1978 Highlights
The 1978 Exxon Golf season started with each tournament having two closest to the pins and long drives. On May 6th Kennedy G.C. was the site of the first tournament of the year. In the first flight Denzil Storbeck took first with Scotty Coffin second and Mike Cook and John Ortiz third. Alex Sutton won the second flight, Mike Pajarillo second and Dan Tiburcio third. Closest to the pin winners were Mike Pajarillo and Dave Pearce. Long drive winners were Mike Cook and Dan Tiburcio.
The second tournament played on June 3rd was at Sonoma National G.C. Mike Cook and Dave Pearce tied for first place in the first flight. Denzil Storbeck was second with Darwin Richey and Don Scribner third. Ron Kempka won the second flight, Clar Reyes second and Boyd Cook third. Don Scribner and Dave Pearce won the long drives. Mike Cook won the closest to the pin on the back nine, no one hit the green on the front nine CP.
Green Tree G.C., the third tournament of the year was played on July 1st. Denzil Storbeck, Mike Pajarillo and John Ortiz finished first, second and third in the first flight. Clar Reyes won the second flight with Ron Kempka and J. Wilkerson second and Larry Odom third. Clar Reyes also won a closest to the pin and a long drive. Joe Luna won the other long drive, Denzil Storbeck the closest to the pin.
On August 5th, Franklin Canyon G.C. was played as our fourth tournament of the year and last chance to qualify for the Winners Tournament. Dan Tiburcio and Don Scribner qualified by finishing first and second in the first flight. Denzil Storbeck took third place. In the second flight, Mark Harris qualified by winning, Clar Reyes second and Jim Grant and Ron Kempka third. Ron also won a closest to the pin and a long drive. Dave Pearce won the other CP, Joe Luna the other LD.
Our 8th annual Winners Tournament was held at Blue Rock Springs G.C. on split dates, one group playing during the week before and the second group playing September 2nd. Leading after the first group played was Don Scribner with a 65. Clar Reyes won the tournament with a 61, Dan Tiburcio second with a 64 and Don Scribner third with his 65. Gary Barrett shot a gross 3 over par 75. Dan Tiburcio won a closest to the pin and a long drive. Mike Cook won the other CP with John Ortiz winning the other LD. The split group idea for the Winners Tournament was dropped after this tournament, both groups playing under different conditions etc.
There was no Pyramid Tournament played this year.
Dave Pearce retired as co Tournament Director at the end of the year. John Ortiz will continue on as Tournament Director. Thanks Dave for helping run the club the last four years.
