1979 Highlights

The 1979 golf season started at Chimney Rock G.C. on May 12th. Closest to the pins and long drives were reduced back to one for each tournament. Boyd Cook won the first flight with Mike Cook and Dave Pearce taking second and third place. Mike Pajarillo won first place in the second flight, Ron Kempka second and Fred Trott third. Jim Aton won the CP, Tom Stead won the LD. Boyd Cook and Mike Pajarillo tied for the points lead after the first tournament.

     June 2nd was the date of our second tournament held at Green Tree G.C. Clar Reyes and Rollin Podwys tied for first place, Denzil Storbeck second and John Ortiz third. In the second flight Fred Trott took first place, Ron Kempka and Don Dean second and third. Closest to the pin went to Denzil Storbeck and the long drive to Dave Pearce. Fred Trott took over the points lead.

     Our third tournament of the year was played at Diablo Creek G.C. on July 7th. Clar Reyes, John Ortiz and Dave Pearce won first, second and third place. Dave also won the closest to the pin. In the second flight, Tom Stead won first place, Jim Spurgeon second and Ron Kempka third. Mike Cook won the long drive. Clar Reyes took over the points lead for the year.

     August 4th was our fourth tournament of the year at Kennedy G.C. In first place was Rollin Podwys followed by Tom Palilonis in second and Don Scribner and Denzil Storbeck in third. Marv Smith won the second flight. Tom Stead and Dan Tiburcio tied for second with Jim Spurgeon third. Tom Palilonis won both the closest to the pin and the long drive. Rollin Podwys tied Clar Reyes for the points lead.

     At Franklin Canyon G.C. ( the home of ties ) on September 1st there was a three way tie for first place between Mike Cook, Denzil Storbeck and Scotty Coffin. Don Scribner took second with Rollin Podwys third. Dan Tiburcio won the second flight. Tom Stead, Clar Reyes and Jim Spurgeon tied for second place with John Ortiz third. Dan Tiburcio and Rollin Podwys won the closest to the pin and long drive. Clar Reyes regained the points lead.

     Blue Rock Springs G.C. was the site of the ninth annual Winners Tournament held on September 30th. Clar Reyes and Jim Spurgeon tied for first place. Scotty Coffin was second with Mike Cook and Dan Tiburcio third. Clar Reyes won the CP, Jim Spurgeon won the LD. Not eligible to win but taking second place points was Robert Weatherford, the same for Dave Pearce who took the third place points .

     The first Winners Tournament playoff was held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on October 6th, 1979. Clar Reyes won over Jim Spurgeon to take the title.

     The Points Champion for 1979 was Clar Reyes with 29 points. Rollin Podwys and Jim Spurgeon tied for second with 19 points, Tom Stead was third with 17 points.

     The Pyramid Tournament returned after a years absence, a single elimination 16 player field. Clar Reyes ( $32.00 ) won the third Pyramid Tournament over Mike Cook ( $14.00 ). Low net money went to Ron Kempka ( $2.00 ), Dave Pearce ( $3.00 ), John Ortiz ( $4.00 ), Denzil Storbeck ( $4.00 ) and Clar Reyes ( $5.00 )
