1982 Highlights
The 1982 Exxon Golf Club season started out with 35 players and our first ever scramble tournament held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on a cool, wet March 13th. Teams were set up using handicaps to even them out as much as possible. The team of Howard Nitzkowski, Todd Royer, Denzil Storbeck and Dan Tiburcio won first place. Second place went to the team of Mike Cook, John Ortiz, Tom Stead and Al Trujillo, third went to the team of Gary Beckman, Larry Campbell, Jim Grant and Bill Telepak.
The much anticipated 2 person best-ball tournament to be held at Kennedy G.C. on April 3rd was cancelled as the golf course was completely flooded due to rain storms. 36 players were ready to play.
To make up for the rainout at Kennedy G.C., another regular tournament was set up for Lone Tree G.C. on April 25th. Denzil Storbeck won first place in the first flight with Don Scribner second and Clar Reyes third. In the second flight Don Dean was the winner with George McCloskey second and Andy Marquez third. Barbara Juris and Mike Cook won the CP’s, Bill Telepak and Don Scribner the LD’s. Don Dean and Denzil Storbeck took the points lead with Denzil also taking the scoring average lead to start the year off.
The May 15th tournament scheduled for Green Tree G.C. was cancelled because of a scheduling error by the course. To make up the tournament date, another tournament was set for Bethel Island on that day. Denzil Storbeck made it a “double on the delta” by winning the first flight again. In second place was Boyd Cook with Mike Cook and Dave Pearce in third. Clar Reyes and Cullen Stephenson tied for first in the second flight. Don Dean and Scotty Coffin finished second and third. Roger Staha and Tom Palilonis won the CP’s, Don Dean and Dave Pearce the LD’s. Denzil Storbeck maintained his points lead but Clar Reyes took over the scoring average.
Sunday, June 6th was the date of the next tournament held at Boundary Oak G.C. Mike Cook stopped Denzil Storbeck’s win streak at two by winning the first flight. Denzil was second with Dave Pearce taking third. George McCloskey and Mike Pajarillo tied for first place in the second flight. Tom Stead and Roger Staha took second and third place. George McCloskey won a LD. Mike Cook won the other LD and both CP’s. Denzil and Clar maintained their points and scoring leads.
The next stop on the tournament schedule was the San Ramon National G.C. on June 26th. In the first flight, Clar Reyes, Don Scribner and Don Larkin took first, second and third places. Don Dean won the second flight, Tom Stead second and Cullen Stephenson third. Dave Pearce and Boyd Cook took the CP’s, Tom Palilonis and Cullen Stephenson the LD’s. Don Dean took over the points lead with Clar Reyes keeping the scoring average lead.
The sixth tournament of the year was held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on July 17th. Cullen Stephenson won the first flight with Don Dean and Denzil Storbeck tying for second. Boyd Cook took third place. John Ortiz won the second flight with Scotty Coffin and Marv Smith tying for second, Andy Marquez and Tom Stead tying for third. Mary and Tom Palilonis won the CP’s. Tom Stead and Bob Meyer the LD’s. Don Dean kept his points lead but Denzil Storbeck took over the scoring average from Clar Reyes.
Franklin Canyon G.C. was the site of the seventh tournament on August 7th. Mike Cook won the first flight with Terrance Woram second and Rollin Podwys third. In the second flight Scotty Coffin took first place with Don Larkin and Ron Powers tied for second. Marv Smith took third place. Scotty Coffin and Don Larkin won the CP’s with Rollin Podwys winning both LD’s. Don Dean maintained a narrow lead in the points and the same for Denzil Storbeck in the scoring average. Rollin Podwys and Don Scribner both made eagle 3’s on the par 5 eighteenth hole.
The eighth tournament of the year was held at Kennedy G.C. on August 29th. The trio of Mike Cook, John Ortiz and Tom Palilonis tied for first place in the first flight. Don Dean and Denzil Storbeck tied for second with Boyd Cook third. Larry Campbell won the second flight outright with Andy Marquez second and Harold Juris third. Bob Simonson and Darwin Richey won the CP’s with Tom Palilonis and Terrance Woram taking the LD’s. Mike Cook took over the points lead and Don Larkin took over the scoring average.
October 2nd was the date for the tournament at Tilden G.C., the last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament. No new players qualified as Denzil Storbeck won the first flight, Mike Cook second, Larry Campbell and Tom Palilonis third. In the second flight Mike Pajarillo took first place with Andy Marquez and Ron Powers tying for second, Dave Pearce in third. Dave also won a CP and a LD. Mike Cook won the other CP with Al Trujillo taking the other LD. Mike Cook maintained his points lead, Denzil Storbeck recaptured the scoring average lead.
Diablo Creek G.C. was the site for the twelfth annual Winners Tournament held on October 17th. Scotty Coffin won the tournament with Tom Stead finishing second. Tom Palilonis and Cullen Stephenson tied for third place. Tom Stead and Mike Cook won the CP’s with Tom Palilonis taking both LD’s. Cullen Stephenson had an eagle 3 on the par 5 twelfth hole. Mike Cook won the Points Championship with Denzil Storbeck second and Don Dean third. In the Scoring Championship for the year it was Denzil Storbeck first, Mike Cook second and Don Dean third.
The second Exxon Cup tournament was held at Rancho Murieta C.C. -South on October 23rd. Tom Palilonis and Scotty Coffin tied for first place. Mike Cook finished one stroke back. Other players included Mike Pajarillo, Don Dean, Denzil Storbeck, Don Scribner and Clar Reyes. ( Tom Stead didn’t play ) The playoff for the Exxon Cup was played at Kennedy G.C. with Tom Palilonis the winner over Scotty Coffin.
The first Club Championship was held with the eight lowest handicap players at the mid point of the golf season eligible to participate in a match play tournament. In the first round it was Mike Cook over Clar Reyes 3&2, Denzil Storbeck over Boyd Cook 1 up, Tom Palilonis over Don Scribner 5&3 and Rollin Podwys over Dave Pearce 4&3. In second round play it was Mike Cook over Denzil Storbeck 2 up and Rollin Podwys over Tom Palilonis 3&1. In the finals it was Rollin Podwys 1 up over Mike Cook to become the 1st Club Champion.
The Pyramid Tournament again had a full field of 32 players. Don Dean took first place ( $60.00) with Don Scribner second ( $28.00 ). Low net money went to Andy Marquez and George McCloskey ( $2.00 ), Marv Smith ( $3.00 ), Mike Cook ( $5.00 ), Don Dean ( $5.00 ), Denzil Storbeck ( $6.00 & $10.00 ) and Clar Reyes ( $7.00 )
After winning the Scoring Average Championship, finishing third in the Pyramid Tournament and placing first or second in six of the seven tournaments he played in, Denzil Storbeck was named the 1982 “Player of the year”. Our congratulations go out to Denzil for a fine year.
