1981 Highlights
It was another good year – it got off to a good start at Blue Rock Springs G.C. in March with 32 players and our first three flight tournament in many years. Boyd Cook, Mike Cook and Clar Reyes finished first, second and third in the first flight. The second flight winner was Tom Stead followed by John Ortiz and Jim Grant in second and third place. Jim Spurgeon won the third flight with Marv Smith second and Don Dean third. Mike Cook won a CP and a LD. Scotty Coffin had a CP with Tom Palilonis taking the other LD. Boyd Cook, Tom Stead and Jim Spurgeon tied for the points lead to start the year off. Jim Spurgeon took the scoring average lead.
There was a 21/2 month gap between our 1st and 2nd tournaments due to the refinery wide turnaround. Our second tournament was our Best-Ball tournament at Green Tree G.C. on May 30th. We had 26 players participate, it was another successful turnout and a lot of fun. We plan to have another next year and possibly another similiar type event. Finishing first in the first flight was the team of Bob Meyer and Tom Palilonis ( Tom with a gross 78 ), in second was the team of Roger Staha and Cullen Stephenson, in third the team of Mike Cook and Clar Reyes. Winning the second flight was the Dave Pearce, Fred Trott team. The Don Dean, Mike Pajarillo and Jim Spurgeon, Marv Smith teams tied for second place. There was a three way tie for third place between the teams of John Ortiz & Tom Stead, George McCloskey & Andy Marquez and Scotty Coffin & Jim Grant. Mike Cook and Bob Meyer won the CP’s. Cullen Stephenson and Tom Palilonis won the LD’s. Jim Spurgeon took over the points lead and maintained his scoring average lead for the year.
The third tournament of the year was held at Sonoma National G.C. on June 20th. Don Scribner won the first flight followed closely by Boyd Cook in second and John Ortiz in third. Andy Marquez ran away with the second flight with Jim Aton in second and Don Dean and Darwin Richey tied for third place. Howard Nitzkowski won both LD’s and a CP. The other CP was won by Mike Cook. Boyd Cook took over the points lead from Jim Spurgeon but Jim maintained his scoring average lead.
Sunday, July 12th was the date of our fourth tournament of the year which was held at Boundary Oak G.C. Dave Pearce won the first flight, Mike Cook second and John Ortiz third. We got off to an early start, 7:28 am, for the August 1st tournament at Franklin Canyon G.C. Clar Reyes won the first flight with Don Scribner and Denzil Storbeck tied for second. The fifth Pyramid Tournament with our first full 32 player field was won by Jim Aton ( $60.00 ) over Andy Marquez ( $28.00 ) at Kennedy G.C. Low net money went to Denzil Storbeck ( $3.00 ), George McCloskey ( $4.00 ), Marv Smith ( $5.00 ), Tom Palilonis ( $5.00 ), Howard Nitzkowski ( $6.00 & $10.00 ) and Jim Aton ( $7.00 ).
The first Exxon Cup tournament for the top eight points places was held at Diablo Creek G.C. on October 24th, 1981. Tom Stead won the inaugural event by one stroke over Boyd Cook. Dave Pearce finished in third place. Other players in this first time event were John Ortiz, Marv Smith, Clar Reyes, Andy Marquez and Mike Cook. ( Don Dean didn’t play ) Tom Stead also won both closest to the pins that day.
As you may have guessed by now, Don Dean was the 1981 “Player of the Year”. This was determined by Don’s finishing position in the Pyramid Tournament, the tournament points standings and the scoring average for the year. Our congratulations go to Don on having a super year !
Our thanks again this year go to Linda Matthews for giving her time to do our typing and collect the golf money, “Thanks Linda”
Special thanks from all of us go to John Ortiz who is retiring from his duties as Tournament Director. In the past years John’s put a lot of time and effort into setting up and running the tournaments, controlling the budget and many other functions. Tom Palilonis will be taking over for John next year.
