Terrance Woram and Cullen Stephenson took the LD’s. Mike Cook maintained his scoring average lead and took over the points lead.
Diablo Creek G.C. on September 17th was the last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament. Cullen Stephenson took the last qualifying spot by tying Mike Cook for first place in the first flight. Bob Mathews was second with Dave Pearce third. Finishing first, second and third in the second flight it was Clar Reyes, Lloyd Stepp and Charles Gross. Dave Pearce and Clar Reyes took the CP’s, Joe Luna and Rollin Podwys the LD’s. Mike Cook increased his points and scoring average leads.
The thirteenth annual Winners Tournament was held at Boundary Oak G.C. on October 8th. Clar Reyes won his third Winners Tournament by finishing first. Rollin Podwys was second with Mike Cook and Don Dean tying for third place. Don also won the CP, Rollin Podwys took both LD’s. Mike Cook won the Points Championship with Dave Pearce second and Don Dean third. Mike also won the Scoring Championship for the Year with Clar Reyes second and Dave Pearce third.
The third Exxon Cup tournament was again held at Rancho Murieta C.C. – South on October 22nd. Clar Reyes took first place with Mike Cook second and Andy Marquez third. Other players included Dave Pearce, Don Dean, Rollin Podwys, Tom Palilonis and Lloyd Stepp.
The second Club Championship was held with the eight lowest handicap players at the mid point of the golf season eligible to participate in the match play tournament. In the first round it was Mike Cook over Terrance Woram 2 & 1, Denzil Storbeck over Cullen Stephenson 2 & 1, Tom Palilonis over Bob Meyer 4 & 3 and Boyd Cook over Rollin Podwys 3 & 1. In second round play it was Denzil Storbeck over Mike Cook 2 & 1 and Tom Palilonis over Boyd Cook 3 & 2. In the finals it was Tom Palilonis over Denzil Storbeck 8 & 7. Tom became our second Club Champion.
The Pyramid Tournament had a full field of 32 players for the third year in a row. Denzil Storbeck took first place ( $75.00 ) over Joe Luna who finished second ( $32.00 ). Low net money went to Mike Cook ( $5.00 ), Rollin Podwys ( $6.00 ), Dave Pearce ( $7.00 ), Harold Juris ( $7.00 ), Andy Marquez ( $8.00 ), Terrance Woram ( $9.00 ) and Joe Luna ( $11.00 ).
Mike Cook and Dave Pearce tied for “Player of the Year” with Mike Cook winning the first tie breaker ( highest finishing position in tournament points ) to take the title. Andy Marquez finished third. Mike Cook & Tom Palilonis
